View Full Version : The NEW cPanel 5 mail system
CrowMan 09-06-2002, 12:26 AM I have long ago disabled the auto update in the WHM.
Does anyone know how the NEW cPanel 5 mail system is working out?
What is the upside of the upgrade?

It's supposed to allow for addon domains to have mail options.

I know of one feature which is mail support for addon domains. Probably a few bug fixes thrown in, and im not sure of what other features have been added. No problems to report yet.
edude 09-06-2002, 12:37 AM cPanel 5 Prep The cPanel 5 mail system is almost ready to be shipped. This new system will allow pop accounts for addon and parked domains as well as webmail for the addon and parked domains. The conversion from cPanel 4 mail to cPanel 5 mail requires that the system "link" function work for each user. Some systems have grsecurity and/or other security software that may prevent this system function from working properly. Sysadmins are advised to ensure that normal users can create a hard link to a file that they own before upgrading to cPanel 5. If your system has a broken "link" function, you will not be able to take advantage of this upgrade.
Thats all? aww big deal :(

i thought it was a big deal.....allows for addon domains to get a little closer to being true multiple domain hosting...
edude 09-06-2002, 12:40 AM LOL :D
But i guess add on domains should have more features than just being able to add e-mail accounts for them :(

CrowMan 09-06-2002, 01:03 AM Quick question here.....
What is the difference between an Addon and Parked Domain?
Is this a paper or plastic thing?

addon domains let you do:
domain2.com goes to subsite.domain1.com
and parked domains .com do:
domain2.com goes to domain1.com
CrowMan 09-06-2002, 01:06 AM clockwork,
Thanks.... Fixed!
CrowMan 09-06-2002, 01:11 AM I am not sure I want my customers using addon domains.
Seems like that is cutting in to the profits!
Geek3 09-06-2002, 01:30 AM Sure, version 5.0, expected late September, will allow for addon and parked domains to have pop accounts, but it's really just a lil .htaccess trick, simplified.
Version 7.0, coming out mid 2003 is expected to offer teleportation solutions, quadriple your bank account revenues, and determine who gets into heaven.

Then don't give them add on domains.. its that simple, really!

Unfortunatelly its not that simple, because you have to edit the themes if you don't want that you customer see the option.
The option is there ( which is easy enough removed ), but you can't actually add anything to it, unless it is specified for the plan / package. If a customer asks, just tell them its an extra feature and it costs $$$. Its far from the end of the world.

Well, this brings it a bit closer to being actually WORTH a bit of extra money...

Hardly :D I wouldn't call pointing to a subdomain "true multiple domain hosting". :D Good luck if you try to sell this as Multiple Domain hosting. :stickout

Well, I wouldn't exactly call it "false multiple domain hosting" either. Then again, if you want to provide "true" multiple domain hosting, why not give them whm access? Besides the fact you can't limit the resources ect. its one heck of an option.

We do. :D:agree:
GordonH 09-06-2002, 06:48 AM Hello
I still can't get the IMAP to work from a few weeks ago so I just gave up.
I will wait till its all sorted out.
The parked domain function will only work if you use name servers on the same box or have all your cpanel servers linked together.
If you do link cpanel; servers together the DNS starts struggling when you get above 6000 domains.
We are at approx 10,000 zones on one set of WHM name servers.
We are puitting in a completely seperate DNS solution so its unlikely the multiple domain thing will be workable with it unless we added the DNS manually for each one.
AFAIK additional domains through cpanel don't have frontpage which is why I never offered them.
Plus the mail issue, which is now being addressed.
We do provide multiple domain but we do it by issuing the customer with a cut down version of WHM and their own name servers on the box.
Its trouble free and they like having the extra "privelidges" as they see it.
Gordon
Marty 09-06-2002, 10:00 AM Also note that MySQL disk usage is now displayed in the users control panel. It is still not counted against the disk quota, but it appears to be a step in that direction.
Aussie Bob, I guess I am a brave soul! :)
