Hi there,

I am a web designer/developer that has roughly 5 clients that im currently doing hosting with on shared hosting.

The problem is that the pages are timing out several times a day. Im getting "network time out errors" and MYSQL databases have gone offline and such.

Needless to say, my clients are not happy campers and neither am I.

I'm looking for a more reliable host. Requirements:

-Multiple domain names( I am a reseller)
-PHP 5
-MYSQL databases
-a good amount of bandwidth and disk space (one site is currently getitng roughly 1000 hits a day which i expect to grow, used roughly 4000MB this month so far on just this site)
-email addresses
-Cpanel access preferred as im familiar with it
-private name servers

Budget is roughly $30 a month so... im assuming i'll fall into shared hosting...

If there is an option for a cheaper NON shared solution i would be interested in it as well.. im having these hosting issues right now because it IS shared.

Regards and much appreciated!

How much storage and bandwidth are you currently using? You shouldn't have a problem finding reseller hosting with your budget. The majority of hosts offer cPanel/WHM by default, so you shouldn't have a problem there.

For $30 a month you can get a VPS (virtual private server) with a portion of resources allocated to you and your clients only.

Do a search here and you will find reviews for VPS providers.

You have a decent budget for a good reseller package or you could try the vps root, that may work out better but it could come with its own headaches unless you get it managed.

What things should i be looking for for a managed VPS service?

Much appreciated everyone! Im a bit overwhelmed while looking to switch :)

If you're looking for a managed VPS solution, I would recommend checking out Future Hosting. The service they provide is absolutely amazing. I've purchased multiple VPS's from them and I loved it. They've got great pricing and a friendly support team.

I would not use a $30 VPS for hosting customers. There should be quite decent and generous reseller hosting to be found within that budget. A site pushing 5GB per month is not a scary thing.

im having these hosting issues right now because it IS shared. It's not that it is shared, but how it is managed by the host. Shared/reseller hosting is not supposed to be unbearably unstable. :)

ldcdc right on the money as usual.

What can also come into play is the spec of the servers used by the provider and also how well they manage it.

What may not run well on one host may run fine on another.

I would give shared hosting (reseller) another go before thinking about vps if I were in your shoes.

A control panel bundled with managed vps and maybe free transfer of your sites to new host.
Most reseller hosts offer free website transfer. You can contact vps providers to request this.
A reseller package is more suitable for your requirements and budget.

This is true, but as mentioned by other posters the quality of service on a reseller account is largely dependent upon how well the base host (reseller provider) manages their servers. You could be much better off on a reseller plan that's on a Quad Core server with 4GB+ of ram than on a $30 VPS with 128mb of ram and very restricted CPU usage, or it could be the other way around if the reseller server is poorly managed.

Also you will have to pay extra for VPS management where as reseller plans are fully managed which will let you worry about your clients and not the technical aspects of running your business.

You have a decent budget for a good reseller package or you could try the vps root, that may work out better but it could come with its own headaches unless you get it managed.

VPS is good but IMHO not for reselling hosting - VPS is great when you need to run something that you cannot run in a regular shared environment but doesn't require a full dedicated server. Others will have different viewpoints on this topic.

Best of luck.

$30 that is good budget for VPS server, even managed solution. Just look around. There are plenty of companies there. Anyway with VPS you will be aware about your server limits

I recommend Hostdime. Their prices are start from $30/month. Also has Surpasshosting. Surpasshosting is a member of Hostdime family. Their prices is cheaper. Because they don't offer phone support. Also Hostdime support is little better. We have too many reseller accounts on both of them.

VPS can cause more trouble and headaches, especially a 30$ vps would not be fully proactive managed.

A reseller account is your best solution. I would advise you to look into H-Sphere control panel providers, your accounts will be spread among different servers, so if for any reason there is a server problem only a few clients will be affected. Plus you can resell windows and other goodies with H-Sphere.

I'd recommend Premium Reseller. I switched to them from H9, and had no problems ever since (nearly two months now). Tony (from Premium Reseller's support) is a true helper.

Much appreciated everyone.. I will try shared hosting again for awhile until i grow my business a bit more and a VPS is more cost effective...

I do feel you get what you pay for with hosting :)

I will look into some of the suggestion here and post back later.

Thanks again... a very helpful board!

Oooook... so ive done some more searching around and figure it might be better to get some more help...

The page i own that can not yet post... is a php and mysql script that creates a completely dynamic site... Lots of graphics get uploaded and lots of requests... yadada... It looks like after contacting a few of these companies that i might have the same timing out issue on their shared servers.

I have another site that is a social networking site that is also sql heavy.

Is reseller hosting still the best option?

Im still very newbie when it comes to anything beyond html :)

To get an idea.. the script is roughly based off the klinks directory script that you can google since i cant yet post links ;)

Or google "free stuff geek"... which is the actual page... Hope thats not breaking rules but i dont wanna switch a host to find i have the same problems again :|

most companies who offer reseller plans consider it to have same CPU + MEMORY Usage limits as of shared accounts.
Only advantage would be that instead of using up one cpanel user to serve content from multiple domains (which can easily reach the LIMITS), reseller plan would let you host it individually and have their own CPU SHARE.

I wouldn't really recommend a VPS account if your budget is $30. The cost of cPanel on a VPS is about $10-15. That leaves you with about $15-20 worth of VPS. That won't get you much. Also, cPanel will not run that fast on a VPS with low ram, and which will also cause your websites to become slow.

Most of the reputable hosting providers offer 15-30 day money back. This gives you some time to test everything out without loosing any money.

Try with a reseller account as most of the ppl have suggested here, and than you can always switch to VPS if you need to.

You can even find a host wich offers both (reseller and VPS)... I am sure they would gladly upgrade your account to VPS.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

You should find a reliable Reseller Hosting solution. Then ask the support about your issues, maybe they can help about time outs. And also remember $30 is good for a really nice Reseller account.

And, Good luck with your reselling ventures. :)

I have had excellent support from HostGator and would recommend them any time. They offer a reseller package for around 25 dollars I believe, I hosted with them and sent in about 20 tickets in one week, and every single one was answered within minutes... but I don't know your space/bandwidth requirements of course. I'm sure there are plenty of excellent resellers here in these forums as well!

can anyone suggest a reseller package with sub reseller signups

I know that HostNine gives resellers the ability to resell reseller accounts. I would definitely stay away from WHMReseller/Master Reseller accounts as the software used to manage it is poorly developed/supported/updated etc. Innohosting also offers an IRpanel which I *believe* is still in beta, but should be usable.

OP, your budget is reasonable for reseller hosting, but I would raise it to around 40/m if you wanted a reliable Managed VPS, and cPanel should be able to fit in with that budget.

Mike,

Right on target...there is no reason to restrict yourself to a VPS with the power of a PII when a reseller package from a decent company that will take care of the server based issues for you is well within the budget presented.

Look for good, reliable companies that offer value for the money spent and not the world for pennies, in most cases those companies that are making some money can spend it on support for you...:)

In Shared Reseller hosting, some Control Panels allow you to hosts sites on Linux as well as Windows servers. It is important to check hosts reputation here and on the web. Experience matters when it comes to providing reliable shared hosting.

On VPS option, Hosts can give you an option for a Control Panel that can allow reselling. VPS hosting will take up some of your time in administrative tasks.
