Greetings,

Im in the midst of starting a small project in which I'm gathering educational resources for people who wanted to start their own hosting company without the headaches .

Long story short, I'm collecting a list of any possible resources that would "educate" a beginner host in becoming proficient in the day to day functioning of a hosting company (the technical side)

So if there's anyone out there that can offer their help in terms of replying back with any sources (BOOKS/Websites/Online Tutorials/Videos/etc) about topics regarding:

Server administration
Operating popular webhosting software
Linux (and other OS's)
SSHThink of it being something similar to "Webhosting for Dummies"

I know there's tons of things that may be part of running a hosting business, but I'm trying to get a head start.

It may take me awhile, but if anyone wants to reply with a source/reference. Let me know :)

I thank you for your time!

Although I admire your ingenuity, the way im looking at it is this.

Why would one web host offer help to the competition for free? However he would offer it for a price.

Im sure you plan on selling this material, have it be on ebay and whatnot.

With that said, books are written from experience. Nobody is an expert at it, as there is something they can always be better at. Have it be marketing, SEO, customer support, etc.

I suggest writing it with your experiences in mind, pointing out your mistakes(if any), and how to avoid them. Why were they mistakes? How could it of benefited you if you went another route. etc, etc etc.

Good luck with your book/document.

Hi Gixxer,

Actually, I didn't plan on selling this book/document at all.
More or less, yes it would be somewhat benefiting the "competition" but at the same time, its just helping out the "community"

Even experts from time to time need "resources" so it was just a community project collecting resources that dealt with server administration, flavors of linux, tutorials, helpdesk software, etc.

So as mentioned above, it'd be something like 'Webhosting for dummies"

Any links/names/references/resources would be of great help :)

I reckon that although this is a helpful community, when most of us have spent years learning the hard way (by our selves), it may just be better to state your problems in the other forums when you need the help. If you need a "Webhosting for dummies" guide, it's probably not best to start your own business (though I know you said you're just doing it as a project)

and the last thing you want to do is make it easier for a 14year old kid to start a hosting business

So basically you want established hosts to help foster the competition?? As if there were not enough kiddie hosts in the market already !

Maybe its part of some big master plan to take over the world of hosting (i really wanted a suspicious looking smiley here but wht dont have one)

What may be more fair is if there's a members only portal, although it would probably just turn into a more 'organised' help forum. The kiddies could be turned away by requiring a payment, or users need to supply a history or what they've done/doing

I see the idea, something like this might grow the reseller community.

Maybe if you sold this to us as a reseller guide we would be more accepting?

I bet ya he wants it for link bait for his site to attract customers. Nothing wrong with that, but you need to do the leg work yourself or pay someone to do it.

This site is probably one of the better sites for beginners when it comes to the web hosting technical topics.

I sure hope we dont see that ripped content from these sites down the road.
