I have a stupid question...

How many Counter-strike 1.6 servers would i be able
to run on the following server:

> 2048 Mb memm
> 4096 Mb swap
> 128000Mb HDD
> 400 Gb traffic
> 1 IP address
> Incl. HyperVm Controlpanel
> CentOS 5.2

IMO, not too many. It really depends on the amount of player slots.

For example, you can run 1 -- 32 man server or you can run 2 -- 16 man servers.

I hope that makes sense.

What are you basing your answer on when he didn't even include CPU information?

I would say one. Your traffic is not enough to even support that many people. Also, your specs are weak.

I'd advise that you run a server and a bandwidth monitor and do the sums yourself if you're only going for CS 1.6.

I'm going to have to disagree with the above posters. 400gb should allow you to sell plenty slots, keeping in mind that most slots will be empty for the majority of the time.

Also keep in mind that the tick rate will greatly affect the amount of bandwidth and CPU power required for each player slot (and you don't have a very strong CPU).

I wouldn't recommend selling game servers off of a VPS. You're better off saving up for your own dedicated server

Game servers rely on time keeping ability to run properly. A VPS will not be able to provide that and will therefor perform very poorly.

Jon sure hit it on the spot.

VPS doesn't guarantee syscall latency. Good luck with cache line bounces inside of the VPS :)

Ya, you are probably going to need a bit more then that.

Also depends on ticrate/use of fps boosters etc. Its really, really hard to estimate. I would say probably 100 slots split up.

Overall system usage increases exponentially based on the actual number of users playing. You could have 10 servers totaling over 100 slots if they are always empty or close to empty.

But as soon as one of them gets 10-12 people on it, they will all lag to hell.

Yeah i highly advise you not to run game servers on a VPS, especially that one with such low bandwidth. I'd suggest buying a good dedicated server if you wanted to start your own GSP, a server from a reliable company like limestone for dallas, or singlehop & gigenet for chicago.

Bandwidth isn't a major factor. Even several hundred slots on CS 1.6 might not use even close to 400GB of bandwidth. CPU and RAM are the first to max out, long before you'd even touch 400GB.

low bandwidth? I would like to see an average gameserver do 400GBs of traffic....

32 Player server will take 320GB a month if server is full.

Yet no one asks what connection the server is on, the host could be on a 10mbit line shared across several VMs.

In the GSP business, I have seen more than 20 game servers on one system without using a terabyte of bandwidth per month. Game servers never remain full 24/7, and some are only used for private/passworded usage.
