View Full Version : Longest Stay With Same Host?
Curtis H. 09-04-2002, 03:40 PM Okay,
Clients jump from one host to another for different reasons. My question is...
What's the longest you've stayed with the same host and who are they?
I'll start. :D
[current host] F5hosting: About 1 year, 3 months now.
[former host] Powersurge.net: Almost 2 years. Outgrew their plans.
alexvgtb 09-04-2002, 03:47 PM 2 years and 6 months... with Interland...
Geek3 09-04-2002, 03:50 PM wow, i envy ALL of you. The past 5 hosts I was with seemed like great deals but ended up just kapooie! Although i never tried the ones you all mentioned, hence why I decided to throw in the towel and start a hosting biz from ground up!
But i guess the longest I was ever with ONE host had to have been 5 months (christianwebhost.com). They had a great deal but speed is not on the top of their list :-/
I'm with Pair.com for almost 2 years now.
Excellent support, excellent uptime, but rather expensive :)
OhSoKorny 09-04-2002, 04:41 PM Paid hosting? Geocities for four months. Then again, I've only done paid hosting for six months.... *G* Right now, Shaghost is my thing.

But it's worth it, you got what you paid for!
TeleSouthNet 09-04-2002, 04:49 PM 5 years 4 months.....TeleSouth Network Inc
viGeek 09-04-2002, 04:52 PM VenturesOnline - 2 Years
HostRocket - 9 Months (Still with them)
intellec 09-04-2002, 05:17 PM Two longest are:
Spire for about 9 months (albanza dedi - never down, needed more features)
VenturesOnline for almost 11 months (it was fine, but noticed some deterioration in tech service around the time Daniel & others left. had some issues with the IP changes for my nameservers and the domains that became unparked)
Two shortest are: C-I-Host (what service?) 3 days and a charegback, OLM (did not want to deal with nickel & dime stuff not disclosed) 5 days and a chargeback.
Currently using Verio (premium pricing for the premium data centers, but they are there for you and will jump through hoops...kicked an adult site out when I alerted them too it - service was so good that I transfered hosted domain registration), AlwaysWebHosting (service has been solid, enjoying the bandwidth, drive space, and multiple domain features), FeaturePrice (about ready to kick them to the curb if they don't get it together - noticed some downgrading of their web software lately which is not a good sign - had to set up watchdog bot to email me and both their NOCs about downtime, when their net is not working and it has been active at times)
Here you go, every host I have had an account at for the last five years. Keep in mind this was more than one site, and these were my personal "paid out of my pocket" sites.
* The one I work for has rules about us posting on message boards, so there is one I will not be rating.
HostRocket 4 months - all without cgi working, got tired of hearing promises that it was going to be fixed and left. They might be better now, but a good host would have refunded or given us a month free for every month they couldn't get the cgi to work. I can't believe they charged people for that. I wasn't just out the money, that was four months I could have been with a REAL host! I was pissed to see that they could later afford a PixelBrick design for their site.
0 stars out of ten.
VenturesOnline 18 months - really very good, except too many data center moves took their toll on my patience. Plans are a bit limited. Uptime, if you don't count 2 DC changes, 3 HD crashes, couple of server changes, 1 router failure, was very good.
8 stars out of ten (I'm just not sure if I should take off points for hardware failures)
LinuxWeb 6 months - not bad, just not impressive at the time. They only had php3, and raised their prices by about $3 after a couple of months. Not very flexable either. Uptime, was great though, and everything worked.
7+ stars out of ten
Tera-byte 3 years and counting - Everything works, and uptime has been close to 100%. This account in on a raq, and I have heard of some uptime issues with their *nix servers though. The *nix accounts have more features, than the raqs, but I never had a problem, so I didn't change it. They also have a very large transfer allowance.
9 stars out of ten (the unix people might only give them 8 stars though)
C_I_Host - 3 months, because at the time you had to pay for three months. I knew as soon as I FTPed in, and could see every one elses accounts, including their email accounts on the server, that this host sucked BIGTIME. Then I heard how they continue to charge people after they leave so I changed my entire bank account number as well as my CC numbers before leaving. Darn if they didn't continue to bill me for over a year, complaining that my CC was declined.
-5 stars out of ten for being dishonest in addition to sucking.
Edited incase someone sees a thread where I mention some hosts not listed above.
There are a couple more that I recently signed up with. I have had less than a month there with no problems, but won't give a raving review of them yet.
phantasywork 09-04-2002, 06:20 PM Venture's Online over 1yr , most of it was on the V650 plan they used to offer.
icuservices going on 2 yrs and yes I still have a account there
:stickout
I wont even bother to list all the host that I wasted my money on that didn't workout and offered poor service
denic 09-04-2002, 08:32 PM I signed up with pair.com on 10/26/1997, so next month it will be 5 years.
Before that, I used Compuserve (ourworld.compuserve.com) for a web site. I cancelled my Compuserve account years ago, but that page is still accessible. Luckily I put a redirect on it to my "real" web site before I cancelled.
tribby 09-04-2002, 09:04 PM I'e had an account with pair.com for close to 4 years.
tilted 09-04-2002, 09:48 PM We still have our first client since 1996 and three others from 1997, and they're not family.

