Question:
What is the difference between multi-domain and add-ons?

Does mutli domain support allow the client access to a "less functional" WHM (if that is the control panel being used)
or is it add-on domains which points to a sub folder?

I think it depends on your host. Multi-domains can be low- featured WHM or Cpanel with add-on domains support. So to be sure, just ask your host if you have separated Cpanel for each domains, if your host answer yes then it must be WHM.

IMO, true Multiple Domain Hosting is where each domain comes with its own control panel and email etc. Add-on domains are just sub-domains with a redirection. A good multiple domain hosting solution is something where the user can have access to their own WHM and create a certian amount of domains...

Right, with cPanel you can have (if your host allows it) addon domains which point an addon domain to a subdirectory of the main domain of the account. So effectively you can add on additional fully blown domain name based websites. The limitation is more to do with email because all email sent to the addon domain will be forwarded to the main domain. The other limitation is that this setup is no good for a reseller, because all the domains will be under the one account.

OK, with WHM, you can set up multiple accounts. Each account has a domain name, and each account is autonomous with it's own cPanel account.

For reseller accounts, WHM allows you to set up individual cPanel accounts for your clients.

Right now I am familiar with cPanel/WHM. What about other control panels?

I understand that one advantage of H-Sphere is that it kind of combines WHM and cPanel functionality in that a user can have an account with multiple domain name based sub-accounts, but they can manage all their accounts with the one log-in.
