View Full Version : Reseller orr VPS account?
maxzimum 09-10-2008, 08:26 AM One of our customers wants a hosting plan for 500 Email accounts with 5GB space and about 10 GB of data transfer per month. Would a reseller account be appropriate or a VPS account?
Also, which host would you recommened? I have been looking at modvps.com for VPS and hostgator.com for a reseller plan.
Thanks.
websplash 09-10-2008, 08:59 AM Reseller is probably the way to go - it doesn't look like it will be a resource heavy service - also depends on how many e-mail per day they will be sending etc.
freedomhost 09-10-2008, 09:00 AM A decent shared plan from a host would easly cater for this , whats there budget ? do they require webmail access ?
I would not recommend a vps for this a shared account would be cope fine.
Sponsi 09-10-2008, 09:10 AM 500 accounts?
no way for a shared account!
definitely a reseller.. at least a reseller!
If it's 500 accounts then he should have necessary amount of money..
I guess Innohosting with some bigger reseller plans would be OK... don't look at transfer and space only... 500 e-mails is quite a lot and you have to be careful about spam and stuff like that... and remember to ask about limits of e-mails per hour.. some hosts limit that.. maybe not so much on resellers but definitely on shared hosting (yes, it's part of anti-spam policy)
SiberForum 09-10-2008, 10:38 AM I think VPS will be better as that is only for one customer (for his own needs). I have seen here great advertising section with lots of VPS offers. So why don't visit it and choose VPS according your requirements?
Good luck.
cycomholdings 09-10-2008, 11:16 AM Well, are you enough tech savy to support a VPS? If yes then you can go for it since there is no much difference in terms of pricing. Otherwise just stick with a reseller plan.
dhcart 09-10-2008, 11:45 AM If they won't send many emails when it won't be a problem for shared/reseller hosting. But if they exceed the sending email limit that set by your hosting provider when the account will be suspend. For example: The sending email limit of our hosting provider is 350 per hour. Then VPS or a dedicated server is better choice. I recommend Hostdime.
DATARTIM 09-10-2008, 12:22 PM I would go for a vps as there as then the email limit is your own and you are in control. For the specs you need, I'd reccomend 256MB Guaranteed RAM then you should be able to get a pretty good price.
alex-developer 09-10-2008, 01:11 PM My vote for VPS account as the resource usage will be very high - for 500 email clients.
PogiWeb 09-10-2008, 01:33 PM You may want to look into a VPS, as some providers will set limits on the amount of emails per an hour.
businessincrease 09-10-2008, 05:16 PM What's your budget?

i think that 5 Gb are not enough because means 10 Mb for each email that is too small size.
You need at least 10-15 Gb HD so you can give 20-30 Mb for each email.
I know that not all users will use all the email space but will be better if eachone have enough space.

I think that a reseller account will be ok to you

tmax100 09-10-2008, 06:16 PM Do you really want to host your 5GB customer with HostGator or any other budget hosts?
ldcdc 09-10-2008, 06:47 PM If email is important, and with that number, I would probably try a VPS.
10 Mb for each email that is too small size. Text based emails won't require much in terms of space. 10MB can go a pretty long way if properly managed.

Our ResellerZoom and ModVPS divisions offer an affordable solution to start up resellers.
We do not consider ourselves as a Budget host.
Budget Plans offered on our RZ website are for low-traffic, static websites as stated on our Hosting page.
It certainly is not a solution for any reseller looking to find a cheap-er solution as they'll soon find resource limitations can be a pain.
adminranger 09-10-2008, 06:55 PM I would go with reseller. But then again it all depends on the budget that you are working with.
tmax100 09-10-2008, 07:00 PM If your customer has a 5GB website with 500 email accounts, you better be charching enough money to afford a premium host AND put some cash your pocket. If not, something's wrong with you.
Sponsi 09-10-2008, 07:05 PM tmax100 you haven't seen real "budget hosts" : )
I guess it should be at least 100 Megs for every account... even with overselling! 100 Megs is nothing... 100 x 500 = 50 000 Megs.. circa 50 Gigs..
that doesn't look like a reseller account, does it...
EDITED:
tmax100 now I agree with you completely!
maxzimum 09-11-2008, 01:16 AM Yes, I am more worried about the mail limits that hosts have on reseller accounts, which is what prompted me to look at a VPS.
I probably will go with a VPS. Anyone have any experience with modvps.com?