although that's the best way to start out (with family). However, some of em think they can get some sweet deals if you're with family. ;)
1Plan - 1.5 years Great Everything for the money! I wouldnt be switching if it werent for the fact that I've really outgrown them and need a reseller package which they dont offer.
nuthin 09-04-2002, 11:54 PM infodoma.com - 4 months
support + pricing is good.
Barbara 09-06-2002, 03:53 PM Two years in November with AtomHost.
man-ching 09-06-2002, 05:42 PM 1 year with www web hosting network (http://www.www-hosting.net) good support, but downtime is an issue because the server I was on is overloaded:(
DutchSchultz 09-06-2002, 05:51 PM 13 months with www.bytewell.com
They are not the cheapest, but they are fast and friendly.
edude 09-06-2002, 06:12 PM JaguarPC - 2 Years, when they were new, i think around 1998.
Excellent service, i believe Greg still provides the same excellent service with a personal touch till now.
The only reason i left was to get my own server =).
JBIZ718 09-06-2002, 07:38 PM Webreseller - 2+ years, then they baught my company.
talash 09-06-2002, 11:36 PM Hi,
We have our ded server with Catalog for last two years. I give them 7/10
Before that we were hosted with Colossus. I give them 4/10.
We run a small hosting company based on this dedicated server and our oldest customer is almost four year old :)
So we can have relay runs in hosting industry too !
Abhishek
secludo 09-06-2002, 11:50 PM 2 years and a few months with olm.net - I still have 2 accounts with them but am in the process of cancelling since I just got a reseller account rather than having 13 "regular" accounts :)
Csoves 09-07-2002, 02:58 PM I was with endore.com for over a year. They are really good for a Windows host. One time I had to switch servers and because my page was down for 5 minutes they gave me 3 months free hosting. Their tech support always emailed me back after only a few minutes too.
I wish I could still be with them, but I wanted to venture into the lovely world of mysql and they didn't offer that.
lavalamp 09-07-2002, 07:40 PM I've had 3 hosts since 1999.
:) Powersurge.net from 1999 to early 2002 (almost 3 years!).
Great service, no problems. I too "outgrew" their service. I saw Imhosted.com's ads for 2GB/20GB costing less than my mid 1999 plan so I thought I'd give it a shot. In hindsight I should have stayed with Powersurge. To this day I still recommend friends who are new to webhosting to get accounts at Powersurge.net.
:( Imhosted.com
Tried them for 24 days. The hosting itself was not bad, and Cpanel worked ok. I had some technical issues and their tech support did not respond so I quit before having to make my painful DNS change. If you are looking for a self-service webhost and price/storage was the ONLY reason, then I would probably say they are ok. If you need service or good support look elsewhere. In any event, Leon from their corporate department saw to it that I got my refund after I posted about it on WHT so they are definately interested in righting any wrongs.
:D Onefusion.com
My current host. Moved to them while I was having problems with previous host. Their presales guys responded to my emails within 1 hour (somehow they're always available - I work on my website at night and sometimes have technical questions - I assume it's due to the time difference between US and Asia). Anyways, I've been with them one month and their service is good. They even send an ocassional email asking me how things are going. I will stop short of recommending them because of the length of time I have had my site hosted here but so far I'm happy.

Georgina 09-07-2002, 11:38 PM I've been with Dreamhost since 1998 and have been impressed by their reliability and service. Though they are having some problems with mail server slowness at the moment (which they have been very up front about), I can think of only one time in the last four years when my sites have been down for more than half an hour, and that was a scheduled outage.
dreamrae.com 09-08-2002, 02:11 AM almost 1 month @ wizards hosting....dont ask why this is my longest stay @ 1 host, just know that there are too many ****ed up ones out there waiting for you to sign up with them in a a sad attempt to steal all your $$$
FastNet for about 2 years...never noticed any down time, but pricing is now much higher than when I signed up. They had a price lock, though, so my pricing never went up. Tech support emails were always answered in less than 3 hours.
FastNet was also called 123 Host Me when I signed up. I believe that FastNet bought them.

