I have just received a colocation promotion from cogent. Does anyone has any experience colo in cogent data centres directly?
Care to share or comment?

How do you mean cogent data centers?
Data Center quality has nothing to do with the type of connections they offer in my opinion.

I feel that most "cogent" relates issues are often "data center" issues. Example: They are selling cogent so cheap and in bulk making next to nothing so they choose to or have no choice to provide sorry support.

Colocation centers differ in many ways, but not because of the connections they offer,, one center can offer cogent and be excellent, when one could offer vero and suck, has nothing to do with the connection if the staffing of the center is sorry, etc.

I hope that helps,

Hmmm,,,
Did you mean colocation directly from cogent?!!?!

My answer was based on the fact that you where talking about colocating with a facility that had cogent lines installed.

If your talking about colocating with cogent directly, then i didnt even know they did thatt...... i would like to see the pricing though, $2 per U, unlimited bandwidth..lol

Cogent claims not to do this, i'd contacted my sales rep about a month back on this issue as someone i was talking to was apparently quoted from a sales rep who was going to provide them with rackspace, etc.

My rep asked for the other reps name and claimed they did not do this, and that the other rep was trying to make some extra $$$ or something of that nature and indicated his intend of reporting this.

Cogent doesn't directly sell colocation. They acquired PSI.net which still offers some colocation services, but I believe most of these customers are then just brought to Switch and Data who's apparently partnered with Cogent to offer some cheap colocation and bandwidth bundles.

Yeah. It is more like psi.net/cogent thing. Basically you get 100mbps, free rackspace, 2x20amp power, 99.99% reliability for $3000. I think that is as cheap as you can get, consider free rackspace would cost $500-1000 in any data centre.

i've tried to push cogent to get 10mbps links from my local rep before for other purposes (seperate clients, etc. who i didn't want directly on our network), they were extremely uncooperative in even considering it, even when offered 1/2 the $$$ of the full 100mbps.

This new Cogent colo deal is based on their acquisition of PSI.net. It is offered in 3 PSI.net data centers and just like with Cogent's bandwidth, is only available in 100M chunks.

The deal is a rack and 100M of Cogent for $3,000 and there are no alternatives. If you are ready to use near the 100M, then this is an awesome deal.

wasn't it wholesalebandwidth that was flooding the forums with spam about a month back, or was it a similar yet different company? If not, my eyes are playing tricks :).

No, WholesaleBandwidth has never spammed this forum or any other. You probably recognize WholesaleBandwidth because of its past ties to WholesaleColo. WholesaleBandwidth took over the network that WholesaleColo was using and facilitated customer transfers to new hosting/colo providers.

I've made less then a dozen posts to WHT and have only recently become active. If you have any issues or concerns about WholesaleBandwidth or our activities, please address them to me directly so that I can get them resolved.

The Cogent colo in KC in in the switch and data center on Grand downtown. It's across the street from the building in which the main Cogent NOC is located.

The deal is they charge you $3000 a month for a 100mb line and then give you a cage for free. (there's also a $3500 setup fee is I remember right)

Aaron, what size of cage?

And Shaun, i obviously have you guys mixed up with someone else, it was another wholesale bandwidth like operation, they had a really cheezy 5 page or so webpage, and listed competitive prices and said they could get great quotes from certain companies, etc. but they spammed a lot which lead to myself personally avoided them, the name was relatively similar, but obviously not the same.

porcupine,

Not sure. I'm not co-lo'd with them. My office/datacenter is two floors above the main NOC on the other side of the street. I think someone told me it was a 10'x10' or maybe a 5'x5', again, not sure.

if you get a 100sqft area and 100mbps for $3k/mo thats plain insanity! :D is the place carrier neutral though?

That's Cogent only. And again, I'm not sure of the space.
