View Full Version : Who are the best domain registrars?
janet444 09-12-2008, 03:03 PM Hello,
I know this question is similar to a very recent question, but there is one difference. The person with the previous question wanted to pay $7 per domain name.
While I'm used to only paying $10 per domain name, I'm so disgusted with GoDaddy that I just want to get rid of them.
I also plan to write about this experience in my new website on how to build a website. How to choose a domain registrar will be one of my topics.
What I'm looking for in a domain registrar is really simple. All I want is an honest company that will not make it difficult for me to renew my domain, or to let my domain name lapse.
I also want a company that will respond to questions within 24 hours.
In trying to solve my problem with GoDaddy, I have received not so much as an acknowledgement that I sent a support ticket in the last 48 hours.
I just went back to their site to look into this. The pages loaded very slowly and in fact, they loaded so slowly that I got a Firefox message that they were taking too long to respond.
My initial problem was that they have many of my domains set to "auto-renew" and I can't get that setting to change.
I'm really appalled that such a simple service could be handled so badly.
I think many of you recommended a site called namecheap.com but the name makes me suspicious. Are they really okay?
Are there any other registrars you would recommend?
I appreciate your help.
Janet
NameCheap.com or Name.com would be my choices. You must have a very slow internet connection if you are having timeout problems at GoDaddy.
janet444 09-12-2008, 05:51 PM Thank you Chuck and Stub,
Chuck, I will check out register.com. I know I've looked into it in the past.
Stub, I am getting the impression namecheap.com really is an excellent choice after searching the internet. I hadn't heard of name.com. I'll check them out too.
As for my internet connection, I got a message on my PC saying my virtual memory was low. My PC has gotten quite slow since I got it, but that's just one other headache to be thinking about. My connection itself ought to be fine. So I guess I was just blaming GoDaddy for all my computer problems. ;-)
Thanks again!
Janet
It sounds like it. They're both excellent choices, imho.
Jaalam 09-13-2008, 12:16 AM I have always used 1and1 and Godaddy for domains. I used NameCheap once and they are the best so far. I heard name.com is good too.
techsforsupport 09-13-2008, 03:55 AM I have registered domain with name.com and there service is good, their portal is also user friendly.
HostColor 09-13-2008, 04:59 AM The price of domain names is not an issue for consumers the way it is for services providers. As a consumer I prefer to pay $10 per month to have my domain names registered and managed with handy tools. Service providers need to buy domain names as low as possible to make some profit when selling them. So my answer for you is that the best domain registrar is the one that give you more flexibility in your domain management account.
Right Hosting 09-13-2008, 06:49 AM I'm happy using Mydomain.com with the excellent free domain management tools and good prices for reg, transfers & renewals with a coupon. I also like the fact I can still renew a domain at the same price even weeks after expiry like I have done yesterday on a few domains I decided to renew. Apart from them, Moniker are also ok for other types of tld's and Godaddy have a few good deals sometimes and they have a good interface.
asuhot 09-13-2008, 07:23 AM I have registered quite a few domain names with Godaddy without problems. But soon I will be trying NameCheap for my next domain. Lets see how it comes about.
janet444 09-13-2008, 08:04 AM Thanks for all the great replies! I'll look into all those you mentioned. So far I'm leaning towards namecheap.com, but I've never heard of some of these, so I'll look into them.
As for price, I've heard that it doesn't cost any company more than $10 a year for a domain name, so I'm not willing to go with anyone who charges an uncompetitive price.
Besides, I have several websites and a low budget, so, while $15 a year wouldn't be too awful, anything more than that would seem to be a ripoff to me.
As for GoDaddy, they've just been consistently bad, as a host and a domain name registrar. It's not easy to be as bad at this stuff as they are - I'm talking about simple stuff like responding to a ticket within 24 hours. Or acknowledging the ticket has been received.
Or making it possible to set your domain name so that it does not automatically renew.
Not much to ask for.
On the other hand, I've checked out namecheap.com based on Stub's recommendation and heard great things. I'll check out the rest.
This is great info, not just for me but for information for my new website on how to build a website.
Thank you very much!!!!
Janet
DaweiRui 09-13-2008, 08:16 AM I think , Enom.com is best .
asuhot 09-13-2008, 04:14 PM I feel that there is one more advantage by going through NameCheap. When you buy any domain you get free privacy protection, so that your identity is not disclosed in the whois searches. With GoDaddy you have to buy it as an extra feature costing approx $9.00
If you want speed and cheap price, then Name.com using coupon XUP599 for .com domains, gives you free privacy and free google apps for $5.99. A steal, imho.
Janet. Something just occurred to me. You should not be getting your hosting from the same company which reg's you domain. Keep them at separate companies.
speckl 09-13-2008, 10:05 PM I've moved all my domains to namecheap. They've taken care of me over the years. I did have one issue with them with a lost domain, but that was taken care of fairly quickly.

About $9.50
Nobody ever bothers you.
If a domain expires, login with a reasonable time, pay for the domain renewal at the regular price and it's live again. :)
1and1 grabbed $50 for a domain that *they* expired a day early :(
Guess which one is a better deal?
kc8yds 09-14-2008, 02:42 AM namecheap.com has been great to me since moving 28 of my domains there around 7 months ago--eventually going to move the others there as well -- so i'll agree with the others that said namecheap
dordal 09-14-2008, 02:50 AM Dynadot.com is pretty good as well, no hidden costs like others do, great interface and has received very good feedback from others ( http://www.namepros.com/registerindex.php?detail=71 ).
