View Full Version : WHMCS vs. Modernbill
bithost(NET) 10-03-2008, 09:49 PM As I mentioned in another thread here recently, we recently switched from Modernbill v. 4.x to WHMCS 3.7.1.
I have been very happy with WHMCS all the way around ... in every category so far, WHMCS is way nicer, better, and better performing than Modernbill.
But one thing I wanted to mention, that I am really happy about :) is email deliverability. I've had a number of local ISPs and web hosts filtering, refusing, or spam-flagging the invoice & receipt emails from Modernbill on the basis that they were formatted like common spam. This has been going on for a couple of years now, and it has only been getting worse.
I'm seeing no such issue with WHMCS. Not only have the spam-bounces all disappeared (so the emails are no longer being refused) but clients who historically have been slow to pay are now paying right away! ........ and they are doing so right after they receive an email from WHMCS. It's not just been a case or two .... we're talking a good number of people who, historically, I've had to send personal emails to, to request payment. So this tells me that ISPs (including Yahoo) were previously flagging our billing emails from Modernbill as spam, but now they are delivering straight into the users' inboxes with WHMCS.
What's really impressed me about this is that we're just using the phpmail() mailer. I thought we'd need to use SMTP sending for sure, to get these emails into peoples' inboxes. That just hasn't been the case. phpmail() has been fine.
So, for those considering the switch, I hope this is helpful to you. This has been a BIG benefit with WHMCS. :gthumb:

servertechs 10-03-2008, 11:55 PM Thank You for your review. We see the reasons why Modern Bill is losing ground to WHMCS
JohnJ 10-04-2008, 12:19 AM When I first got involved in hosting, I purchased a reseller account with HostNine, which included a free ModernBill license. I thought MB was amazing at the time... before I found WHMCS. CompleteSolution is by far the most advanced billing system out there. I absolutely love it.
Rageki-John 10-04-2008, 06:08 PM I've never used Modernbill but I've seen it and I believe that WHMCS has a much better ordering and interface system.
RSkeens 10-04-2008, 06:37 PM The primary problem I have with WHMCS is the lack of multi - currency support. They have had YEARS to implement this but haven't and it's a real headache if you want to bill your clients in different currencies. ModernBill at least has this feature.
I cant understand how even much less used control panels (such as iPanel, etc) have this feature, but not WHMCS.
WHMCS will give you the upper hand. It;s a lot better and user friendly than Modern Bill. Thanks for the review!
All the best,
RDOSTI 10-04-2008, 07:29 PM We just recently migrated from Clientexec to WHMCS. So far WHMCS looks amazingly cool ...I'd rate it better that the rest!
woods01 10-04-2008, 08:03 PM We have used both MB & WHMCS and currently use WHMCS. I will personally say that MB can be made to work probably "better in all areas" then WHMCS, however it takes alot of work and customization. Out of the box WHMCS is very efficient and easy to use and for all it's worth, WHMCS for the most part does everything MB can do and you'll get alot better support out of the WHMCS guys then you will out of MB.
dotcomUNDERGROUND 10-06-2008, 08:17 AM I am happy with WHMCS too :)
david510 10-06-2008, 10:02 AM WHMCS is a step ahead than MB. More easy to manage and looks.
pphillips 10-06-2008, 05:38 PM I'm curious how Modernbill compares now that it's been bought by Parallels and rebranded. Anyone have any experience with that?
mrzippy 10-13-2008, 06:01 PM I'm curious how Modernbill compares now that it's been bought by Parallels and rebranded. Anyone have any experience with that?
Modernbill has a lot of catching up to do, and changing the branding isn't going to fix the core problems -- it is still a "way too complex" billing system that is overly difficult to install and admin.
I personally do not use or recommend WHMCS, but I do think it is better then Modernbill (or plesk billing whatever-it-is-called-now).
XygenHosting 10-13-2008, 07:20 PM Yeah, i am going to have to agree. WHMCS is more userfriendly and is alot easier to manage then Modernbill in my opinion.
Rizie 10-13-2008, 09:02 PM Just one quick question for you.
You say e-mails are delivered properly with WHMCS
Did you change a server? or did you just change from ModernBill to WHMCS on the same server?

Both, actually ... although the server that WHMCS is on now, is in the same Class C and has the identical configuration as the old Modernbill server had. Also, the Modernbill server's IP was not blacklisted and had no negative 'marks' against it... it was a very carefully protected, low mail-volume IP.
The only true difference between the two is the software package. Everything else is the same.
I can say that a big part of WHMCS's delivery success is the format of the message; it's much different from Modernbill's format. I had a couple of ISPs refuse & bounce back the emails sent from Modernbill, citing a "suspicious" format. Those particular ISPs are accepting the WHMCS emails without a problem.

