What qualifications should one have to run a webhost?
I am in my second year of an advanced diploma in business management and spent eighteen months providing 3rd party support to sun and HP servers so I do know my way around the hardware although not too much the software.

I'm guessing networking would be essential but what else?

Well, that's a tough question to answer. I worked for an ISP for years, and have worked in the IT field for many years. I also had some knowledge of business management. But there are others who are young that have little experience and dive in and work hard at it.

I guess the thing to do is just research, learn, make a plan, and stick with it.

It would be nice to start out with a load of cash, maybe 50k

Knowing how to manage a Linux server if you are selling Linux hosting plans I would say would be pretty important aspect of being a successful webmaster, or you can wing it and learn as you go.

Being able to spell English if dealing with clients that speak English is an advantage, of course if you can speak and write more then 1 language that is another advantage.

A person that likes to work, work, work.....

If you have never even been a head webmaster of a website, taking on the hosting industry might be a little over someone's head for newbie's find a partner, this will makes things much easier.