It worries me when people think that in general about all hosts :bawling:
trparky 10-05-2002, 10:31 AM About a year and a half with OLM.Net.
1-10 Rating
Technical Support - 8
Customer Service - 6
Plans - 5
Uptime - 2
(Constant downtime for no reason at all, couldn't keep a damn linux server up for more than 6 days)
Overall, I give the company a rating of 5.25.
I have moved to RochenHost now and am extremely happy. :D
wd5gnr 10-05-2002, 11:43 AM I was with www.clearlight.com for 6 years until recently. Great service and practically no down time. I didn't mind HP/UX, but it isn't Linux and no real control panel.
I switched to caged tornado only because I have grown too big to keep bothering the provider to do things like create e-mail addresses, install certs, etc. Also, I wanted to host a few subdomains and the CyberWings fiasco had left me with 4 or 5 non critical sites that needed a home. I should mention, Don at Clearlight was great about handling requests, but you get to the point where you want to do it yourself.
I like having a VDS at caged tornado, but it probably isn't for those that aren't Unix guys at heart. You do have to muck about a bit. I'd rather have a 100% dedicated host, but I'm not quite ready to shell out $100/month when $30 or $40/month will do it.
I had considered trying to find another company about my size locally and "split" a rackshack server with them. Run FreeVSD for the other company or something and that would give me my server, plus they would have 50% of the server, but everyone I know is either much larger or much smaller than I am :-)

GordonH 10-05-2002, 11:51 AM I have a four year old account with below10host.com
Being bone idle i have never bothered moving the site, even though I have 30 dedicated servers it could sit on.
Gordon
shapeshifter 10-07-2002, 12:03 AM I am currently with Dreamhost - moved there within the last month.
likes - the control panel, price, automated feature and domain activation, and you can see where you are in the support q
dislikes - cant import/export to their webmail, support is slow (almost 24 hours on my last ticket) and not real knowledgable in areas not norm for them
previous host - imhosted
likes - good reseller plan with lots of options and ability to set up reseller help system, good price
dislikes - 80% of my support tickets went unanswered
Tough to host accounts with a no support system
*****
come and went within a month - poor integration of their tools, too confusing to put my clients thru
AIT - 1 1/2 days - it took them that long to set up my reseller account - by then I had enough time to look thru their tools and decided I didnt want to even stay thru my 30 day trial period. FYI - you must get out before the end of the 30 days or you are stuck with a 1 year contract.
Now, as you can see, it seems that I haven't found the place I am happy with yet - that's why I am here. I am looking for a hosting company with great support, prefer phone support, but would settle for email support if it was speedy and helpful. Wanting to host multiple domains but not big enough for a dedicated server (YET).
From what I have seen from the postings I am thinking seriously about venturesonline. Does anyone know what webmail they use? I have one client that cannot use a pop pc based client, she needs some type of web based mail with import/export. So if anyone knows what venturesonline has it may save me from trying another host.
The other hosting company I am looking at is Burstnet - anyone have comments on them?
Thanks:)
wth_0611 10-07-2002, 01:49 PM OLM ... 6 years.
Reliability - excellent and we have service at both datacenters.
Support - good to very good. Some issues at times, but expected
Service - A bit behind in offering the latest features, but helps with the reliability ... acceptable tradeoff for us.
Pucca 10-07-2002, 02:48 PM 2 years with phpwebhosting.com
Support: 10/10
Plans: 9/10
Uptime: 10/10
Only reason I moved was because I barely used up any bandwidth and figured I could be saving much more money elsewhere.
Two months with edgehost.com (current host)
Support: 10/10
Plans: 10/10
Uptime: 10/10
A great host. No problems other than a few hours of downtime a few weeks back. But it seems like everything's under control again. And I'm looking forward to some 100% uptime! :D
hostpath.com 10-07-2002, 03:26 PM I've had a Web presence in one form or another with the best hosting company I know of since 1996. No matter who else I've tried -- and I've tried many -- I can't find anyone better. I give them a solid 9.5 out of 10.
Despite having our own servers, I still have stuff hosted with them.
Wil_bc 10-07-2002, 10:25 PM We have been with quite a few different hosts over the years, some have been absolutely horrible but our current host has been awesome. We have been with them for 2 yrs and I can't say enough about how great their service is and how easy they are to deal with. The host is Pacific Online (http://www.paconline.net).
Pacific Online doesn't do pHp so our bulletin board is hosted by www.hosting4less.com, we have been with them for 3 months and the service has been excellent also.
It's nice to be able to do business with good, properly run companies.

