View Full Version : Help with The Planet Alpha WHM setup
ycmike 10-09-2008, 12:17 AM I have been with godaddy, lanehost etc, and recently decided to try The Planet Alpha, i paid $69USD plus $25 for cpanel.
It's a disater!
The Planet installed cpanel, I can log into WHM.
But The Planet really gives litte info on how to config this.
I only got two emails from the planet.
1. welcome to Orbit, which seems their ticket system
2. welcome to the planet, which gives me my
Server Name: xxxx
Server IP: xxxx
Netmask: xxxx
Gateway: xxxx
Secondary IPs: xxxx
At the WHM wizard, i need to change hostname, and i changed to "servers.myname.com"; and primary/secondary DNS to "ns1.myname.com", and "ns2.myname.com".
Meantime, i have registered the nameservers in Godaddy, and pointing to the Ips i have from "Welcome to the Planet" email.
WHM now gives error on "Add A Record".
What to do?
The Planet chat does not give any help.
Hope my experience help others too
ambient_88 10-09-2008, 12:43 AM I take it you're aware that ThePlanet is self-managed, meaning you'll have to do everything yourself. If you don't know how to configure your server, I suggest you hire a server management company for now.
ycmike 10-09-2008, 12:46 AM Yes, i just come aware of that.
But since cpanel is already installed, the only barrier seems only configing the DNS, any idea to do so?
Cody Salter 10-09-2008, 12:47 AM Under DNS functions click "Add an A Entry for your Hostname" or "Edit DNS Zone" and edit it manually.
I don't know if thats the answer your looking for, if your having a specific error on that page of WHM, if you provide us with more information we can help.

PSM charges a low fee and does a great service :)
Setting up DNS servers are not the only wall you're going to hit. You need to secure, and optimize the server for your needs.
Maybe ThePlanet could help you with this?

That's a big negatory good buddy. PSM is NOT a service for noobs such as the OP. Best thing for the OP to do is get in touch with TP regarding their Managed services. If that doesn't help the OP, I recommend getting in touch with another provider that offers full proactive management. It will cost him probably a lot more but then he'll be able to sleep at night.

Care to post your sources / proof? PSM has always been good, and I will continue to recommend them.
Ill be awaiting your reply. :)

PSM's monitoring is what every five minutes? You get a server that is "sputtering" and that ain't good enough. I had service with PSM which lasted all of three days before I fired them. I need to know when my sites/server is having an issue. PSM's monitoring just isn't good enough if you value your clients peace of mind. As for "proof" that I was a former PSM client I'm not sure how to go about that. Send me a PM with a suggestion and I will provide that.
I do have to say however, that after they screwed the pooch with me, they were very apologetic and refunded me in a very timely manner. But, as I said, I seriously doubt they can offer the peace of mind that a noob to dedicated servers needs. If you are a noob, get thee to a reputable fully managed provider.

jshtoch 10-11-2008, 09:11 AM I don't agree with Klaatu. When I first started with PSM as a noob they were such a great help to me and I've been with them ever since. I suggest anyone try them out from my experience you won't be disappointed.
handsonwebhosting 10-11-2008, 10:32 AM I've had PSM in the past managing more than 40 servers and never had anything negative to say about them. Response times were fine, resolution to issues were good etc etc. As stated previously however you do have to know what you're doing BEFORE contacting PSM however. They're great for initial setups, and anything you want, just tell them and they'll do it, but for someone who has never managed a server before, knowing to tell PSM to install suPHP and move the MySQL folder from the /var/lib or things of that nature really requires a knowledge of what it is that you're wanting done. They were more than happy to help on any occasions that we contacted them (we used them as a backup admin solution for our own internal staff). Very handy when we were doing kernel upgrades on multiple servers in a weekend.
To the OP however, check out the managed service of The Planet if you're still having problems. I've never used it, but I can definitely vouch for PSM that they can assist too. There's much more to do than just getting the A Record on the DNS to work. Don't forget your firewalls, optimizing, php.ini, mysql.cnf the list goes on and on. http://configserver.com - might be another place to checkout for service - also used them in the past, nothing but good to say about them!
YourReference 10-11-2008, 05:10 PM #1 - Get your server hardened by PSM or another company.
