Hello all,
I'm just wondering what the general thoughts are on what should be listed for package features for shared hosting.

I've seen both levels of the extreme, from some which list every little feature of the cPanel, down to ones that just list space and bandwidth.

Thoughts?

For us - we list the short version, and a link to the details listing everything. Users don't want to be bombarded with info right away. Giving them the overview, and then linking out to the details is what I recommend. Works for us for the past 15 years. :)

Agree, a short and a complre more technical list is the best option to present your packages.

Non-savvy peaople get lost about all these technical details.

I don't think I made my first post very clear. After the user has requested the information, ie wants a detailed version, what do you list there?

I find it a waste to list every feature of a control panel when a demo would accomplish that and more with less time.

Thoughts?

Well, listing the things which sound good, and make them sound good / exagerate - all the configurable options + if you have fantastico - RV Site Builder, then say that, and cPanel comes with a simple HTML editor, so say things like:

Easy to use script installer, forums, blogs, online shops available to you, for free, in just one click!

Easy to use, powerful but simple WYSIWYG HTML editor, no coding knowledge required!

Use our Website builder, and build up the pages from your website from scratch, templates, colours, effects, design, your brand new personalized website is only a few clicks away!

Just make everything sound, and seem good!

We just list basic specifications and have a link to the web hosting control panel we use with demo login credentials.

Nice and simple.

Educating the customer - will make them more likely to choose you this time or next time. You may also want to inlcude the complete list as it will provide more content for your Website that Google will like.

Heres what I think you should do to get the best of both worlds:
One your main page, list the main features of your hosting plan - your control panel, space/bandwidth, maybe some unique feature like a sitebuilder/auto installer, etc.

Then on your hosting plan page, again list your main features first, then underneath list the smaller features that the experienced clients are interested in.

I find that most people are concerned with the following info:
Your space/bandwidth
Price
Your platform
Domain name amounts
Email address amounts
Amount of SQL databases

FTP, SSH, Fowarders, dedicated IP, SSL, etc. are only concern to a small amount of experienced users.

Remember - search engines like titles. If you don't list it, they don't find it, and you never know what filters a prospect may put in the window.

Put major feature headings with smaller print detail descriptions - best of both.

What market are you targeting? That will generally dictate how much and what information you need to post.

If you are going after users who are likely to be technical and understand, post everything.

If you are going after users who are unlikely to be technically minded, then posting all the information is unlikely to be any use to them.

You need to figure out who your target market is and tailor the information to them. That is quite possibly why you have seen such variations - maybe try and see what sites are targeting a similar market to your own and see what they do?

This was to get a general idea for people here on the forums. We already have a package feature list :)