What's the longest you've stayed with the same host and who are they?
Current Hosts
Verio/Iserver for six years.
http://www.Cobaltracks.com for two years.
As a Verio reseller, I still have clients from 1997. My clients sites and my personal ecommerce sites stay on Verio due to their reliability and uptime. My other sites that don't require the absolute high uptime go on dedicated servers with Cobaltracks.
Previous Hosts:
http://www.rackspace.com
http://www.webpg.net
http://www.tera-byte.com
http://www.vservers.com
These hosts were decent just slightly more expensive. I would still recomend Rackspace, Webpg, and tera-byte to people looking for hosting.
-Mike
Turboz 10-08-2002, 03:41 PM Prohosting: 6 or 7 months
Cadenet: around 5 months until they went bust..
Geocities: (Suprisingly) approx 3 years (Well when it's free, you don't need to move really)..
I recently switched to Eryxma for my paid services - They apparently have over 5000 sites since they started in March, and they seem very good. I'm very pleased with my Eryxma account, and they actually look like they are going places (unlike most hosts these days).
TeleSouthNet 10-08-2002, 03:53 PM TeleSouth Network - 5 and a half years :-)
IGobyTerry 10-08-2002, 04:00 PM Apixhosting - about 6 months
F5Hosting - 1 Month (Apix was handed over to F5)
Now I am a reseller for eMegaweb.net.
bully28 10-09-2002, 12:31 AM 1 year wtih dreamhost (outgrew)
2 year with aletia-now jaguar (too many server problems)
8 months with alwayswebhosting/AWH (mostly good, ronnie is a great guy, but trend has been somewhat negative past 6 to 8 weeks--grwing pains are hurting me and clients who are there)
edited to change years and clarify.
cdnmama 10-09-2002, 12:44 AM This looks like a good thread for a first post ;) My first hosting account was with Canaca for one year, never again. Support was terrible there. Moved to Phenominet and have been there for over a year. Support is good and fast! Got a second domain, have it hosted at Powweb for about 8 months now. Although they have had troubles, I'm fairly happy with them :)

interplug 10-09-2002, 01:07 AM IServer (now Verio Web Hosting) for almost 7 years - Will hit that mark on Nov 14th.

Run! ReadyHosting was the absolute worst hosting experience I've ever had.
bully28 10-09-2002, 07:21 PM do a search on this forum under ReadyHosting. i think you'll get your answer there (read: run)
hostpath.com 10-11-2002, 01:32 PM BTW: I forgot to mention the shared host that I love so much
Need A Dot Com (www.needa.com)
They're great folks and like I said, I've hosted with them and prior to getting my own servers I've hosted many clients with them as well.
refcom 10-11-2002, 03:04 PM Our customer base is rooted in our initial customers from 1997, we still host about 40% of the customers who ordered in 1997.
The most common reason for cancelling services:
"My web site was a hobby, I don't want to run it anymore."
"Site just isn't performing like I thought it would... I had big ideas to make millions, instead I just invest millions of hours and no one is coming - I'm going to take on something else."
Etc... A lot of people leave their web host simply because they don't want to run a web site anymore. I get this a lot.
And of course, there's always that small percentage of customers that no web host wants to admit: the ones that you just can't make happy no matter what you do for them (barring of course driving to their house... but for $20/month that just can't happen - even if they only live on city away.)
torn_user 11-07-2002, 06:37 PM Well here's my personal run down:
Hostway - 3 years
Left because they were charging me 2 arms, a leg, and a spleen. I had a problem where a lamer was hitting my formmail.pl before that exploit was known and I called Hostway. Seems I didn't have "phone level support", so I let them attack their server for a few hours and then I gave up and killed my accounts.
Powweb - 9 months
Would have left sooner, but I didn't want to loose $$$ on the year I paid for multiple accounts after their servers crapped out again and again again and again and......
Softerweb - currently going on 9 months?
Awesome support, speedy setup, no issues. One of the few places I trust to host my email. :)
TotallyHosted - maybe 45 days?
Reseller account went down for days into weeks, no email, no support, finally left after paying for 3 months. No refund even after they admitted crappy service. Prices now jumped for plans.
AlphaOmega - currently going on 4 months?
Danny has been on the ball everytime I have asked a question or needed assistance with my reseller account. I think the only downtime I remember was a faster processor upgrade. I am very pleased and will stay with them unless I move up and get a full dedicated server. :)
One of my spare computers and a fairly good ADSL line - 2 years. :p

Huh? Verio's cheapest month to month plan is $25. You can get a plan at tera-byte for $10 mo or less.
Also, vservers is now Interland, and their cheapest plan is $17 mo.
Why put Rackspace in the mix? They don't offer shared hosting plans.

