View Full Version : Annual Price Hike
Mysteerie 08-26-2008, 09:33 PM So the Verisign price hike of 7% is coming soon correct (at least from what I'm hearing in the wind).
First, do you think it's going to happen this year again? My answer is most likely.
Second, what do you think the registrars will do this time around (I know they still get charged the extra 7%). I think most will pass it along to thier customers but maybe a few this time around will take the loss. Well see.
Aorozco 08-26-2008, 10:55 PM Is secure and was told around March 7% com 10 net and org, no idea infos yet.
They pass to us.
txtRegistrar 08-28-2008, 04:05 PM I think the registrars with big retail prices like Network Solutions, Register.com will probably absorb the price increase all else will probably pass it along in some way/shape or form.

I agree. The registrars that are low cost will be forced to pass on the price increase to their customers and resellers.
Otherwise, they will simply lose 7% of their profit, which is a lot for the low cost registrars who are already making very little on each domain.
kawanhost 08-28-2008, 11:35 PM This was announced many months ago:

NexDog 08-29-2008, 03:24 AM Enom hiked prices by 50c earlier on this year and now we have another 50c price hike. The people that lose out are the hosts that offer $8.95 reseller accounts. It's not like other hosts are going to offer $9.95 accounts so we all lose out. :(
netearth 08-29-2008, 08:32 AM Verisign has put the prices up, but not by 50 cents I might add, its lower than that some registrars will increase their pricing by whatever they see fit, we promised our resellers our increases are always actual, rather than inflated.
Shop around guys!
Chris
NexDog 08-29-2008, 08:36 AM Hard to shop around when you have 10,000 domains already with a registrar. I don't know any other places that would give me a $6.95 rate (not that I get $6.95 anymore:()

Well, $6.86 will be the new .com price directly from verisign, so it seems unlikely any decent registrar that plans to stay in business will be able to offer prices like $6.95.
There will likely be some registrars who offer 'introductory' pricing that is very low, in an effort to take market share from other registrars... but ultimately if they want to stay in business they must either raise their own pricing or use up capital from investment, or have income from other sources, etc...
We have about 20k domains with eNom and over 5k resellers under us. In all honesty, it isn't that number that keeps us with them even after this latest price hike. It's the fact that they offer the best value-for-service of all the alternate providers. (imho) I think that's worth a few extra pennies that we could "save" by going elsewhere, and then constantly wondering if/when the new supplier is going to change their prices or worse.. disappear.
I feel the same way about credit card services and our server supplier and server management, etc... in all these cases, we are paying 'more' then we could be paying if we went elsewhere. Is it worth switching so we can save a few bucks (or in some cases quite a few more bucks) and increase our profits? No. Some things are worth the "extra" cost, and a solid domain name provider is one of them, imho.
:)
Littleoak 08-29-2008, 03:04 PM MrZippy,
I agree with you to some extent, but for large volumes of domains eNom is expensive. The $8.95 reseller accounts are going to turn into $9.45 accounts. Competitors will be offering accounts at $7.50 per domain. For every hundred domains that is $195 lost per year. It adds up.

If you have a large volume of domains, then you should consider purchasing the $7.95 plan with eNom. The money is used to fund your account (purchase domains), so you don't lose anything...
I'm not sure why anyone with a large number of domains would have an $8.95 account?
dbbrock1 08-29-2008, 06:56 PM I have noticed the price increase on many other ones too like godaddy and enom. Does it have something to do with inflation? I cant imagine the expense of creating an imaginary item to be any higher than it was 10 years ago.
Maybe its because all the good .coms and .nets are running out so they are making it cost more to register them

The reason why the prices go up is because the contracts between ICANN and the registry allows the registry to increase the price by 7% per year (that's for .com, think for .net it's even a few % more).
The registry can therefore increase there price without any justification by this amount, only condition is that they give 6 months notice.
Interesting is that it's always Verisign to make the first announcement, then the other registries follow. No other registry would increase there prices if Verisign wouldn't.
On the Verisign website you find the press releases to the increases and also some explanation why they have to increase the prices. There explanation is that it's getting more and more expansive to run the registry as the volume increases.
Aorozco 08-30-2008, 07:43 AM we dont have yet the % in the infos, no ?
Afilias will increase the price for .info to $6.75 (starting 1st of November, interesting is, that eNom will start charging the higher fee a month before).
