I have questions about the copyright rules regarding:

- FreeBSD
- Apache httpd
- Mysql server
- PHP
- SSL - Secure socket layer (mod_ssl)
- ProFTPD

If I offer a shared server with the above what do I have to include in order to not infringe the copyright for this "Opensource" software?

I see a lot of webservice providers using the above without any disclaimers, do I need to put any on my homepage ?

In general, open source software developers *want* you to show off the fact that you use their software and have created logos just for that purpose.

The biggest caveat is that you do not represent that you are a representative of those developers or their software...

ie. For Apache - http://httpd.apache.org/docs/misc/FAQ.html#logo

For MySQL - http://www.mysql.com/documentation/mysql/full/manual.html#MySQL_AB_Logos_and_Trademarks

I've heard that when it comes to apache and mysql that you dont have to put the logos on the page due to security risks involved when showing what you use (I know you can find anyway, so please dont tlell me I'm lame, it's not what I use for security!!) but it's what I've heard, can anyone confirm? deny?

well if someone is going to hack your server once they traceroute you they know what the server is running on so it really doesn't matter...

As far as I know, you don't have to recognize your use of the above software in any way.

The latest Netcraft Web Server poll shows that most of the Internet runs Apache. Most are targets from mass attacks on netblocks of IP addresses, and not a random www.my-big-hosting-provider.com attack. So, what you're saying about the logos is not the case. If you fear what you use, what's the point of being online?

I don't recall anything in the GPL about putting logos on websites...

Just to clarify - I meant *want* as in *desire* - not as a requirement. :-)

I DID NOT SAY THAT I WAS
1 afraid of using the software (it's the best out there!)
2 I was only interested in my legal obligations as a host to
the software creators.