Found out 12/4 that they got bought out by Dot5hosting. Is there some kind of award for being with the most hosts in one year? hehe And to make matters worse this is the 3 time this year I have paid extra and been screwed. Such as paid a year ahead, host sucked. Paid another year ahead host got bought out after 7 months. Paid 3 months ahead host fell apart after 45 days.
*sigh* I guess it's time to go dedicated. :/

If so, I'm in the running, damnit. I *hate* moving my domains. This year has just plain SUCKED out loud in that respect:
1. As of 2/02 I was with amhosting.net, and had been with them for over 2 years. Can't say enough good things about them; I simply outgrew them. 9.5/10
2. Moved to myvirtualnet.net. Stayed 2 months. downtime, downtime, downtime, downtime. 5/10
3. Moved to alwayswebhosting. Overall, quality was quite good. Had to move all domains to a new server while there (does that constitute a new host? :). Left in November due to SSH fiasco (you can read about that elsewhere). 6.5/10
4. Based on reviews here I moved to Manlius.com. MISTAKE! I've been there 2.5 weeks and have had more downtime than with the previous 3 combined this year. I'm getting the hell out of there ASAP. Tech support is unresponsive and snippy. All my domains as well as their support forum are down (again) as I type this. 1/10
5. Awaiting account creation at myacen.com (again, chosen based on feedback here). We'll see. I'm [CENSORED] tired of moving. This is enough to drive you to drink. My site users aren't happy either.

The question didn't specify shared hosting or dedicated hosting. Some of the providers were shared, some were dedicated.
When I used the hosts, the prices were comparable. Tera Byte used to charge a $500 deposit plus $210/month for a capped 128 kbs line (40 gigs a month) RAQ3 server compared to Cobalt Racks $99/month RAQ3 (50 gigs transfer) server with no deposit. Tera Byte prices came down significantly since then. Rack Space was only slightly higher than Tera Byte at that time.
Verio has a 200 meg plan with 8 gigs transfer for $12.75 a month. The account has some nice features that the others just can't match. Example: Verio gives you immediate access to the online backups for those stupid rm -R /wrong_directory mistakes. Now the virtual private servers from Verio are about half the price of similar plans offered by Interland. Pricing for Verio taken from http://www.viaverio.com with a reseller discount.

dsotmoon 12-07-2002, 12:06 PM I have had one account with http://www.aplushosting.com for almost 2 years, these guys are GREAT, I have had 1 down time in 2 years and that was a IP change do to a server move and it only lasted a few minutes, also their support is the best, they respond WITHIN MINUTES each and every time, they send out advanced warning for updates for any hardware or software changes, server changes, plus you automatically become a reseller for their services at a discount and can set up new accounts through your control panel, they are far from the best priced host out there, but I do think they are the best, and no i dont work for them :)
I have also had a reseller account at ehostpros.com for almost 2 months now, their support and uptime has been great so far and I'm hoping it stays that way.
ArtieFishill 12-09-2002, 03:45 PM I have an acct over at phpwebhosting.com that's been there for over 2 1/2 years...decent hosts, but price is little high considering the deals to be had these days ($9.95/mo for 125mb and unMETERED transfer). They've been very reliable, and the servers are fairly robust and fast...FTP is quick, too, which is important to me. I have all my other sites on my reseller acct but keep that one as my backup...and I'm too lazy to move it..lol.
Kane503 12-31-2002, 12:23 AM wow this is good thread to hear about all kind of hosting out there.
Well, I have been using the LiquidWeb.com for almost 3 years now, and I do believe they're offer the good Space & BW at my plan, which is Professional Plan. But the most think I like about their service is the Toll Fee Call support always helping good, and their support ticket, which is one of the main thing I need and their connection is fast, unless at the nearly out of B.W of end of month ehehe .
8.9/10
We've been with Think Host (http://www.thinkhost.com/) for three years now. Unbeatable service.
NexDog 12-31-2002, 01:34 AM Hostnexus - 1 year. Best I've been with. ;)
eddy2099 12-31-2002, 01:48 AM In the past, was with CobaltRack for about 2 years.
megagente 12-31-2002, 01:59 AM The best one I used was Netfirms free services. I consider their anual fee too high.
HostUDirect 12-31-2002, 02:29 AM Back when I use to run multiple sites, I would say the longest i've stayed with a host was 6 months.
www.websolo.com - Stuck with them about twoish or so years.
Used to offer unmetered space / bandwidth for about $10 a month. Then dropped (with no warning) to 500mb space / unmetered bandwidth without warning, and I still stuck with them. Most recently the 500mb plan is now $35 a month, and I just couldn't afford it any more. I'd give it a 7/10 - some downtime, not too bad, not the best features (No PHP at all), but fast servers.
boxman 01-11-2003, 02:27 AM So almost six years of virtual hosting. I almost left in the first year when something changed with their providers and my FTP connections kept timing out. Some bottleneck at a Sprint router in New Jersey. Then I wanted to strangle them when they moved data centers at the exact peak of the 1998 Christmas season.
The server melted three times that I know of -- twice in September 1998 and once last August. But I suppose it has to happen now and then over the long run.
They have improved and tightened up the ship dramatically over all those years. Any complaint I ever had has been fixed. Best of all, they always seemed honest and reasonable and straightforward -- no slick sales guys, arbitrary terms, price gouging, runaround, etc.
Now I am switching to a coloated server, which they don't do, so I might not make it to six years ...
Yeah that used to tick me off with websolo.com - the FTP timeout was I think 30 or 60 seconds. If I wanted to make a simple change to my site, I would have to close and reopen a connection.
It was fast, I'll give them that. My current host doesn't seem to be that fast, but I'll take the no FTP timeout. I'm not uploading large files anyway.

