Although we have guidelines in place that more or less cover this...

If someone posts a request that seems unreasonable to you, don't comment. Let the thread die a slow painful death with no replies. This will tell the person who posted the request that their request was too much for too little.

It is just a general request, not referring to one person in particular (or I would have emailed that one user directly and not used a thread).

As a user, I hate being educated and told by hosting companies that my request is insane, stupid, ridiculous, ... Or "company X doesn't have a track record", "it's name doesn't sound right", "it's URL was registered yesterday", blah, blah, blah. I went there to look for a deal, if I need education, I definitely will not try to find it from a web hosting company.

here is my $.02
There has been 1 or 2 times where I have commented on an request telling the poster how unreasonable their request is, not because I want to educate them, or put them down, I just don't want to see them next month posting another request simple as that. It is to help them understand a little that hosting providers cannot offer 5gb space and 50gb bandwidth for $20.

Surfads,
If you are being told by hosting companies especially here on WHT (where prices are dirt cheap) that your requests are ,"insane, stupid ....." then you should possibly try to understand why people are telling you that. I've never commented on your requests, but just know that people are trying to help you.

Chicken,
There are times when silence is golden, and there are times where we as hosting providers need to tell people that some of their requests are rediculous. I don't feel that we are doing them justice by letting them go with a crap provider which will in turn only make them post another ludicrous request and it becomes a viscous cycle.

I realize the intentions are good, however you posting that the offer is ridiculous, often bashes hosts who post offers. It may very well be ridiculous, however a thread with no replies is the best way to tell them that.

If you feel the need to express something, PM or email it directly to the thread starter. Otherwise, they make their own mistakes.

hey chicken,
To be honest I never thought about it that way, and you do have a valid point. I will refrain from doing that. I guess I was coming from the vantage point where we have somewhat of a moral and ethical duty to help our members in their quest for finding a decent provider, which will not promise the world for pennies, then fold the next day.

Exactly. People go to request forum to make a request. If we need comments, we know how to search the forum, to search the web. Just because most companies can't match an request doesn't mean nobody can. Those host probably never heard of loss leader sales, and may be they should frequent Hot Deals forums. Ever heard of getting paid to buy a printer, a harddrive,...? I don't need heros, mod-want-to-be in the request forum, just plain good old offers. If I have to come back in a week to look again, it's my problem, not yours. And nobody is going to blame you for not warning us. We are well aware of the risks.
