View Full Version : Billing system for small Web Hosts?

Hi,

I've been running my small Web Host business for a few months and running it by allowing PayPal, Cheques and Cash payments.

I don't have Credit/Debit Card facilities yet.

I'm looking for a Billing system that is suitable for a small-time web host that'll allow customers/clients to pay by Credit/Debit/PayPal which will be paid directly into my PayPal account or Bank Account.

I've heard of Ubersmith but seeing this as a German name I was assuming it is probably better for German/Other European hosts (probably a very stupid assumption no doubt.)

Any recommendations? Suggestions?

Hi CraigML,

I would recommend WHMCS - www.whmcs.com (http://www.whmcs.com)

If you don't have the capital for an Owned Licence, you can also rent one on a monthly basis.

It's perfect for start ups, as it also features a Support Desk.

I would recommend UberSmith for very established hosts - it is definitely in English ;)

Much appreciated.

I'll look right into that one :)

Ubsersmith is what my VPS provider uses and I find it great on the customer side of the system - I know it was in English from that point of view but it was just the name... My assumption was pretty darn stupid after all. :D

(If you're wondering why I'm using a VPS instead of Dedicated it's because this VPS does exactly what I need until I either run low on resources in need of an upgrade of VPS or to Dedicated or generate enough income worth doing the upgrade for.)

Thanks again.

That's smart thinking and there's nothing at fault with that reasoning.

You can consider your billing to be the same upgrade path - when you're ready to outgrow WHMCS (it will need a LOT of clients for this), then you can move on to UberSmith ;)

Take care.

I would also recommend WHMCS. Although, you might find it somewhat pricy to get WHMCS monthly directly from their company, you can purchase it slightly cheaper from their reseller www.licensepal.com. Through Licensepal you will still be able to receive technical support directly from the WHMCS company.

Again, thanks for the advice! :)
I'm glad to find someone finds I'm thinking straight with this.

Although I'm open to anywhere for hosting and my services most of the services I offer and aimed at the local area (approx 60mi. radius) to sole traders, charities, students, individuals and small businesses. And that's just gernally how I'm going about it all to begin with.

Thanks again :)

There's WHMCS, ModernBill, AWBS, Whm AutoPilot, etc..

However, and I can't stress this enough, sooner or later you will want your own custom billing application. I noticed HG is going that route, and has their hands full with the migration. However, this really requires a bunch of startup capital and time.

In my experience, WHMCS was the best of a so-so bunch of current in-product offerings.

You could start up with WHMCS and later move into custom solutions if your need says so.

I'm using Clientexec. I've had no complaints. It took me a while to figure it out, but once you've got it down, invoicing is fast and simple.

I like WHMCS and the ability to easily create a custom skin for it, but I am currently using ClientExec mainly due to the fact that I have tried and tested it before. I believe that WHMCS offers a seven day free trial, so you may want to test that out before purchasing any kind of license....

Yep, saw the trial options and looking into it now.

I'm looking really to have a basic package to keep me going until I can afford to have someone create a custom one for me- since my PHP skills are minor compared to some.

Well, if you can't afford WHMCS, you can also use iPanel or iHost. I've used them in the past and it's a pretty good system. Although, they didn't have as many features so I turned to WHMCS. Clientexec is a pretty good client as well and it's pretty cheap.

I can most certainly afford WHMCS and ClientExec.
But not sure which to choose yet.

I'm just looking for a way to improve the efficiency of my business - and functionality.

Then WHMCS is the best way to go. I use it. It has great feature functions. (Easy to use)

I'd recommend checking out WHMCS. I've used it for months and I love it. :)

I have been sing clientexe for two months now and didn't have much of a problem getting use to it but now I think I have a major dilema and to to find someone that may be able to point me in the right direction. All of a sudden my payment plugins are not working. People sign up, but when they hit submit it goes no where. I do see them in the client list and the packages get setup but no payment feature. Is there someplace where I can go to get some help with this. The program came with the reseller program so when I go to the clientexec knowledge base there is nothing there. Help Please.

Consider this another vote for WHMCS. Easy to setup and use, support is very responsive - I've often got bugfixes in a matter of hours - and the monthly leasing option is very good value for a startup.