Mike the newbie 01-11-2003, 09:43 PM I've been with Tera-Byte.com for about two years, the first year on a dedicated RAQ, the second year colo. I stayed there because the support is excellent, the network is reliable, and the communications about my accounts have been very good.
I also have a couple of small hosting accounts. I have had them with ***** (yuck!), Weinbar (very good until they imploded), and most recently Affordablehost.com (poor support, horrible server response times, bad customer communications). Now I host those two accounts on my hobby colo at Tera-Byte.com.
So of the for hosting companies that I've used, I can only give the two thumbs up :agree: :agree: to Tera-Byte.com.
wlandman 01-14-2003, 01:43 AM I've had Communitech for a while and used to pay 24.95 . I didn't really use it but my only complaint was the way way way overloaded servers.
And I was on the server entitled earth. The servers were mighty powerful but incredibly slow.
silversurfer 01-14-2003, 03:24 AM Been with AlwaysWebHosting for 7+ months. Been solid so far.
greathope 01-14-2003, 09:56 AM what i can say is that most of old hosting company are lazy in designing their homepages, and very high price.
but they offer low price to thier old custommers.
i like new hosing company, they often give me new look and festures.
tsutton 01-14-2003, 01:44 PM 2 years and 2 months with TheNexus - http://www.thenexus.co.uk using the Platinum Account package.
Very good service, customer services!

Thorlongus 01-20-2003, 12:44 AM 4 Years with Pair.com - had used 6 hosts in the previous 2 years who shall remain nameless. :D Have 4 domains hosted with them for $32/mo - Nice bandwidth too. I get a full T1 download speed from them on my T3 connection at home.
neorder 03-06-2003, 06:16 AM i've been doing research for a few months, i have seen many many web hosting companys' sites.
olm is loaded very fast here, even verio.com can't be loaded that fast. the only site i have encounted that load faster than olm.com is our local host service provider's site.
i am from singapore. olm is in US or Canada i am not sure.
i may go for reseller with them, the only thing i don't like them is they use sphere which i have no experience at all.
any reseller with them? are they ok?
Eric Lim 03-06-2003, 06:24 AM I was with phpwebhosting for three years, 7 months ago
then now with myself
vmdg_nyc 03-06-2003, 10:52 AM I was with Starweb Pro Host (www.starweb.com) for about 2 years. They were great. I experienced very little downtime, decent service, and speedy servers. I grew out of them as my company grew and my client base expanded. I tried their reseller plan, but it needs improvement, plus they are primarily windows based, which my clients weren't too happy about. I started getting more clients faster, and every time i wanted to setup a hosting account for them I had to contact Starweb to do it for me. They didn't use WebHostManager, which greatly limited the amount of control I had over my reseller accounts. As I got busier, I just decided to find a new host that could accomodate my needs. But for single-site, windows-based servers, I would recommend them to anyone. Unfortunately I haven't found a hosting company that could match their flexible service, support, and uptime.
I have put a few of my smaller clients on PowWeb (www.powweb.com) and I have never received a complaint from any of them, nor have I ever noticed any downtime from them. PowWeb's backend User Interface is great, and extremely thorough. I usually recommend them to people who ask me about very inexpensive and reliable web hosts. I just wish they had a reseller plan.
I spent about 3.5 weeks on a really cheap reseller account with a 'fly by nite' hosting company. They went by the name of ****** (www.******.net). After about 2 weeks, they left me in the dark on a really slow server, and really had some of my clients breathing down my neck. Luckily I was able to get a refund via Paysystems.com, but I guess you get what you pay for.
At the present moment, I'm with ********* (www.*********.com) which offers great plans and OK service, but inconsistent uptime as I notice that every 2 weeks or so, their equipment seems to 'hiccup' and goes down for a few hours.
I'm currently researching and working on securing a new hosting plan with a more reliable company.
Green_Leader 03-07-2003, 03:32 AM I consider that I have been with the same host for about 7 years, although VServers was bought by HostPro who were then bought by Interland. However, my days with Interland are numbered. My server has been down now for almost 6 hours with no end in sight. :( However, I was on my way out already -- I just wish I had done it before today.
hekwu 03-07-2003, 08:29 PM 10 months with GearHost.com. It has been kinda bumpy, but they do provide good support at times. They are still growing the windows servers pushing the limits.... Plus, I have so many domains that moving is not an option at this point. They allow 15 domains for $23.00 per month.
Smoothest hosting was with Site5.com ... 5 or 6 months of solid hosting. Had 1 problem that caused my site to down for about 2 or 3 hours within that time frame... pretty good (when compared to similar windows host... if you can call similar.

