View Full Version : DNS Propagation
TnLiP 09-03-2002, 12:10 AM I am most likely being impatient. -- some re-asurance?
On 9/1/2002 at 12:00pm I obtained an account with dedicated DNS servers. I changed the exsisting DNS on my domain, 6ps.net, to these new DNS servers. In addition, I registered a new domain, C22.org, on 9/1/2002 @ 3:52 EST using the new DNS servers.
In my limited past experiences, domain moves seem to transition through its there, nothing is there, and new location is up. However, I have never thrown the loophole of a NEW dns server.
Well anyway... Could you all check these two sites and let me know what you see?
6P's Website (http://www.6ps.net)
Catch 22 Website (Nothing there yet) (http://www.c22.org)
Thanks for the help and if you have any advice on DNS proagation let me know..
Hostkookster 09-03-2002, 12:22 AM I'd say DNS propagation takes 24 - 48 hours to filter through the internet.
TheGAME1264 09-03-2002, 12:22 AM DNS propagation normally doesn't take longer than 24 hours (although I have seen extreme cases where it does take longer). I'd wait maybe another half-day and then contact your host and ask what's up.
viGeek 09-03-2002, 12:26 AM I have seen DNS propagation take up to 96 hours, most commonly is 24-48 hours however. Just be patient, im sure things will come around.
TnLiP 09-03-2002, 12:41 AM Thanks all...
Can you try the address' and tell me what you see from your end?
Hostkookster 09-03-2002, 12:47 AM Both sites have "Gateway Timeout".
Typical DNS problem, so they aren't up yet. =)
TnLiP 09-03-2002, 12:51 AM I feel like a kid at Christmas.....
I have some new toys, but I can't open them up yet :cartman:
Any of you all play online games?
C22.org is a mature (over 18 wit exceptions) Battlefield 1942 Squad.
Contact me if you are interested in playing BF1942....

NexDog 09-03-2002, 01:06 AM yes, don't worry, all will work out.
We are facing a similar problem. We have just moved moved hostnexus.com to it's own dedicated server and delegated the dns locally and globally. As of now, 95% of all clients are pinging the new server while both HN offices (Us and AU) are pinging the old server. It is 38 hours later.
The problem is with the DNS caches. You have to wait until old cached nameservers expire which can take 96 hours or even longer. Normally they get nuked 12 hours after global delegation but there is no concrete law.
eHostPros 09-03-2002, 03:41 AM Maybe this will help a little:
What is DNS propagation?
DNS propagation is the process by which the computers on the Internet update their records to reflect new Domain Names and site names. Once your Domain Name has been propagated throughout the Internet, your Domain Name can be accessed. The process can take from 24-72 hours.
The Domain Name System is a global network of servers that translate host names into IP addresses. Most DNS servers are UNIX machines running BIND (Berkely Internet Name Domain) software; other platforms and software are available. The software is composed of two elements: the name server and a resolver. The name server responds to browser requests by supplying name-to-address conversions. This information is cached (saved for a predefined period of time). When/if it doesn’t know the answer, the resolver will ask another name server for the information. It continues to look up the ‘tree’ of name servers until it finds a name server that knows the answer. Occasionally browsers can timeout waiting for this process even when the propagation has taken place.

TnLiP 09-03-2002, 04:01 AM Thanks!
Nice website, by the way....
TheGAME1264 09-04-2002, 12:34 AM Both of your sites are showing up now at this end. Mind you, 6ps.net is merely an Apache directory listing but they both have propagated.
Geek3 09-04-2002, 12:37 AM Give the DNS some more time and it'll be up and running! Some parts of the globe will see it before some other parts.. but within 72 hours things should be peachy worldwide.
ALSO, wow... congrats on obtaining a 3 character domain name! wow! That's beautiful! I wouldn't mind taking ANY 3 character domain (even a 4) and just renaming a hosting biz after whatever we get! lol. BEST OF LUCK!
Caffeined 09-04-2002, 12:43 AM I can see both of your sites too. The time for DNS progogation to take hold is similar to what we experienced when our company changed name servers last month due to a change in ISP's. The trick for us was to avoid downtime during DNS switch. Anyway, I'm digressing...
Good luck!
TnLiP 09-04-2002, 01:06 AM It was just a mad waiting game....
All is good.
DNS is definately weird acting....
OzyWebHost 09-04-2002, 03:43 AM I had a client in Oz who was the only guy in the world who couldn't see his site on the web after two weeks of commencing DNS propagation.
Because his ISP was Oz's largest - naturally they couldn't be wrong. They were! - Telstra again with cache problems on their broadband connections.
Propagation joined other unmentionable words in his dictionary:rolleyes:
