View Full Version : how to gain technical knowledge
phpost 08-20-2008, 05:55 AM Hello,
I want to become a hosting company in the future. And I want to provide my customers with a good support. But i don't have technical knowledge about hosting stuff.
How can i acquire sufficient technical knowledge?
Thanks,
Regards
VINAX 08-20-2008, 06:26 AM 1. Learn at tutorial sites.
2. Read on WHT and ask anything that you don't know.
3. Search on Google for more solutions or info.
4. Practice by getting a server to host your own or friend websites.
You may also first to work at the web hosting companies to gain experience. When you have enough knowledge and know how to operate a business, you should start your own hosting company.
Good luck! :)
sTag-Dan 08-20-2008, 10:47 AM Yup. Best way would be on hands practice for the technical part and assuming you don't have any experience in the hosting industry, working for a company as a sales rep or level 1 support would be your best option as mentioned above ^ by Tommy ;) (even if it means doing it for free)
If you do end up working for someone, first off it's probably not a good idea saying "hey, I'll be quitting when I gain enough experience and doing my own thing so don't expect too much outta me!" :P
mummy 08-20-2008, 11:08 AM I second the posts above. Participating in forums where people discuss and comment on the subject is the first thing to do.
Having some experience working for a company is the next on the list.
Before you start offering anything to people try things out with your own projects or websites.

Hi,
The answer for this question is TAE
The first thing you have to do is to get to know what that means. After you have found out what TAE means, use the same method in future.
sTag-Dan 08-20-2008, 07:13 PM If anyone knows what the term TAE means, please post because I haven't got a clue.

01globalnet 08-20-2008, 07:38 PM Spend a 15 minutes everyday at WHT and you will be an expert :)
Just make sure you understand and have experience through the whole aspects of hosting.
- Signup as a shared client and manage a website, ask various questions to the support department to get an idea
- Signup as a reseller, manage some clients site, set up a reseller business like reselling domains etc. and try to integrate it with a billing solution
- Signup as a vps client, you will have root and you will learn how to manage a server
Read tutorials, networking, dns, linux/win management, control panel documentation etc. etc.
phpost 08-22-2008, 01:48 PM Thank you all very much. I really appreciate your help. I think i will go with this idea :

brad_the_beast99 08-22-2008, 02:27 PM Number One - Like others said, get a job in a tech support department at a web hosting company
Number Two - If you don't happen to live near a Web Hosting Data Center (which most people don't) then pickup a Level 1 Reseller account for like $40. Setup a couple mock-or-real domains for yourself and get to work!!
Really, you can read till your blue-in-the-face man, your not going to retain anything unless your hands are plugged directly into the Site Manager!! Sufficient technical knowleged in Linux? Or PHP/MySQL? Or SQL Server Ecommerce Hosting? Whatever it is, just hit it!!
