Hi again,
Just weighing the pros and cons.
Is it better to leave it public? I have my po box listed as my address. My phone is listed though. Should it be made private or public for people to contact me regarding any hosting I may offer?
A secondary question is that I just finished creating vanity nameserver names for this url - will privacy protecting it hide the name of the nameservers too?
thanks much

If you’re intending to run any form of business from the URL your best to not use privacy protection, looks more professional.

To my knowledge no privacy protection service will hide the nameservers your domain is pointed to. Is there a particular reason why you want your nameservers to be private?

As a brand new hosting company,
I opted to keep my domain registration private.
An action that hasn't had adverse effects thus far.
I would not expect a large business, i.e. Google or Amazon, to have privacy protection.

Rothie, I would leave your PO box as the address.
Your telephone number will be on your site anyway will it not? If youre that worried about the tel number, do put one but have it going to a voicemail to email service, you get the call, but can then just delete the chaff *sales calls selling you double glazing etc*.
At least your punters if they decide to "check you out" before giving over their hard cash will be able to see the PO box.
Also if you are using PayPal/MB etc, make sure all your address and phone numbers are the same, less confusion that way.
Chris
I don't like using the "Privacy" stuff given by the registrars because I cant customize it to my liking.
On the other hand I use PO BOX and OneBox.com Voicemail/FAX because I dont want to be stalked, LOL, seriously.
But honestly, it whatever you choose it to be. All you need to make sure that the information is accurate and you get the message is someone does try to relay a message using this whois infomation. Cause sometimes if ICANN or your registrar tries to contact you using the whois info and they get a message "This number is no longer available/disconnected" they might disconnect your domain for incorrect whois.

If it's for a business, I wouldn't use private registration. If it's for personal use... I would.
PO Box isn't bad. I would however consider getting a GrandCentral.com (Google) phone number and use that for your domain registration. That way your real phone number isn't listed.
For personal use, I'd actually consider private registration slightly superior to a PO Box since your PO Box will likely be in the same town. There's no such thing as being truly "unlisted" so anyone with the zip code and your name has a good start with finding the info... just a little more work.
As for vanity nameservers, that's purely comedic as the name implies. You obviously can't hide them, they are publicly known to anyone who queries for them. Vanity nameservers also typically are just an alias. A little effort running 'dig' and you can normally find out who the real host is (though many hosts use 'anonymous domains' to make it more difficult).
