View Full Version : Is my domain registered or what?
Hizashi 03-20-2001, 09:07 PM I bought and registered my domain (wishcafe.nu) at Hostrocket, but when I go to my domain, it says that the name "wishcafe.nu" is still up for registration and people can go register it at nunames.com. I've emailed both Hostrocket and Nunames about this, but I haven't received any replies. What do you think I should do? I thought Hostrocket would have my domain ready to go in minutes, but nothing I upload is showing up.
alpha 03-20-2001, 09:12 PM hehe domain registrations take at least 24-72 hours before you can access the domain.
you might have access to your web space and control panel through the use of the IP address of your account, but domain name registration takes longer time because the WHOIS database all around the world needs to be updated in order to make your domain accessible without the use of the ip address
Hizashi 03-20-2001, 09:16 PM *sighs in relief* Thanks! I was starting to get alittle panicky there, hehe. It's my first domain, so I didn't know what was going on.
Oh yea, hi everyone! :)
alpha 03-20-2001, 09:20 PM yea, this was also my question when i registered alpha-digital.com :)
good luck with your first domain
patrickw 03-20-2001, 09:26 PM Most ISPs update their DNS servers either every 12 hours, or once per day. Some of them, for reasons unknown, update every 48 hours.
That's the reason why your domain does not appear to show up for you.
There are several ping/traceroute gateways on the web that you use to try to ping your new domain. I've found that my home ISP is very slow in updating their DNS information and that these gateways often "see" the new domain name a day before I can.
Also, some registrars only update once or twice a day - NetSol updates twice daily, OpenSRS updates in real time.
I don't know too much about .nu domains, but .com, .net, and .org domains are instantly taken out of the core registry, so that others cannot attempt to register them after you have done so. In this case, the domain will not show up in WHOIS, but will not be available for registration either. First come, first serve.
Let me get this straight - the registrar where you purchased your domain says that it is still available? Hmmmmm...
Hizashi 03-20-2001, 09:37 PM Well, I don't much about DNS or ISP's or ping routes, but I figure the only thing I can do now is wait, right? ^_^ The only thing I'm concerned about is that people will try to register my domain name and what will happen then. >< When I tested to see if I could still register wishcafe at nunames, they brought me the credit info page, so I'm assuming people can still register it.
Hizashi 03-21-2001, 05:53 AM I got an email back from Hostrocket saying that they DON'T register .nu names and I have to do that with nunames.com or some other registar. I had signed up for the $20 deal for "New Domain Registration" so along with their economy plan. Since my domain name ISN'T registered, what exactly did I buy? Thanks for any replies! Ugh, I didn't realize getting a domain would be such a hassle. ><
AlaskanWolf 03-21-2001, 07:30 AM Usually the vast majority of all hosting companies only offer $10-$30 domains for .com net org
If you want something like .tv or .cc or .nu, the $20 registration does not apply because the host does not have any special pricing with that NIC, thus you have to go register the domain yourself and pay full price at whatever price the NIC charges...
patrickw 03-21-2001, 09:15 AM Hizashi,
I just visited HostRocket's site to see exactly what you are talking about.
I've always heard that they were a really good company, so perhaps an email could straighten this out and get your money back, since they are not able to register .nu domains.
By the way, the US TLDs (.com, .net, and .org) are probably going to be the cheapest names to purchase. Foreign domains are usually higher, especially the more popular suffixes like .tv and .to.
Registering a .nu with nunames will run you $60 for 2 years, but their prices get lower as the registration term increases.
Best of luck to you - if you have any domain registration related questions feel free to email me directly, my email addy is in my profile.
Hizashi 03-23-2001, 02:09 AM Well, to end off my little domain saga, I'm going to register wish-cafe.net somewhere and have me a home on the net sometime soon, hopefully. ^^
I want to thank you all for your help! :D I hope I didn't come off sounding like a info-leeching passerby since my first post was a plead for help. ^^ I really appreciated your suggestions, especially patrickw, who helped answered some more of my questions by email. As a token of my appreciation...
