If you look at the iNet status page, it seems to be updated manually (and not very often I might add)

Hello everyone,

I was notified of the problem at roughly 5am this morning by Rackspace. Last night the Virginia (IAD1) data center suffered a power failure and two of our servers lost network connections with the rest of our cluster, one of those servers was apparently the file server for WHT. When that server lost network connectivity NFS did not cleanly remount after power was restored and the web servers hosting WHT could not access our centralized web root. My primary monitoring did not catch the outage since the web servers were technically online, but apparently Rackspace employees noticed that WHT was down (I'm sure they were reading about their outage here! ;)) and notified me.

If I had some way to notify you, I would have let you know just after it happened as I'm on here nearly 24/7.

I actually did look for iNet Interactive numbers and did try calling one but all I got was voicemails. Oh well.

Well thankfully Rackspace caught the issue then. :D

And of course today after I get some free time, I'm building an NFS state check into my monitoring! ;)

Site24x7 has some nice monitoring. You can actually have it walk through pages and make sure the content is correct...great way to keep track of whether the site is up/down. Helps when a simple ping doesn't tell everything.
Ouch...I'm sure Rackspace is embarrassed about this. Didn't they have redundant UPS? And what about A/B power to each of the servers?
Dave.

Maybe I should add IP monitoring on WHT.us instead of just forwarding it... :D

And they just went IPO too...:o

I was also wondering why power was lost to the facility. At their prices I would expect at the least a UPS that runs long enough for a backup generator to kick on.

Of course if there was some other unknown malfunction (generator failed to start for example) I could understand.
