View Full Version : IP number lookup

I've heard many of you do IP number lookups to find out where an IP address is hosted.... which data center, etc.

My question is, how do you do that? Is there a website that provides such a service?

When we receive orders, I want to be able to check the remote IP number we get off our order forms to see if it matches with the location the new customer is giving us. In other words, if the address given to us is from the USA, but the IP number is from somewhere in Indonesia, I want to know.

Can anyone help in this regard?

Thanks in advance :)
Rob.

samspade.org is the best tool

it tells you who owns the block of ips, and occassionaly, who is subleasing that particular ip...

you can also do a tracert and look at the hostname of the last router, and that will usually tell you the datacenter/host they are using...

edit: should have read a little further...to find a geographical location, i use neotrace...though not 100% accurate it works pretty good...

remember, ips can be spoofed easily...

Thanks for the quick replies, guys!
Actually while I was waiting, I found another site: http://visualroute.visualware.com/

It shows geographically where the IP is. Pretty cool!

Thanks again :)
Rob.

That's an alright one, but sometimes because it is java you cannot view the results. I live in the states and I have friends overseas and whenever I try to trace their ip using that I am unable to view the final results. :D

I'm sure I am going to get kicked off here for this reply but our site (can't say which one) actually lets you geographically trace down a host. It's using that same VR software. It's a new feature so I would appreciate feedback - if of course I don't get banned for this post! :cartman:

...Why would you get banned? You are simply telling him a feature he was interested in, regardless if it is your site or not.

Eh - you'd be amazed - I've been thrashed on here more than once for answering people's questions with content from one of my sites. I tried to confirm this with a Mod just yesterday, but I seriously think the policy is you can tell about someone elses site, just not you own.

When you consider how much spam they must try and police on here I guess it sort of makes sense.

But thanks though!

. Well, if you read the rules (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/misc.php?action=forum-rules) you'll see that such a post would pretty clearly be in violation. Basically, you shouldn't promote your own website or business. If someone else recommends your site, you're ok.

Anyway, back on topic, I used to use domainwhitepages extensively, but found its functionality cut back when netsol started limiting the number of requests coming from a given IP so sometimes complete info wouldn't be available without following an extra link. So I registered VisualRoute, and find it to fill the bill very well. I really don't care at all about the map showing the path to what your querying, though... but the real data is easily available, and that's what matters.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean? Which regard?

Looks like Kulman just copied what I had asked earlier.
In any event, my questions have been answered....thanks all for the input :)
