View Full Version : Private domains... not so private

I know this has be discussed in various flavors here and otherwise, but wanted to share my experience with NameCheap and Google. I had two domains I needed to register, both of them privately.

The first one I registered with Google for $10 being promised whois privacy. Of course right after I register, whois is showing all my details in their full glory. Got it fixed with their support within 48 hours (not bad for Google who does a lot to make it very difficult to contact them.)

Then I went to namecheap having seen good feedback on them on wht. I confirmed through their chat if I am going to get privacy with *.us, check. I made sure my shopping cart had WhoisGuard, check. I registered. How follish of me not to dig deeper into it and find out that .us prohibits private registration, so again my details are showing in full glory. Name cheap really should make a point of telling you in the shopping cart that WhoisGuard you are getting for free is not for the domain your registering and will be useless any way. This is what they are showing now:

WHOISGUARD Free With *****.us.-Promotion

Very sneaky of them!

What do people do to comply with ICANN/TLD rules and not be completly exposed? Newbie question, I know.

Uh oh. Looks like one other time NameCheap didn't come through.

(By one other time, I meant no company's immune to not making mistakes. But some are ready to take responsibility for them.)

Chances are they overlooked this one. Do bring it to their attention right away.

Looks like they put the wrong promo up. You can't WHOIS Protect .us domains, for future reference. You might be better setting up a P.O. Box maybe.

All the best,

Hello, yes, this was definitely a mistake on our support reps part as the .us registry does in fact prohibit privacy to be used on .us domains. If you PM me with a ticket ID we can offer you a full refund on the domains you registered and have them deleted asap if you so wish. I do apologize for the error and the inconvenience this has caused you.
