View Full Version : BestOntheNet ripped Hostway
Prash 09-06-2002, 01:28 PM I was asking for some kinda offer when some ripper bumped into me, this company has a seriuos problem opf jacking graphics and styles:
original: www.hostway.com
ripped: www.bestonthenet.com
THis is very sad...
Dymension X 09-06-2002, 01:30 PM Uhh how did they ripped hostway? They look different.
Akash 09-06-2002, 01:33 PM my thoughts exactly
Prash 09-06-2002, 01:33 PM The graphics, page layout is same, only colors r different, tahst a rip, i bet they paid u for saying that...
Prash 09-06-2002, 01:35 PM rippers deserve to die! they shouldn't have clients!

SoftWareRevue 09-06-2002, 01:37 PM How do you know it's a rip?
Prash 09-06-2002, 01:38 PM damn, look at the graphics and layout. its the same only they changed the colors thats a rip!

Again, I will ask; how do you KNOW that one ripped the other?
Prash 09-06-2002, 01:42 PM hostway has had that design since years. i used to be their customer, anyway think about it, look at hostway its much better and neater abnd look at the other, ugly dosn't match + the company is small, hostway is a bug company, and i know they will never do it....
SoftWareRevue 09-06-2002, 01:45 PM In other words; you've contacted neither company to substantiate your claim.
Well, that says enough about that.
Prash 09-06-2002, 01:46 PM its a rip and thats it...
shimmy 09-06-2002, 01:49 PM the graphics on those sites don't look the same at all

hostway.com changed the home page recently, they used to have the graphics that bestonthenet.com (small bussines, and mid/large bussines)
If you take a look, hostway still have those graphics but on the right margin and a lot smallest now.
Looks nothing like a rip
Is it just me (and I may be blind) but do they not look NOTHING alike?? I haven't looked at the source but it doesn't even look like the source could be the same. There are so many sites out nowadays that have different elements from lots of various sites, maybe the designer got their "inspiration" from certain places but it doesn't really look like a blatant rip to me. LOTS of sites have top nav in the form of rectangles... the net goes through trends too, you know.
Prash 09-06-2002, 01:53 PM Guys, it was the old hostways website if u saw old one then it would be rip....
Prash 09-06-2002, 01:54 PM thats exactly like the OLD hostway's design i can garuantee it they ruipped it off cuz hostway added a new design.... rippers!
choose another name 09-06-2002, 02:00 PM I agree with Prash here.
The site's not entirely ripped off, but the graphics for Small Business, and Mid/Large Business HAVE been ripped off.
These graphics have been used by Hostway for at least 18 months (I'd been there customer for that long).
Hostway used to use those exact same graphics, same size & everything. They've just shrunk the size of the graphics since their recent site re-organisation.
And Hostway's been around for 7 years with 100,000 customers. Somehow I doubt that Hostway ripped it off the other guys !!
phatronic 09-06-2002, 02:01 PM Inspired that`s all. Maybe they ripped those blue icons, but there`s a possibility that those images are free. This sounds more like company bashing
UmBillyCord 09-06-2002, 02:02 PM They did rip some content. Look at the light blue graphics of the buildings. Now look at the *new* Hostway site. Hostway scaled down the graphics to a small size, but they are the same. Also, the old site Hostway was where all this came from.
To me, ripping content, even if no longer in use, is wrong.
Eiolon 09-06-2002, 02:04 PM The two look different to me. Perhaps I need my eye check up though.
choose another name 09-06-2002, 02:05 PM I don't think any Small Businesses or Mid/Large Busiensses would be seriously considering them for Hosting anyway.
Has anyone tried clicking on those 2 links ? They're both dead.

No, the graphics has been ripped off, and the design its a copy

choose another name 09-06-2002, 02:12 PM Yes, they've ripped the icons off, but it's a pretty minor offense.
I reckon that ripping photos off, or copying text, is more serious in nature.
And as for the design, I don't think you can copyright a website's "general look & feel". Or if you can, you shouldn't be able to.
And they haven't done a very good job of copying the design anyway. I know which site I think looks more professional. somehow I don't think Hostway will be quaking in their boots at the thought of this competitor.

Uh..it looks different to me. That BestOntheNet has some images missing anyways.
And no, I don't work for BestOntheNet and no they didn't pay me.

Refer to the link to Hostway's old site in the post by Jedito above.
They DEFINATELY ripped off the icons for the Small Business & Mid/Large Business.
But it's a relatively minor offense.
They're only icons after all; not photos or text or company logos.
Akash 09-06-2002, 03:16 PM without either company speaking out, and without prash contacting the companies, you have no proof its a rip.
whats to stop one company from legally buying the rights to the 2nd companies old design???

Yes, technically you're right. No-one has absolute proof.
I doubt that what you've suggested is what happened though.
It's more likely they just ripped off the graphics.
Do you think Hostway would be short of a dollar with 100,000 customers ? I don't think they'd be selling off their old graphics at a Garage Sale.
And do you think BestOnTheNet appear to be corporate wheelers & dealers in the same league as Hostway, with a fat check-book to match?? I think not.
choose another name 09-06-2002, 03:28 PM Keep in mind as well, they're not OLD graphics.
Hostway are still USING them.
They've just shrunk the size of the graphics in their new site design.
Dymension X 09-06-2002, 03:32 PM Hm..."choose another name" is right. But "prash" should have been more percise, I thought he/she meant current layouts. Hope we find out soon. :D

though there is doubt (and I have mine also), you can not assume something like this without asking the companies....if you do so, you're nothing but an everyday flamer
choose another name 09-06-2002, 04:29 PM I don't think Prash was trying to draw a solid conclusion.
He was just pointing it out for everyone's interest.
But hey, Prash, why don't you get a response from BestOnTheNet for us, to sort this out once-and-for-all ??
Email them at sales@bestonthenet.com (I got that from their Contact Us page) and tell them about this issue that's been raised. Give them the hyperlink to this thread, and ask them to kindly resond :

... Can't wait for their reply
choose another name 09-06-2002, 04:31 PM Keep this in mid too akash ... you seem to have overlooked these are not OLD graphics :

modihost 09-06-2002, 04:50 PM some people love nothing more then to stir up ****..
Ex: Jerry Springer
Guest[KKK]: I hate all Blacks, Mexicans, and Chinese people!
Jerry: Well we have a surprise for you! We just happen to have some Blacks, Mexicans, and Chinese people on the show today.
:stickout
Dymension X 09-06-2002, 06:04 PM Haha, so true. :)
Lets see, the hostway site (cannot find server) says:
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Please try the following:
Click the Refresh button, or try again later.
If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.
To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections
blah, blah, blah . . . .
and bestonthenet.com (untitled document) has many empty spaces, so they certainly look different to me.
choose another name 09-06-2002, 06:44 PM Yes, regarding the HOSTWAY.COM site being down, check out this thread :
