Can anyone suggest some other domain endings I can try? I have a word in mind, but after trying most of the general domain chackers, the only endings available for it are .org.uk, me.uk, .biz and .nu. I'd like the .nu - but I can't really justify forking out $60 for something which is meant to be a small project.
I don't want anything too expensive, but I'm thinking that's what I'll end up doing as I can't get a suitable domain any other way. *sighs*
Does anyone have any ideas, or places which sell other endings cheaply?

Cost less than $10 and are 10 times better than ANY other "ending" ie TLD.

.net is a very decent TLD. Depending on the need, you can register .org, .biz and .info

Also .us if you fit the - loose - requirements. In my opinion, the vanity domains like .cc, .nu, .ws, .bz and .tv are a waste.

.INFO and .BIZ might be able to provide your needed domain name.

Why don't you register the .biz? .biz's will become popular (just my 2 cents..).