24x7group 10-14-2008, 05:22 AM We also switched over some time ago from Modernbill to WHMCS and we haven't yet regret it. It's a good billing panel, support is very fast and good and so far no complaints. Also 1 of the reasons we made the switch was Modernbill constantly having bugs and no support for Ideal.
jphilipson 10-14-2008, 08:04 AM Years ago we used Modernbill and thought it was terrible. Apparently it hasn't changed much. It was not very intuitive to use, skinning was a pain and upgrading it was a nightmare. WHMCS provides a great, affordable tool for hosts on a budget, it works amazingly well for the price.
darrenkent 05-02-2009, 03:11 PM The primary problem I have with WHMCS is the lack of multi - currency support. They have had YEARS to implement this but haven't and it's a real headache if you want to bill your clients in different currencies. ModernBill at least has this feature.

ModernBill has Multi Currency, yes. But do you realize how many people were complaining about it when they released Multi Currency? - Hundreds! It was full of bugs.
WHMCS would NEVER make that mistake - they NEVER release something that simply does not work the way it should. Then there's the terrible support that ModernBill offers.
Oh, and just to let you guys know, WHMCS is at the final stages of releasing Version 4 - which has a fully functioning Multi Currency, plus tons of new features. It is the biggest version release in the history of WHMCS, and there are over 200,000 clients of WHMCS that are ready for the upgrade!
It's not released to the public yet as testing is still being carried out, but should be out by the middle of May 2009.
WHMCS is the perfect billing solution, no wonder everyone is making the switch!.

I think the multi currency support is due out very soon, the next release I think. Not to sure though

Version 4 of WHMCS is due out any time this week, so make sure to keep checking their website, and get hold of a license and download Version 4 as soon as it's released.
You won't be disappointed guys! Version 4 - with Multi-Currency (plus much more!) ... ModernBill is crap and always will be. Everyone is switching... :)

Yeah for sure , I loved WHMCS the minute i saw its panel .
Crashus 05-06-2009, 01:38 PM So you guys think that WHMCS is better than ModernBill?
I'm just asking because I will maybe set up on of these.
Thanks for the replies.

LOL, definitely. WHMCS is overwhelmed with the amount of people switching from ModernBill to WHMCS, and it's not surprising why so many are switching, WHMCS is based on feedback.
Members are free to add "Feature Requests" on their forum, which is a very fast growing community. WHMCS reviews each and every feature request and if other users vote for it, it'll be added in future versions!
ModernBill doesn't care about users feedback, they just add random features. I wouldn't even use it if it was free.
If you want a complete customer billing and automation system, get WHMCS. Most people who use it are web hosts, although there are lots of web design firms and so on that use it also, so you don't have to be a hosting provider to use it.
Version 4 - exact released date is unknown, but will be out within the next 2 weeks (at most!).
Ditch your existing billing software and get WHMCS...

PCS-Chris 05-06-2009, 02:03 PM Never used Modernbill but I certainley can vouch for WHMCS! It's extremely affordable and has been nothing short of superb for us for the past few years.
The only thing we are starting to see that WHMCS lacks is more options for datacentre management e.g. an easy way to note IP's on each user's account. Currently doing it via notes which isn't ideal as it isnt searchable.

Looks like people here on WHT are really loves WHMCS as a hosting solution, also I've noticed that they really like UberSmith as dedicated server management system, maybe it can handle your needs?

Lol, yeah that's exactly what I have been doing with client's IP's. Sometimes I need to make a record of customer IP addresses, and end up adding them within the "notes" section.
At least WHMCS has all the most needed features now. Version 4 with Multi-Currency just makes me drool! :D
Have a word with Matt, he'll probably add that IP recording feature for you for a few bucks without you having to wait for the next version.
darrenkent 05-06-2009, 10:30 PM *** EXCLUSIVE *** ALERT *** ALERT *** ALERT *** EXCLUSIVE ***
WHMCS Version 4 is now OUT!
(released: 7th May 2009.
What is WHMCS?

This release introduces multi-currency support for WHMCS which allows you to offer your products & services & accept payments in multiple currencies concurrently. Other new features include the ability to setup recurring agreements for a set number of occurences, custom recurring amounts without products, apply refunds to invoices and automated refunds with more gateways, support for multiple attachments per ticket reply and much more...
For a full list of new features see http://forum.whmcs.com/showthread.php?t=19143
panoptical2 05-06-2009, 10:58 PM I actually purchased my owned license of WHMCS from licensepal, and they only charged me $200 as opposed to the $250 WHMCS directly charges you. :)
Crashus 05-07-2009, 12:25 AM I actually purchased my owned license of WHMCS from licensepal, and they only charged me $200 as opposed to the $250 WHMCS directly charges you. :)
And what is the trick? :)
panoptical2 05-07-2009, 12:26 AM Well, the earlier post was referring to how WHMCS offers a 15% refugee discount... I was just pointing out that you can still get it for cheaper. :)
Crashus 05-07-2009, 01:31 AM I see I just can not see the way why it is such a big difference, looks like WHMCS reselling prices are really cheaper.
