I just tried to order one of these servers from HostDime. Coupon code entered; order placed; PayPal debited; happy days.

Or so i thought.

About an hour later I received the following email:

"Hello Client Name,

You recently purchased a dedicated server on our website, thank you for your order. Unfortunately, we have not received the PayPal authorization form. If you have sent it please let us know, here is the form again in case you need it.

We will need this form filled out and scanned or emailed to dedi.scan@hostdime.com in order to full fill your order."

I took one look at the form - which requires a copy of my "government issued photo ID" - double checked the order form and HostDime's TOS pages and replied as follows:

"You have not received a PayPal authorisation form because no such form was requested from me. No mention was made of this requirement on the order form, nor do I see it mentioned in your Terms Of Service. Please advise.

Incidentally, I am at a loss to understand how my providing you with potentially enough information and documentation to compromise my Paypal account constitutes “protecting the user” from internet fraud."

It appears the same requirement exists for credit card orders. I've never come across this before - is standard practice in the hosting business?

I apologize for the inconveniences, it is very common with bigger organizations to protect the company and the funds coming from the client or individual. I am sure you can appreciate us checking before taking funds which maybe not from the owner. This is required only one time and once on file it will never be asked again. If you are concerned with some things on your ID you are free to black them out. We understand your concern and appreciate your cooperation.

In credit card the funds are only captured and not settled if it is via paypal we simply refund it if we can't verify it, so while it seems it is already taken it really is not until verified.

This is irrelevant anyway - the point is that this ridiculous requirement is not mentioned during the order process. As i said already - it's only $1.45, but it's gone from my account nonetheless, without any (unrequested) form being sent to you.

We have our paypal account for close to 9 years as well, we understand your concerns and apologize for the inconvenience. I advised of some ways to make it more comfortable for you in my previous post. It is more common then you think, ask around you will see this is the case. Regardless even if it isn't common this is still our company policy which we have to follow. Please work via the ticket as this is something which needs to be dealt via that avenue or call 407.756.1126

I was a little hesitant on the whole paypal validation thing but from the service so far ...i dont mind at all its worth it for the price and the service.

Please post when this coupon code will be valid through. And to pjjb, im assuming that as a PayPal account holder of 7 years you know that these types of transactions are not covered at all by PayPal and also that any "credit card" transaction is NOT considered a verifiable transaction to them. If you reference your PayPal risk-controls handbook, you will see that even if a persons PayPal account is verified, Credit Card transactions always go through as "unverified" transactions. HostDimes policy is very liberal since they are opting to allow some information to be blacked out, others won't allow as much. Our company verify's almost every order by telephone, even domain orders, since any fraud that's reduced will always reduce the cost for the consumer, especially when HostDime is giving away products for nothing.

I scammer most of the time won't take the time to do all this, most scammers won't take the time of their day to do all this work for something. There maybe some, however if we weed out 95% of them we are more content then not doing anything at all. We are only trying to do our part of trying to help minimize fraud on the internet. We do actually care about who goes on our network for the sake of everyone. I apologize this is such a great inconvenience I understand your concern. If you can at least sign the form and let us voice verify your order we will process it. We don't mean to put such a hassle on this process. My original concerns over their photo ID requirement (which they addressed) aside, I haven't had any problems with them since I signed up. They've been most helpful.
