View Full Version : High Bandwidth Hosting
pocketmatrix 03-21-2001, 12:06 AM Hello,
I'm the webmaster (and co-founder) of PocketMatrix.com.
We have been burned by http://www.cwihosting.com and are now being hosted at a very expensive ($250CDN for 50GB/m) host.
We are looking in to a host that offers around 150 of transfer/month. It would need to be unix.
We would need PHP/MySQL or the ability to install apps. We would also like to host a small quake server for a product that we are affiliated with (Pocket Quake - http://www.pocketmatrix.com/pocketquake/).
Are there any hosts that would be good for this sort of thing?
I'm looking for a really good price. Overage bandwidth should be cheap.
energy 03-21-2001, 01:24 AM Hello,
You can find prices lower then $160 USD for 50 GB.
I doubt any host will let you run a Quake server on a virtual account, you'll need to get a dedicated server for that.
You are looking at a dedicated server and you should be able to find one with 150 GB transfer for less then $480 a month.
Martie 03-21-2001, 01:28 AM You might just want to check in the dedicated server forum,
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=2
and also the advertising/offers forum here.
There are LOTS of specials in the advert. forum so you may find something or get some advice.
Good Luck
pocketmatrix 03-21-2001, 01:30 AM Well.. Just struck a deal with a guy that runs a online gaming site.
He is setting me up with up to 600GB/month for only $220/month.. i'll probably only use around 200 of it..
Have I done my math right?
2000 kb/s is 600GB/month right?
Thanks,
Chris

I'll be the first to say, IMPOSSIBLE.
I do not think anyone can afford to sell at $0.4 per GB actual transfer.
The only explanation is that they/he use(s) a special billing method where you pay for a few times more then you actually use.
pocketmatrix 03-21-2001, 01:37 AM This is what i have:
Up to 266k/s of bandwidth usage.... My site average is only 50k/s right now, but i'll be expanding...
So.. Lots of bandwidth for me :).
energy 03-21-2001, 01:46 AM I suggest you look around for a company that can give you 600 GB for $440 (double your price).
You probably will not find anyone.
Then what are the chances he can do it?
Does that guy have an email?
There isn't a single person on this board who wouldn't want to pay only 40 cents per GB actual transfer.
dektong 03-21-2001, 01:47 AM Can you give us the link where you can get 600GB of transfer for only $220/mo? Btw, yes... 2000kb/s is abut 600GB (2mbps is about 650GB)
cheers,
energy 03-21-2001, 01:49 AM A link or some way to contact the person selling 600 GB for $220 would be nice.

pocketmatrix 03-21-2001, 01:59 AM He probably wouldn't want me to give everyone his email address.... but I'll ask him what he would charge normal people for hosting.. I'm guessing .90-1.00/GB.
I'm on spring break now.. so i have a lot of spare time. I'll talk to him tomorrow and see if he wants to let other people in on this hosting thing.. He is starting a hosting company....
Here are some hints if your a diehard and go looking for his site.
He's the leader of a CS clan.
His clan has an awesome webpage.
He has about 5 CS servers, 1 of them is up right now, others are upgrading to 1.1.
His page has a hosting section which states "coming soon". He also hosts Quake 2, Quake 3 servers..
I doubt anyone will get anything from that... but whatever..
i'll be back.

It's bloody good fun too!
I'd be happy with 300gb at $220/month...you should see UK prices! Terrible!
