You'd never believe it.

Google hasn't spidered our site for almost two months.

Today I took the site down for an hour to do some maintenance on the CMS backend (if I left it up there would have been MySQL errors all over the place).

About halfway through this maintenance period, the statistics shows that Google decided to pay a visit to our site which means that the "Site Down for Maintenance" page will probably be all we have until the next visit.

If it's up now, and stays up, you might be ok. Google has taken to doing more between-update crawling this cycle than ever before... so what you missed was likely a mid-cycle hit, not a major update-related deep crawl. The next real update is still a few weeks away (unless they're on the verge of really changing their procedures) so you'll probably be hit again by then. There's probably a chance that you'll just be marked as 404's based on this attempt, but I certainly wouldn't give up hope.

I don't like google site search. I really like image search though and that news group thing is handy also.

You're right. I was watching the logs this morning and Google started. Their spider "Googlebot" has been going through every single page in our site for most of the afternoon, hitting a page every minute or two.

*breaths a sigh of relief* :D

Like I said, just when everyone was starting to think they had Google's crawling and update schedule figured out, they've started acting different. Two months ago if the same thing had happened I would have been telling you, "well, there's always next month." But it's been clear for the past few weeks that their pattern has changed. I'm not sure yet what it is, but it's not what it was!
