View Full Version : Were BlueHost kind, was I lucky or something else?
Fizzadar 08-26-2008, 08:16 PM This is the content of my latest post on my personal blog, it basically describes it all:
Yea, the blog went down for a few days, then (much to my surprise) appeared back up. Why? Well, BlueHost (don’t ever know why I chose them) hosted this domain a long time ago, and this year, they basically forgot to warn me the domain was about to expire (oh, how useful).
Anyway, I logged in once I saw the site was down and discovered it had expired 3 days ago yet only just went down. I tried to renew, but they wanted a $80 fee on top of the $10 registration for “redemption”. So I contacted BlueHost’s sister company, FastDomain via livechat to work out what to do. They told me the domain was in auction. I asked where and they said they’d have their domain manager find out and email me. Surprisingly he did! He told me it wasn’t in auction, and it was going to be 90 days or the $80 fine. So I replied with an angry email about the lack of notification, as well as asking what the 90 days is actually for.
So I log on yesterday and the site is up! I go to my BlueHost account and, despite it being expired, I can renew for $10. Of course, not a chance of that, so I’ve moved pointlessramblings.com to namecheap now, whom are amazing.
Did the domain come back by error, by default or by kind act of BlueHost? Who knows…
I have no idea what happened, I'm just really pleased with the outcome!
Energizer Bunny 08-26-2008, 08:22 PM Sorry what is this about again ? I thought this section was for hosting related topic not domain related issues.
PS: linking or just putting domain name to bypass rules is not acceptable at wht if i am not mistaken.
As per moving to namecheap thats not possible if domain is about to expire cause of 60 days limit thing !!

Meh, probably the wrong section, mods can move it, I saw this as the "closest section".
I know about that rule, but I didn't want to direct link, looks like a spam link or shameless self-promotion. It wasn't to get around no linking (because I can link it if I wanted too, it was my choice not to).
As for the moving, that's exactly what I thought, but, it's moved. Not a clue why!
Swizi 08-26-2008, 10:21 PM BlueHost obviously do have ethics, if there was no notification they obviously had a wrong.
The thing to remember though is remain civil.
I had a similar issue with Telstra (phone company) and so on, and received a re-imbursement due to the troubles it had made.
Over here Telstra is seen as the "big bad guy".

OP has over 5 posts and can link as much as he/she wants to. A lot more over 5 posts, and probably has a lot more contributing posts as you.
As for what the thread is about, read the thread and you will see, rather than just posting on a whim.
Bluehost is a known web hosting company, and mainly hosts, so posting it here is a good idea.
As for where it remains, it's up to the mods not you or me, to decide.

Did the domain come back by error, by default or by kind act of BlueHost? Who knows…I agree. If the domain name is past the renewal period, and he was allowed to transfer the domain something is very unacceptable. If this is the case Bluehost and Fastdomain are not following the guidelines of ICCAN.
CrazyPenguin 08-26-2008, 11:17 PM BlueHost obviously do have ethics, if there was no notification they obviously had a wrong.
So do you have any personal hosting experience to "clarify" your claim of Bluehost being so ethical.
From my personal experience Bluehost has proven to me that they lack in ethics and honesty in what they claim to provide in web hosting.
adminranger 08-27-2008, 02:34 AM Congrat to the OP for getting your site back up and running with having to pay the overpriced fee.
Fizzadar 08-27-2008, 06:13 AM @Swizi they probably do have ethics, but on a matter like this, it's very unlikely for a host to compensate. When I spoke to BlueHost via livechat they weren't willing to budget. Only when I went to Fast Domain and hassled them for hours did I get somewhere. Thanks for the defense too :P
@CrazyPenguin this is what I think is strange, it's technically against the ICCAN guidelines unless they paid themselves as a gesture of good will. Of couse, I have no idea which one is the truth.
@adminranger thanks! Namecheap just confirmed the transfer and it's all mine again :D
