What happens if a client starts using that space for storing tons of data, say about 100GB? huckyboy 09-05-2008, 05:59 PM when a hosting company offers that much space for less money, always read their Terms of Service or Acceptable Use Policy. chances are they would not even allow a fraction of that advertised space to be used by their clients. :) qualityhosts 09-05-2008, 08:01 PM they would throw the client out because they were using too much "server resources" lol TheSimpleHost-Nathan 09-05-2008, 08:47 PM They have loopholes such as using the space to store small files only such as php/asp/html files. Another is not being able to use the account to backup data. All in all, if a host offeres 1tb of anything, unless you're paying > $50-100 a month then you probably wont be able to use it DATARTIM 09-05-2008, 08:49 PM Some may get away with it if they are able to do it without using too much cpu or other resources. But most would soon find their accounts suspended for cpu usage or some such reason. Its just not financially viable to offer tb's of disk space or bandwidth for just a couple of bucks a month. Rageki-John 09-06-2008, 12:29 AM A client wouldn't be able to consume that much diskspace or bandwidth because the host would've already suspended them and say that they were using too many "server resources". kb241 09-06-2008, 01:36 AM Yeah..what i've seen is that they give you all this so called "space", but they throw the "CPU EXCEEDED" error at you! It's the new gimmick! bushu9 09-06-2008, 04:08 AM thank you all very much. i now understand the game. the guys are working on probability. i had wondered where someone would take 300GB from to sell for $50 a year. and i have begun asking a lot of other questions too.... mrzippy 09-06-2008, 10:06 AM Yes, it's nothing more then unethical marketing tactics. It's barely one step removed from advertising "unlimited" bandwidth or diskspace.. which obviously does not exist since nobody has invented an "unlimited" disk drive or network yet... It's barely one step removed from advertising "unlimited" bandwidth or diskspace.. which obviously does not exist since nobody has invented an "unlimited" disk drive or network yet... Well, some hosts can get you closer to "unlimited" than others. But there is no host that can offer you unlimited anything. njoker555 09-06-2008, 10:34 AM these guys are just overselling, no one will have a web site that takes up a full terabyte of space, doubt anyone has one taking up a 100gb of space in all lol these guys that offer these high space usage are the ones that know the resources will never be used, they only pay for what's being used, its smart marketing, they can charge more for space the client will never use - not smart on client side but if the host can actually back it all up then there is no problem hard drives are getting cheaper and cheaper these days, i wouldn't be surprised if a host had just one server with 10 tb of space in it, host hundreds to thousands of websites, assuming they have the RAM and internet power to. MikeDVB 09-06-2008, 04:16 PM But there is no host that can offer you unlimited anything. They can offer it, they just can't provide it :) Personally I'd not choose a reseller plan that had unlimited or unmetered disk space or bandwidth - it's good to know what your limits are when it comes to reselling. JohnJ 09-06-2008, 07:36 PM They can offer it, they just can't provide it :) Personally I'd not choose a reseller plan that had unlimited or unmetered disk space or bandwidth - it's good to know what your limits are when it comes to reselling. Eh, same difference. :P Evolver 09-06-2008, 08:51 PM Those companies unethically lure users into a service that has shill features, mostly bandwidth and space allotments. Some of those companies offer such ridiculous bandwidth/space allotments that there is no way for a user to be able to use up what they paid for. Why, because if one account were to try it they would bring the server down to its knees but this is where the fine print comes into play and that users is then suspended. Now people will say but, but everyone oversells, well its true but there is overselling where system and user management results in users not being suspended after using 1% of what they were sold on and then there is unethical business practices/advertising. It still boggles the mind how some of these massive oversellers can get away with it. In any other non web hosting related business if someone offered what some host offer they would be sued for false advertising. ultrahoster 09-19-2008, 01:51 PM There's always a policy issue. Annoying really! Hannan 09-19-2008, 09:07 PM They are just liar! PEAK-Bobby 09-19-2008, 11:19 PM Before purchasing from a company that offers UNLIMITED anything, ask them to PROVE IT!!! It's all a spoof to get the uneducated customers that want the high number for the lowest cost. You get what you pay for is the final word, I've moved over so many customers that came from companies that promised unlimited space but... than cancels your account after you try using your space that you paid for. It's a shame, but hey keep it up and we'll keep on taking your customers from you! DigitalLinx 09-20-2008, 09:13 AM 1TB Ethernet RAID disk is around $250 if you know where to get them, so if I was to offer a customer 1TB space at $5 a month it will take 4 years just to cover the expense for the drive so it will literary take 10 years to see minimal profits from that customer. |
