View Full Version : Stupid Computer
IGobyTerry 09-04-2002, 09:17 PM I hate this piece of crap computer. Alright, I'm attempting to install a hack for my forum, when I get this nice error that says "Not enough memory to complete this application. Please close one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again."
Needless to say I only have two windows open, the hack info, and the file needing to be edited. So closing one or more applications isn't really possible because then I wouldn't know what to do. And I have 128 megs of ram in my computer, and I refuse to pay $200 to dell for another 128 megs of RDRam, because they're filthy rotten scum over at Dell. Okay enough of my ranting... now take my poll. Oh and that's not the only problem I have with it, that's just the one I have today. And I have tried rebooting.
RRolfe 09-04-2002, 09:20 PM i have always been partial to throwing things out the window.
shaunewing 09-04-2002, 09:55 PM You left out "throw it down the stairs" :D
I've threw a 486 computer down the stairs once because it didn't want to boot... then I went to work on it and we were finding bits of ram, ICs, etc all over the place for about a month afterwards :stickout.
But, I'll vote for out the window as I've done that in the past too :D

IGobyTerry 09-04-2002, 10:06 PM hmmm... according to the poll it seems some people really want me to break my foot.
MGCJerry 09-05-2002, 02:07 AM You forgot about "smash it repeatly with a hammer".
I have smashed 2 of my computers before because they kept hanging. Talk about a great feeling afterwards...
Nothing like opening the front door and tossing it either on the patio "if possible" or the driveway and hearing the system meet gravity at its worst (better if you live above the first floor). Then finishing it off by going totally primitive on it. All the stress and hatred of days, weeks, months, and years of Windows totally messing up and crashing all condensed into a 20 lb hammer... The feeling of indiscriminate justice is awsome. :)
Just be sure to wear proper eye protection ;) flying debris hurts when it his the eyes...
CubeXHosting 09-05-2002, 02:11 AM Geez, I didn't know computer geeks were so violent (no offense, I'm a super geek......I like to refer to myself as the uber-dork) :stickout
All of the above and THEN send it back to Dell ;)
templates911 09-05-2002, 10:29 AM You forgot explosives.
floppy 09-05-2002, 12:02 PM Make sure your computer is not used as a junkyard with all the heck of a software installed.
Chicken 09-05-2002, 08:30 PM Why not add more ram???
IGobyTerry 09-05-2002, 08:57 PM Cause I think Dell is a bunch of filthy scumbags, and because Intel builds their motherboards special for Dell, Dell computers can only use Dell Ram. I think it's changed with the new Dell computers, but I have one of those first generation P4's so I have to use Dell Ram.
Check with http://www.crucial.com/ IIRC they make the RAM for Dell, amond others.
IGobyTerry 09-05-2002, 09:19 PM Tried crucial. They don't offer RDRam for my system
mind21_98 09-05-2002, 09:53 PM Shoot it with a shotgun. (that choice wasn't on the poll) :)
markblair 09-06-2002, 01:54 AM This is great... "Kick it until it either breaks or my foot does." I wonder how many people have done this and hopefully the PC breaks first. I would hope anyway...
Acronym BOY 09-06-2002, 02:25 AM Why would you pay Dell that much money? (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=17&manufactory=1459&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1)
Crucial is not allowed to make or sell RDRAM.
Secondly, installing hacks for forums usually just involves changing around php in a text editor (notepad if you dont have a fancy one) so how do you not have enough? Ive written basic small forums and run them on P133's with 32 MB of RAM.
markblair 09-06-2002, 02:33 AM I'm sure the problem inogenius is having is more complex than a memory issue. However, it could be that the current memory you have is going bad. Have you noticed any other strange problems in other programs? 128MB is definitely more than enough to have a couple of programs running. What O/S are you using? Just curious and hope that the problem is solved without damage to your foot. :)
With the limited information I have on the entire problem, it does sound like a reload is necessary.
Good luck...
TopDog07 09-06-2002, 02:46 AM Computers can be a pain, when I purchased my second system a few years ago, I personal tore my 133Mhz Cryx (sp?) computer all apart. I only have the front bezel intact as a reminder. :D
