I am starting a website. I hope to have about 10,000 hits per month. The website will have a fair amount of jpegs and my question is this:
What amount of bandwidth should I expect to use on a monthly basis?
Which hosts are notoriously bad and I should stay away from?
Thank you for any help you can give!

For a list of hosts to avoid and other information about finding a web host, see http://www.forumhosts.com/hosts.htm
Bandwith is entirely dependant on the size of files.

Can you see why it is impossible to answer such a question? The second question, you might be able to get answers to, but rather than everyone list notoriously bad ones, why don't you post about ones you are considering?
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=3053 lists a rather decent number of hosts that you might want to consider, and by searching for them on the boards, you can get an idea of what's what first hand. (Maybe even join in on some discussions with them?)

i think you should create your page.. find out the size.. and then look for a host... a good host for high bandwidth usage for cheap, is tera-byte. there support is great to.

Gallery type website with 10,000 hit per month wouldn't consum more than 2 gig, I think. 10,000 hit isn't much, you know.

well that depends on the size of the images...

You'll be able to reduce your bandwidth a great deal with some smart design and image crunching too. Are the .jpgs a high res image gallery, or jusy a graphic intensive site design. Can they by converted to gif for a lower file size. Lots of questions as you see. :) You'll get some pretty vague answers (like this one), but that's only due to the masses of possibilities of answers themselves.

Thanks for all the advice. I suppose the right thing to do is first create the site and then I have a little more to go on! Thanks again

Yes, and as you grow, you upgreade the account, eventually to a dedicated server (if it needs it and the site is suceessful). But you really don't know quite yet.
There are some fantastic hosting deals from the hosts on this board! Check the Advertsing Forum, and/or click the word 'host' in my signature to check 'em out!