maxhest 03-10-2003, 08:11 PM MM Speedgamers.com 7 mnts.. (first "paid" hosting" still with them.. :)
jbishop 03-10-2003, 08:44 PM I notice quite a few posts throughout this thread where people moved on to new hosts after 'outgrowing' their previous ones.
Would everyone mind elaborating on how you outgrew them? I.e., were they not willing to offer a plan with an above-normal amount of transfer, or was it something more unfortunate like your site overloading the server they had you on?
This seems like an unusually common occurence.
Tropical Tundra 03-11-2003, 01:49 AM I was with hostme.com for 2 years but their plans were to expensive for the amount of BW and disk space they provided (20 bucks for 200MB and 2 or 3 gigs of BW I can't remember now--it's been over 2years now). Their uptime and support was excellent though.

Netfirms was good for the free service. Now they seem to regret their free service and do everything to get you to upgrade. While yes they have a right to change their business model, IMHO they didn't just do that, they are sleazy.

Been with them (Vserver/HostPro/Interland) for 4 years. Never really had any major problem with them. Just moved this month for 2 reasons:
1. Price for the package (Vserver Pro) is too high compared to new market standards.
2. Interland stopped "official" support for Vserver packages, i.e. no more upgrades so i'm stuck with old versions of php, imp, etc.
Really can't understand why they didn't develop further the Vserver line. The power it gives to the user/client is unbeatable (only real root access beats it, imo). The control panel, even though dated, is still miles ahead of CPs like Cpanel, Plesk, etc.
dapon 04-25-2003, 03:09 PM I have had one account with Verio since 1/1998 and one with 1STCOMWEBHOSTING.COM for 1 yr 4mnths. Those are my longest two.
ootorirei 04-26-2003, 12:18 AM Been with Hostrocket - 1 year. I left because they don't have smaller plans that suited my need, they grew too fast.
Have had one website hosted through ExtremeZone (local company) for over 7 years.
Other sites hosted on FeaturePrice for roughly 1 and a half years.
Now hosting sites with ServerSonic for about 4 months now.
hula2hoop 04-26-2003, 05:01 AM Hi,
Don't use Wazoo.
I actually got it from CNET"s recommended host.
Don't almost every other day.
Why can't they turn up the juice...we're paying the bill!
Haven't had one ticket that answered aside from the automated response. Worst off is that they closed it.
Horrible support and sales staff...
I had a request sent it as they have been closing my tickets.
Someone from Sales called Michael Pillow answered.
He just said that he's not from Support and therefore he can't help. I relied asking him forward it to support and I guess he didn't. It's been 3 weeks, and close to a dozen tickets and emails(I stop sending) and not one comprehendable or human generate reply.
Stay away...far far away.
acranox 04-26-2003, 12:21 PM One year.
first and only host I've had, http://www.eicomm.net
cheap price, good stuff, no downtime, quick support repsonses
I'm looking to switch only because I wan't a few features the basic account doesn't have (CGI, MySQL.....) and to get that would be more than I want to spend...I'm using this thread as another research tool...I've yet to find a host with comparable stats for the plan that isn't a reportedly unreliable host.

