I've been looking for a webhost in the last few days and I came up with a few choices. I'd be really happy if some of you who had been hosted by one of these webhosts are willing to give your opinion about them :)

Let me be the first to say "Welcome to WHT Anne!".

You've got a mixed list of hosts there.

HostPacket has been having some problems with their hosting lately, but reports have been trickling in of problems being resolved (slowly but surely).

HostCulture is the only one i've worked with (way back in my customer days) - Jedito(Jorge) and Aron (is that his name??) have been very helpful, and Jorge is actually a frequent of WHT (you may also want to check out his host, downtownhost.com).

The other 3 i cannot comment on but i'm sure someone else will :)

Come join us in the lounge and have a  when you get a chance!

Thanks for the reply! :)

And yes, I noticed I do have a mixed list of hosts. I pretty much looking for a host that cost less than $10/month :uhh:

well there are literally hundreds of hosts that can do that...figure out exactly what you need (in terms of space, bandwidth and features) and then look at all the prospective hosts and see what you can come up with....

I am in the same situation and after doing a lot of research I narrowed down my list to two hosts I know to be good, because of other customers. One is http://www.invisionhost.com and the other one is http://www.dixiesys.com

dixiesys has a great reputation for support - i dont think you'll have any problems with them...

What I need is:
150mb-300mb of space
at least 5 GB/month bandwidth
CGI/Perl
FTP accounts
POP3 and/or forwards

Yeah, that's the main things. All of my 5 choices have them. I just want to know which one is better than the others or people recommed most :)

Do a search on each name and read the entire thread.

As a current customer of Hostpacket,
I have just experience 103 hours of downtime. Read all the threads on Hostpacket.

You may think that I'm aggressive and have something against Kevin when you read my posts. But I have a serious problem with nice people being taken advantage of.

I am not telling you to NOT use Hostpacket, that decision is yours. But you should be completely aware of what has been happening at Hostpacket this past week.

I would estimate that 30% or more of Hostpacket's client terminated their service with Hostpacket. People don't mass exit a Hosting service unless there are serious problems.

Consider that:
No one could contact Hostpacket,
No emails were returned,
30-day moneyback guarantee has turned into a 72 hour partial promise of refund,
No chat, which we all used to talk to Hostpacket to initiate our service.
No backup, even though a daily backup was promised,
No one knows for sure where the company is located,
This is a partial list of complaints. The main people who were hurt, were business who lost customers and sales, and people that had none of their site files backed up on server 1, they lost all their files.

Know what your getting into if you decide you want to give Hostpacket a try.

I wouldn't go with datastream. The finnaly AIMed my back at 2:30 AM and didn't even know what ECC RAM was.

why don't you go and ask them for Trial... I think this is the best way to check them....

Hi Anne,

I am in the same boat as you, except I am looking to start hosting about 10 accounts and hopefully up to 100 (@100MB each + 1/2GB transfer). I am looking for a scaleable solution, with decent bandwidth.

I have looked at:
www.onefusion.com - my concerns with them are too much data storage vs bandwidth (10GB of data vs 30GB bandwidth - so if you host 100, 100MB accounts they only get 300MB of bandwidth each) Plus their Terms of Service and Authorized Use documents are over 15 pages long and mention all kinds of $100-$500 fines for doing anything wrong (I guess that is Singapore for you). The big plus is they seem to have a good data centre and good quality BGP bandwidth.

www.aussiehosts.com - I never really looked at them before, but after watching Garry's comments and seeing their web site, I am confident he is not a one-man operation working out of his basement. Prices are not too bad, but I did not see any mention of the type of bandwidth they are using (with all the teleco's going under, have to be careful). Regardless though, they are not taking any more customers (maybe Gary can comment)

www.mchost.com - has good over-all reviews, but the are more expensive.

cheers
