There is not one recipe for every site. Think about what you want to convey and experiment a little.
If you have a serious website with let's say a medical theme, you don't want pinks & yellows.
But if you are doing something for a used car dealer you just might want those Pink Flamingos! :D :D
It all depends.
You should remember that color communicates quite a lot -- whether it's used in a website or anyplace else. As long as you take into consideration how specific colors might be rendered on various systems (the old "web-safe" color idea) any colors might be good on any particular website.
While it's not specifically written for the web, I'd recommend this book to designers: The Pantone Guide to Comminicating with Color.

I tried the sessions.edu one and the colors it came up with didn't seem too harmonious. *shrug*

Thats why you do designs, to design something that looks good with using the colours of your choice that reflects what the client wants. ;)

Basic rule of thumb is, if you like it. And the rest of the 5 people you ask to review it likes it. Your safe. :D
Just never use those extremely bright colours like lime green or yellow without knowing what you are doing.

I like white background with some shades of blue or some light graphics. I hate dark colors.

The color scheme should be chosen as per the theme of the site.