I am glad I am not the only one having probs with wazoo. They suck! I used to be happy with them, but since they were acquired by Interland their support has been the worst. I keep getting emails saying my account is going to be deactivated for non-payment even though they are supposed to bill my cc. Anyhow no one answers support tickets so everyone stay away!!!!!
Nitin 05-08-2003, 09:12 AM 5years and 5 months.
Then I shifted to ************.
Happy.
SumBodyElze 05-15-2003, 01:49 PM I left Interland when their service and support went down the toilet.
Been with Hosting Matters (hostingmatters.com) for about 2 years now. Excellent service and support from people who really know what they're doing and care about their customers. Even as their business grows, they continue to stay on top of things. What a refreshing change! No plans to leave them anytime soon. :)
liquidfire 05-15-2003, 02:13 PM The host I've probably been with the most is actually a semi-exclusive one, for roleplaying sites - www.mortality.net Been there since before I can remember ;)
My site there is http://crpgn.mortality.net (though the server is currently down for scheduled maintenence)
zer0s 05-15-2003, 02:29 PM I'm now with eniki.net
For 1 month I think, yes it's short, but for me the longest :) There server haven't been down and there service is great!
SHGLLC 05-29-2003, 11:55 PM I was with Communitech since 1997. However, they just sold out to Interland - more downtime in 1 month with interland that previous 5 years with CT.......
Communitech was a great host! Jury still out on Interland!
MrAlien 05-30-2003, 01:00 AM Was with cad-tech for a long time (1998) but they went out of business then byzhosting since 2001.
lisadragon 05-30-2003, 06:59 AM first paid hosting: RCTHost.com since October 2002 (7months), though having problems lately with downtime and server 1 being overloaded.
bizness 06-01-2003, 07:15 AM 4 years with dialtone COLO... just recently moved out. well they kicked me out because interland decided to move all the servers to the new dialtone forgetting they had 100 or so colo clients... so they decided to kick them out also.... but wait.... more then 50% of them didnt even get a 25day warning... and some called regarding the rumors and some of the agents at interland lied and said "no sir, your servers WILL be moving to the new facility".... later, they agreed that they lied because they didnt want to be the one to tell that customer..... in my case, i was upset because my 2 partners and I all worked at Dialtone before the buyout as level 2 techs and this is how they treat us... no warning nothing.... Dialtone WAS the best, now since interland has bought them out, they have been going down hill ..... for a simple reboot, it took 5hours... finally i decided to take the 40mile trip up to the datacenter..... the idiot (*^(*^*&^%&^$0)(*&(* NOC guy tells me on the phone.... "SIR, it boots into the windows 2000 server startup but doesnt go anyfurther..... i have rebooted this machine 20 times SIR... in the first few times SIR, it booted fine" ..... just as a little sidenote I AM ON $#@$@%# REDHAT.... so the NOC not only was rebooting the wrong server for 5 hours, he broke the windows 2000 kernel.....
ochiba 06-01-2003, 01:07 PM ADDR: almost 2 years - left them cuz I moved to Japan and couldn't pay them with my bank debit card anymore. Would still be with them today if I could.
voxtreme: 1 year 5/6 months (can't remember >.<) Ask me again in 2006, so I can feel like a more loyal customer *^_^*
zylink: almost 1 year -left them cuz Netacore.Com offered a sweeter deal. Still feel kinda guilty for that >_< I've been thinking about resigning up with them and buying a smaller account even though I'd probably only use it for one email address ^^;;
ttremeth 06-01-2003, 10:45 PM 6 months. Was with Valcato and although they had some great staff they had too much down time to handle. Heard they have sorted the offending server out but many of their issues came from Nocster/Burst.
Wulex 06-01-2003, 10:59 PM I was with a company of which I do not remember their name...
but i was with the company until my dad's CC expired and he refused to put in a new one :[
it was a few years...2 or 3 i don't quite remember
easypooltutor 06-23-2003, 09:02 PM More than a year with Ventures Online... outgrew their plans.

Yahoo
Reliability = v.good
Helpdesk = hmmm, fast, but not very sophisticated
Features = poor (in todays environ to not offer MySQL/php is pretty crappy)
Value = fair ($15/mo for reliability, I'll pay, but so few features...)
Overall = good first taste host = 6.5/10
Free: GeoCities, since 1999, three web sites. One is paid now - min. required to get ads off.
Paid: Dot5Hosting, since Oct. 2002. Got moved to a new server earlier this year and have no major problems.
My first pay host went kaput in great fashion. I won't mention them, because they've been posted about too much already and everyone is tired of seeing their name.
[edit: actually, if a free host goes to pay, I guess Homestead would count as my longest paid host so far - 1 year]
kimrari 06-25-2003, 01:21 AM verio for 2 years.
they are the best webhost in the world but their prices are high. i waqs paying 245 dollars for a vps with 1.2 gigs of disk space. they have since added a new type of vps so now u get about 5 gigs, but it was to little to late.
high quality though and 24/7 technical support u can call up at 3 in the morning!
