OllieVH 09-04-2002, 12:30 AM We currently operate 5 servers that we physically own and co-locate at a regional data center. Choosing a host with two servers is fine as long as certain aspects are reviewed. 1. What kind of server is it, what OS, Processor Speed, RAM, HD, Control Panel, etc, etc... 2. How many clients does this web host have and do the math. If they say they have 2000 clients and only two servers, well that is a lot of people on two servers. I'm not saying there will be problems, i'm just saying that is on the higher end of full :) 3. What kind of uptime guarantee do they offer and is it just eye candy or do they really strive to meet it. There are tons of other things that you can do to make sure that the host you pick is the right one for you. www.datacenterwire.com has some good guides in helping. Deb 09-04-2002, 12:34 AM We have 18 Community Servers in production, about 50 servers spinning live all together (yes Sir Aussie Bob more than 20 in that bare DC :stickout ) I whole heartedly agree with OllieVH's response. 2 should be fine, it's not the number of servers that counts... ;) cornnuts 09-04-2002, 12:37 AM hmm... thanks 2Grumpy 09-04-2002, 03:38 AM I'd say it's safe to say, we all had only 2 servers at some point, for those with more than that now. mlovick 09-04-2002, 04:44 AM We started with One server (an original Cobalt Raq1 Simply called a cobalt raq) ;) We now have 26 bruce1234at 09-04-2002, 05:18 AM it's not the number of servers a host has, but the service, uptime etc.. they provide that counts :D floppy 09-04-2002, 07:58 AM You can go ahead with 2 servers. Gradually you can increase as the traffic grows. You should give good service, that is the need of the time. mlovick 09-04-2002, 08:03 AM Originally posted by bruce1234at it's not the number of servers a host has, but the service, uptime etc.. they provide that counts :D :D Yup - anything above 10% uptime is gr8 :D universal2001 09-04-2002, 08:58 AM yep I got 1.5 servers. Its totally okay to go with these providers as well. 2Grumpy 09-04-2002, 09:07 AM To be honest, it's a lot easier to provide good uptime on 1 server than 100 :) with only 1 or 2 servers you can dedicate so much effort to them. edude 09-04-2002, 09:10 AM mlovick is from Bangladesh thats why 10% uptime is gr8 for him :D Aussie Bob 09-04-2002, 09:31 AM Originally posted by Deb We have 18 Community Servers in production, about 50 servers spinning live all together (yes Sir Aussie Bob more than 20 in that bare DC :stickout ) <hands on hips> Weeeeeeeellllllll, if there was a better camera in that server room, maybe we'd see 'em all. :D |
