joeldg 09-05-2002, 05:32 PM Anyone have any experience with the rackshack.net $99/month dedicated server plans? I am considering switching to one of those for all my sites but am unsure and wondered if anyone has had any experience with those plans.
Thanks
do a search on "rackshack".
You'll find plenty of threads about it.
okihost 09-05-2002, 05:42 PM Yeah if you know linux admin and can keep the server tight on security I say go for it.. Its the most band for your buck.. I would suggest going with the Compaq DL320 servers there a little more but for me it gives me a better peice of mind compared to the plain whiteboxes.. good luck.. i
joeldg 09-05-2002, 05:43 PM oh, I did a more limited search earlier and found only people advertising their own stuff when I searched for info on them.. I was wondering if anyone is currently using them and could tell me without the bias of "this or that".. i.e. is there anyone happy with them?
joeldg 09-05-2002, 05:45 PM OKIhost.. thanks..
Just wondering.. I am a linux sysadmin so that is not the deal.. I noticed the 400/gb a month in the plan and that seemed a little odd.. how is the service and network outages.. I have noticed several other people mention they have downtimes there..
AntiSpamHosts 09-05-2002, 07:05 PM Well, think of it this way:
Would you trust WHT? Same owner, same servers.
tazd9t9 09-05-2002, 07:21 PM it depends on how you run the server, I was on one with a company and had nothing but problems because he overloaded them.
I may be moving to another one soon with someone who knows what they are doing and so far he has had no problems with his
okihost 09-05-2002, 07:56 PM Like taz said depends how much you pack them.. About the downtime not much just a pesky screwdriver a while back and a couple other minor things.. Do a search on some providers that are priced close to RS and you will see REAL downtime... The only way to be 100% sure things are going to go right is put out the bucks for it.. which you could easily have 5-10 servers for the price of one of those. Also RS has pretty good providers and alot of them to backup should something happen.. dowtime happens and I can say I have ahd less downtime with RS in the last 9 months than I have had with another provider in the same price range for the first month,... good luck

Conspiracy ;)
panopticon 09-06-2002, 02:59 AM I like my server at Rackshack. I have been luck (since this is my first server) to have 100% uptime on the hardware and my network segment since signing up with them 5 months ago. I should add that there may have been a few seconds of downtime since I don't have a professional way to monitor it, but I have never found my server down and have used two different free remote monitoring sites which check a couple hundred times per month and they have come back 100% up for the last 5 months. So I'm happy. The only downside is that if you need support for any reason (hardware, network, etc.) it can take 12 hours or so to get a trouble ticket answered and sometimes they close them with reading so you have to submit a new ticket, etc. etc. But you get a great price and from my experience a very good server and network, at the expense of having to be very persistant and staying on support if you need a support issue addressed (multiple troulbe tickets and chat to get it taken care of sometimes). I would say go for it if you need this amount of bandwidth and can't spend more than $150/month.
Erich 09-06-2002, 06:07 AM My experience with Rackhsack has been quite good. Fast response to support tickets, and they do DNS for you.
DotComster 09-06-2002, 09:40 AM leaving RackShack this month - sorry. I am spoiled by all the great support I get at all the other hosts I use. I'm a newbe and really do need support.
RS stuck me with eNsim 3.0 and I have to "cheat" to get 3.1 - not my style, droping their server is much easier and much less hastle for both of us.
IF you are and expert - go with RS.
apollo 09-06-2002, 02:08 PM yes, they are bad if you run into a small problems... then you will see what really cheap servers mean
Dmitriy 09-14-2002, 09:16 PM I just got my server with rackshack.net a couple days ago and I can tell you this: you must know how to administer Linux pretty well if you want to use them. If you are a newbie, don't even thing about getting rackshack
I have been administering Linux/Apache/mySQL for over 2 years and basically thats' what saved me.
The first problem I discovered is that when they release the server to you, even FTP is not enabled. I called support to ask them how to enable FTP on Linux 7.2 (I only worked with Red Hat 6.2 before and there is a different TCP wrapper, different config files)
I did not ask them to do it for me, I only asked how to enable FTP. THeir support did not even know the answer to that question.
I then used their online chat with support, the support guy pretty rudely told me "we don't know how to work plain linux, we only know PLESK. THis is unmanaged server, dude!"
OK, I can take being called dude, but I just can't take it when someone who call himself a tech support does not have the answer to a simple question.
Anyway, I then searached on Google, found an asnwer in 5 minutes and used VI to edit the /etc/xinetd.d/wu-ftpd file and restarted the xinetd process.
Also, I suggest edit telnet file in the same dir and disable it. Only use SSH.
Also, the Apache and mySQL and PHP that supposedly comes with their server are pretty much useless, not installed the way you want them to be installed, old versions (PHP 4.0.6) and more importantly Apache and mySQL not even setup to startup automatically on re-boot.
I had to re-install all anyway, not a big deal really.
However, if I had to do that 2 years ago when I was a newbie to Linux, I would have been totally lost and most likely would have cancelled the server contract.
Having said that, I think that Rachskack offers some of the lowest prices for pretty good servers. Most of the more expensive hosts don't even offer 1.7Ghz Linux servers yet, at at Rachshack you can get one for $119 pre month.
Not bad.
Now I just have to see about the uptime, but that will take time to find out.
seg fault 09-14-2002, 09:29 PM rachshack is deh suk
Nice people, bad network/servers :(
eddy2099 09-14-2002, 10:18 PM My experience with RS has been rather positive. I am new to Linux so I choose the easiest way out which was to get one of the $99 Cobalt RaQ 4i.
The server has been up apart from the several times I rebooted it because of some RaQ patches which require rebooting. Beyond that, it has been behaving rather nicely.
In the beginning, I did run into some problems. It was because I asked for additional IPs and they had to move my box and thus the need to change all the existing IPs to the one on the new subnet.
Their tech support has been pretty quick. I usually get responses within 2 hours. The longest was 1/2 a day because it was late at night and it was the weekend.
I am pretty happy with them. I understand that what I am getting is an Unmanaged Server so of course it means just that.
The server performance and network speed is pretty good. Not the best but good enough for my purpose. I am hosting my own sites so the deal is rather great.

torwill 09-14-2002, 11:06 PM well, been with rackshack for about 3 months before...
to me, their network is fast and pings are low, didn't recall any serious downtime
people, i've asked/searched for most of my questions on their forum... don't expect they'll do much ..as for technical support...
and the server, i had a compaq ...1G, 512RAM and Ensim 3.0, RH7.1
i think they are alright... :stickout
joeldg 09-16-2002, 08:59 PM Thanks all for the responses etc.. Very helpful. I actually use linux at home as my regular OS, so I doubt it will be a problem. Sounds nice to have a host that assumes you are intelligent and not vice-versa..
Thanks again :)
