I know there are many companies out there with payment systems for taking credit card orders, like 2checkout and paypal. Which one(s) would anyone recommend, in terms of being reliable and offering decent service? Cost is also, obviously, an issue, but I am willing to pay more for a reliable, service-oriented company.

Suggestions, comments, etc?

I don't have any personal experience with the third party services processors - but i would suggest that you use the link i gave you and do a search on WHT for comments on the processers that are listed. Chances are you will come up with a couple of choice that meet your needs.

I've used PayPal for some 3 years now (at least I think it's been three years, I lost track a while back). While they charge (everyone does nowadays) for transfers, I've personally found them to be the most reasonable and supportive service out there. Not only do I use them as a business solution, but also as a personal solution, for e-bay auctions and the like.

More and more people are starting to recognize PayPal. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe not, but it definitely doesn't hurt.

I have been using Revecom.com (PaySystems) for a few weeks now and have been very happy with their service and support. They offer support via a Ticket System, Live Chat and Phone Support. You also have access to a feature packed control panel where you can manage customers etc. I haven’t had any real problems with them.

Hey, mind if I ask why you are not liking 2CheckOut.com? I've been a customer of their for about a month now and although their cut the charge is a tad pricey I think the service has been quite good. Did you have a bad experience with them?

Clickbank charges less and is reliable payment system, but only if you have a product which is transferable on net. Otherwise, check for ibill.

If you are willing to pay more for a reliable company then why don't you just get a real merchant account. You will pay around $10/month statement fee....$10/month real time gateway fee plus a set up fee of around $100 and up....and your minimum billing will usually be $25.

Your per charge pricing will be much lower...more like 2.25% per transaction plus $.25-$.30. Basically when you are charging enough to bring you $45/month in transaction fees through one of these higher priced third party solutions, it's time to get a real merchant account.

As for recommending one specific third party solution, I have never used any but Pay Pal (not for business) and I do not recommend them. This is due to a really bad experience I had with them not enforcing their fraud guarantee and helping someone steal $250 from me.

Yes, I will be offering intangbiles like hosting and web development. However, I am looking for a third party solution to start off with to see how it goes. If business grows, yes I would consider getting a merchant account.
