so what do i need for say 250 to 300 listeners at 128kps or aac..

compatible for all players

i have bean doing some homework .. and came up with i would need what 3tb bandwidth with a 100Mbps connection and so on and so on ..

so need to find the best solution's and good price .. for what i want ..and if it could support a dual player .. that is great ..hope i did not confuse everybody .. because i am trying to get all this ...lol

For 300 simultaneous listeners, at 128kbps each, you will actually use ~40mbps.

300 x 128kbps = 38400kbps, or 38.4Mbps. We round it to 40Mbps since overhead of the codec was not taken into account.
40Mbps = 5MB/s (bits / 8 = bytes)
3TB / 5MB/s = 600000 seconds = ~167 hours per month, or ~5.57 hours per day. Is that enough for you?

If so, look for a decent dedicated server with a 100mbps connection and you'll be good to go!

Depending on were you are located, you might want to check www.iweb.com, they have decent prices, and pretty servers ;)

Hope this help!

thanks AntX for the break down ..well hmmm i was looking at more at say 7 or 8 hours ..and instead of having auto dj i was going to have the shows put on my site .. so people who missed the shows can pick what show they missed .. only for listening not uploading or downloading ..so i guess m3u format ..

so how much do you actually save using aac compared to mp3 .. i mean just getting all the angles covered ..

well i just want a good server .. but a lot of the plans do not offer the bandwidth i need , that i can see ...

8 hours per day ... this sums up to 4320 GB of bandwidth each month.

With that much data, you'd better be looking into unmetered! Else it will cost you an arm and leg, hehe.

Look for a 100mbps "shared switch" server, or a "dedicated 40mbps port" server.

AntX this is a better be safe than sorry amount .. so i would have to ask ...for either ...

100mbps "shared switch" server- this is still a dedicated serv?so this means more than one person uses it .. so you need the mbps

"dedicated 40mbps port" server... totally mine so i would not need more >> correct?

is there a example to type of server to look for AntX.. i mean in a plan

A "shared switch" unmetered server is one where your uplink is 100mbps, but others use the same pipe, so you never really get up to 100mbps.

A "40mbps dedicated port" server is one where you get the full 40mbps connection, which means, in ideal conditions you COULD get up to 14TB of bandwidth each month.

As for pricing, it would be better for you to request a plan/server in the appropriate section on WHT.

Have a good day ;)

When you say 250-300 listeners, do you really expect that many 24/7? Remember that slots is different than listeners - Say you have a 300 slot server, with only 10 slots used on an average basis - Only 10x128kbps is going to be used. If you really expect to have 300 listeners, then a dedicated server would be the way to go. Otherwise, start small and work up as needed - Say start with a 50 slot SHOUTcast hosting account through a hosting company here @ WHT's offers forum (not dedicated, just a regular old SHOUTcast account), and as your website grows, get a larger account or a dedicated server depending.

Best of luck.

i mean slots .. because from day to day the interest seems to be growing .. and the thing is that i will have more dj's than just myself .. so they will have to connect from there locations . to start there shows so ,i mean it is very hard to gauge but rather be safe than sorry i guess..

If you PM me then I'll be happy to help. I've had quite a lot of experience setting up servers for large radio stations and run a sucessful station myself.

If you only stream 8 hours a day, then metered bandwidth might be the best choice because with unmetered, you will be paying for the full line 24 hourus a day unless you can get a very good unmetered deal.

See my question Here (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?p=5301411&posted=1#post5301411).

What is the best option for creating a cheap, scalable online radio station? Would love to hear your opinion.
