View Full Version : Deasoft strikes again.

I run a Shoutcast hosting business. After several requests for Australian hosting, I searched WHT for an Aussie host. Found hosting by Deasoft... Saw a couple of negative reviews, but figured it was all sorted. We learn from our mistakes.
Boy, was I wrong.
I made a couple of contacts asking if shell access was available. Yes it was, he replied. So after some kicking back and forth about hosting, availability, etc, I decided to order. After waiting two days for my cPanel login garbage (which I didn't care about), I had to contact to request shell access. It finally got set up, using some goofy randomly generated password. I changed the password after logging in, and apparently this wasn't too popular at Deasoft, so that ability was removed after asking for an additional IP. All of this took about 2 weeks, from start of contact to getting my additional IP, even remotely close to something usable. Granted I don't hunker over my email religiously, checking every 3 minutes, or every day, for that matter. So perhaps if I'd injected a sense of urgency into the ordering/setting up process, it would have been a bit quicker.
Then I finally get my configs for Shoutcast set up, attempt to execute, then I get the fab (but very common) error:
# -jailshell: ./sc_serv: /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: bad ELF interpreter: No such file or directory
Fairly simple fix, installing the library. I emailed asking for the fix on Sept. 22nd. On the 26th I get the reply "This appears to be a complex issue, can you contact the vendor of the software for the solution?"
-.-
Because, you know, it's difficult to use Google, or have the FreeBSD knowledge.
I reply on the same day: cd /usr/ports/misc/compat5x && make install
And wait. And wait. Still have a useless shell. So I reply AGAIN on Oct. 10th essentially to piss off, since he doesn't seem to want to help his customers. Oh that elicited a quick reply "Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but that command didn't work"
Gee, thanks, another 2 weeks later.
To which I reply again to piss off, that it's just been a huge waste of time and money working with this supposed experienced host... Who insisted previously that I should use US hosting, fully ignoring the fact that I was asking specifically for Aussie hosting. Who doesn't reply to tickets (the only email addy I could maybe somewhat reliably get a response from was sales@). Who has zero sense of urgency for his clients. Who obviously has little knowledge of his OS.

I guess if you JUST need web hosting, need no assistance, and really aren't in a hurry for anything, it's okay. I don't know, I didn't get that far.

Feel free to search for other great customer service hits.

Well actually you need a vps/dedicated server or shoutcast hosting for a shout cast server. All hosts that offer ssh is jailed shell.
Web Hosting is for web sites not shoutcast. I would google some shoutcast hosting companies where you have a shoutcast control panel like cast control.

Thank you,

No, I host Shoutcast, was just looking for a small shell to host 5 streams on in Australia. He claims having shell access.

He claims having shell access.

Generally shell access isn't meant to run a ShoutCast server. SSH access on webhosting accts is offered a convenience to debug scripts, run maintance scripts, etc. Unless they specifically said you could run shoutcast.

Regardless it seems their support should have identified that if this is the case.

I agree.
Most hosting providers would reply right at the beginning that they do not support shoutcast.
SSH access available does not mean shoutcast is supported/can be installed.
Getting a dedicated ip in Asia Pacific reason is not as easy as in the US.

Email response to that specific question:
"Hello,
hosting shoutcast on our Australian servers should be
fine also. As long as you stay within your plans bandwidth allocation
then all should be fine."

It honestly sounds like your host does not know what they are talking about as they will not let you install a SC server with jailshell.
I know phirefast.com does shoutcast specific hosting, you may want to check them out.

Hosting shoutcast will require specific port to be open eg. 8000 ..

I don't think you can do much with a jailed shell to setup shoutcast.

Indeed, this has nothing to do with missing libs and everything to do with a Jailshell. Had the provider gave him a standard shell (sh, ksh, bash, etc), he would have been able to launch a Shoutcast stream on a high port assuming there is no firewall interference.

Although I have to agree with the other posters, if you want to run a Shoutcast server, go to a provider who specializes in offering it. The average shared or reseller provider is no place to be running daemons, let alone a Shoutcast server.

They host in Texas. I don't need Texas hosting. I need Australian hosting. I have 3 dedicated servers in the US and Holland that are strictly Shoutcast... Was just looking for a small hosting in AU to provide better service to my customers.

Basically what I'm trying to point out here is the lack of customer service and competency. I guess I should have been alerted by "...should be fine..." *makes mental note*

Oh yeah, and their web customer interface garbage (ticketing and such) only works in IE.

Pat: Noted. The only hosting I've ever dealt with (and I've had it consistantly over the past 8 or so years) is strictly shell/ftp, full Windows, and even my web host is running on an open'ish boxen with normal shell access. Thus, my assumption is when the claim is "shell access" that I will have a normal shell on which I can execute sc_serv.

Just to clear up any confusion in this thread, you sure can install and run Shoutcast on a jailshelled account without problems.

The only thing may be if your host monitors your CPU usage - Shoutcast jumps up on its CPU usage as listeners increase, obviously.

But yes, as PatH notes, you shared hosting is no place to be running Shoutcast. You should find a VPS (www.powervps.com) or Managed Dedicated Server provider (www.theplanet.com) and run it from there.

Yes, he can, but the library for sc_serv must be installed first before running shoutcast radio. Usually, it comes with Redhat installation, but most likely he or his security admin has removed it. If he has a policy of allowing shoutcast, you should have contacted them mentioning the policy to correct/fix it.
