every once in a while i get the following message:

This text is part of the internal format of your mail folder, and is not
a real message. It is created automatically by the mail system software.
If deleted, important folder data will be lost, and it will be re-created
with the data reset to initial values.

why do i get this message?

I think you check your mail via pine - telnet before. As far as I know you;ll get this message if someone gets into your mail folder.

Any idea how to get this message to stop? It seems to be happening on accounts that have never been accessed by pine on my box.

Thanks,

"Have you used the same mail box with an IMAP client?

IMAP will create this message to store server based info. A POP3 client
doesn't know about it so it just downloads it. If it is missing, IMAP will
recreate it.

Expect to get it regularly if you swap between POP3 and IMAP when accessing
the one mailbox."

IMAP will create this message to store server based info. A POP3 client

This is a pain. Because web based clients use IMAP. We get e-mails all the time from users asking what this is. It is a support pain in the A**.

Has anyone found a way to disable, remove, etc.. this?

Using a IMAP web client was creating my problem. I was using a IMAP web client then going back to outlook and it kept recreating the file. I am using "eCorrei" as my webmail client and there is an option to change it to POP3 instead of IMAP. I am hoping this fixes it.

Thanks!

But then you can not use folders with webmail. Unless I am wrong.

Ahh, good point! With my webmail it is a very simple package and does not use folders so I had not thought about the folders issue.

You have very nice customers. However, they will demand folders once they hear their friend at someother host gets folders. :D

We use to use POP based too. It was great. Fast logins, quick management. Then people wanted web mail "like hotmail". So we went IMAP. It sometimes takes 5 minutes to login! Plus they get these damn messages. Its always something.

I hate this message too. I think I read somewhere that you could install the latest version of qpopper and if you compiled it with a certain option it would eliminate this message. (I just did a quick search on Google (http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&q=%22DON%27T+DELETE+THIS+MESSAGE%22+qpopper) and found some stuff.)

There is also supposed to be a way to eliminate it in the latest version of Pine (but I don't think this will help imap web-based e-mail like SquirrelMail); this info is here: http://www.uvm.edu/~ashawley/pine/faq/problems.html#pseudo-message

Aloha
I get em on a few sites I run as I monitor the email for them to help with problems etc...

I wish there was also a way to stop it
like others have said only on IMAP webmail boxes

arrgghhhhh

any one have any clues or updates about this? we use IMAP and pop and the IMAP is the one giving up slow logins and these annoying messages. any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think you have to unlock /var/spool/mail

We had the slow logins too. I think it's

chmod 1777 /var/spool/mail

Or check squirrelmail.org and search for slow.
