View Full Version : Which extension should I use - .com or .co.uk ?
hellows 09-08-2008, 09:22 AM Which domain name extension should I use?
I am designing a new web page with news, forum, chat, gallery etc. This is for the British and MAYBE in the future I will expand the website to include USA, Poland, Germany, Holland and some other countries.
I have checked the Domain Name and it is available with .com, .net and .co.uk (co.uk is used in UK) and other endings are also available.
Which extension should I use? Here, I am a bit worried about the search engine indexing.
Thanks
I suggest you to get the .com as the default extension and point the .co.uk to the .com.
I would personally use the .com as the primary as well as purchase the others to use as redirects/parked.
mbulent 09-08-2008, 11:04 AM If your market is co.uk, go for co.uk
Make sure you have the .com as well and com is directed to co.uk to get location points from google being in UK;
Keep a budget and register every extension possible starting with .com, then .co.uk, then .net and then whatever you want like .net.uk etc.
hellows 09-08-2008, 11:52 AM I will buy most of them but my problem is which one should I use as the primary extension?
As the link is search angene will have this extension.
(AHA AND MAYBE I will use the extension as part of the business name.)
thanks
Dario123 09-08-2008, 12:09 PM get both......
Lubeca 09-08-2008, 12:10 PM If you are UK-based and your primary market is the UK then go for .co.uk
Talking as a UK resident I think this is a complete no-brainer. There is a general assumption with the man in the street that UK-based web sites use .uk domains.

How about you make it easy on yourself and use BOTH as primary? I dont see any problem with that especially with Virtual hosts.
And the search engines should not see any difference since you have both .com and .co.uk. So for example google.co.uk should index the .co.uk version and google.com should index the .com version. May be I am not right on this one since I am not a SEO expert.
txtRegistrar 09-08-2008, 01:25 PM co.uk for British market, however secure .com just incase it grows

Thanks but this is not how the SEO works. I would have to use noindex function for one of the urls and there is the issue of double content.
hellows 09-09-2008, 05:43 AM Just to make it more complicated. This will be a website in polish language for polish people in UK :>.

Well thats not really an issue :) But the more you get, the more you have pointing back to your .UK :)

ElTino 09-09-2008, 09:15 AM get the .com domain and build the main site then get the .de .us and so on and redirect the to pint to the .com one
netearth 09-09-2008, 11:09 AM I assume this has nothing to do with the competitors domain you have got then?

:> No, this is something else.
Dave Parish 09-09-2008, 11:31 AM you might want to get both http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=721326
you definately don't want to be the competitor in that situation

pretty much the same thing applies though, you don't want the same thing happening to you do you?
hellows 09-09-2008, 11:42 AM Hivelocity Q&A.
Thank. I will definitely buy all of them. Just I do not know which one should I use as the primary domain name? .com or .co.uk.
PS: And yes this has happened to me before. Now they want £xxx for one domain. But more on this is in my other topic.
