View Full Version : IE... I hate you
dechant13 09-08-2008, 04:17 PM So a quick question if anyone has ever heard of this... A website of mine displays fine in Firefox, but there is one page that is completely blank except for the background image when opened with IE. Also, when I view the source code on IE it shows all the code I used to build said page, so I'm confused as to why nothing shows up... Anyone know about this disappearing act?
FS - Mike 09-08-2008, 05:20 PM Jebus... that's one hell of a bug. What IE version?
Thats got to suck. Maybe your site isn't compatible in Internet Explorer. That happend to my friend's site. Worked fine in FF but not in IE. He rebuild the whole site in Dreamweaver CS3 and it works fine now.
All the best,
AL-Benjamin 09-08-2008, 05:27 PM it hasn't got some crazy use of layers or anything?
foobic 09-08-2008, 08:50 PM First check that you're using a valid doctype and that the page validates (eg. use the W3C validator (http://validator.w3.org/)). If that doesn't work show us a test page.
I've seen something similar in CMS-driven sites where an author has copied / pasted the content from MS Word. Ironically, Firefox and other independent browsers display it perfectly but IE shows nothing at all... :D
Kristy 09-08-2008, 09:40 PM I have found that FF goes easier on source code then IE (for example, if usemap=test, instead of usemap=#test, FF will allow the map but IE wont). If you post a link, maybe we can take a look at it for you?
allportpc 09-08-2008, 09:44 PM I have Beta-ed IE8 and it is the worst thing to ever come out of Microsoft, it even sucks more than Windows ME.
FS - Mike 09-09-2008, 10:31 AM IE8 actually supports CSS which is good. Unlike IE7. All the versions of IE are terrible to stuff that is available now. Microsoft are terrible at keeping up with their browser competition.
dechant13 09-09-2008, 01:16 PM Thanks everyone for the comments, I built the site being as code-compliant as possible (use dreamweaver for visuals but code in code view). I'm trying some things right, thanks again for feedback. Weird though, every page on the site shows up except for the one, and they are all built using the same basic XHTML and style sheets... weird. I'm not sure if this is allowed, but the the link is girvangrille.com. Thanks again
FastServ 09-09-2008, 01:28 PM My guess is the "onload" javascript in the broken page (which is absent from the working pages). Your javascript is probably broken and stopping the page from loading.
dechant13 09-09-2008, 01:29 PM thanks fastserv, i'll check that out
dechant13 09-09-2008, 01:40 PM Just wanted to say fastserv that it is in fact the javascript. I took it out and the page works fine. I'll rebuild the js and hope for the best. Thanks a ton.
easy4host 09-09-2008, 03:44 PM google's new browser beta is out, anybody check it out? very fast too. Its called Google Chrome
Outlaw Web Master 09-09-2008, 04:08 PM Google's new multi-million pound internet browser 'Chrome' has come under fire after a legal 'oversight' meant users lost the copyright of their own files.
The global giant received a flood of complaints because of a 'hidden' clause in its user agreement that claimed legal ownership of anything it displayed.
It meant anyone using the browser effectively lost the rights to their own photographs, videos, documents and other computer files stored or displayed online.

barry100 09-15-2008, 02:38 PM same thign happened to me once .. what i did was i didnt put a finishing > on a meta tag and the whole page wouldnt show in IE ..
Jz1977 09-15-2008, 07:16 PM its a problem with tables and css. use DIVS instead of tables, do not use margins in CSS. this is usually the case when IE goofs up and firefox doesn't.
Jz1977 09-15-2008, 07:17 PM yea, i checked out google browser. it got uninstalled faster than it got installed. Its a great marketing tool for google, but not for me.

I wonder when people will understand that Google changed their user agreement within a day to fix it. The above case is no more a reality.

I never had a problem with margins in IE when I use DIVs. What type of problems are you having with CSS margins?

But around 80% of people are still using IE. You better start working on IE compatibility :)
IE... I hate you
Me too!
awatson 10-07-2008, 02:06 PM I'm not a big fan of IE either, but the fact is if you want your site to work well for most of you users, you need to make it work in IE. It's been that way for a long, long time.
seasonsbest 10-08-2008, 01:26 PM I new what the contents of this thread would be when I looked lol. I recently had a client tell me that the new IE was far more superior then any other browser out there.
What a laugh! Cross browser checking with IE is a pain for sure!
Hannan 10-08-2008, 10:06 PM IE is sucks!! it's pissed me off everytime!! bless FF!!
