View Full Version : Please tell me how can I do this
manveen 03-18-2001, 12:48 AM I want to access my server from telnet. Whenver I add any site on the server and give that site permission. I am able to do the telnet but I am not able to do the telnet my server.
Is there any way I can do the telnet with my server.
I am taking this steps for telnet my server
"From start I click run and telnet the primary IP address of my server.
In host I write the host and pw the password. But it says login incorrect. "
Let me know where I am going wrong?
jtan15 03-18-2001, 01:01 AM What are you using for the username? Is it a valid user on the system?
Are you trying to directly login as root? Because to do that you must setup your system to accept root logins from remote systems. I don't know your platform but on freebsd the file to do this is /etc/login.access.
manveen 03-18-2001, 05:10 AM im using Unix OS and im doing administration via web based Control Panel, but im not able to get the full control over server via this web based control panel, there are so many limitations, im not able to set the path of servlets and make the DSN enteries. Im not able to reboot my system.
Chicken 03-18-2001, 05:42 AM Can you give a few more clues? Where the server is located, what control panel is on the server (yeah, this has nothing to do with it, but maybe it will help eventually somehow)...
You are entering the host name of the server (or the IP address), then for USER, the admin user name of the server, and the password?
I'd help, but I don't feel that I have enough info from you to understand what the problem is, what you've tried, etc.

Wazeh 03-18-2001, 09:14 AM manveen, it could be many things.
Let me make this suggestion as a start point which would help us narrow it down:
1) create a new account for yourself which enables you to
telnet as this new user: say we call it manveen for example.
2) telnet to your machine and enter login as manveen.
3) if you are in, type the following at the unix shell:
whoami <ENTER>
it should reply with "manveen"
if correct, type the following:
su <ENTER>
it will ask you for a password, enter the password of the administrator account! not manveen.
if it works, you will see just a prompt with no error or
success message, so type:
whoami <ENTER>
it should say "root"
If this all works fine, let us know and we'll explore some more options. If you get an error that you cann't overcome let me know at which step did you get stuck. Note that <ENTER> means push the ENTER key on your keyboard.
manveen 03-19-2001, 01:50 AM I made one new user with telnet right. But when I write whoami and enter it says " bash:whoami:command not found"
and when i write su and enter the administrator password its says incorrect password.
Nothing is working for me here. Tell me how can I get to the root of the server.
You can email me at manveenk@yahoo.com
:(
acetate 03-19-2001, 02:12 AM hmm? double check your root password? or type your password in notepad or somewhere and copy & paste your password.

kunal 03-19-2001, 03:32 AM your password is incorrect. make sure your typing the right one in. thats all you can do. or give your host a call and ask them what the problem is.
sweet 03-19-2001, 05:17 AM The Site Administrator is a user on the Ensim powered server which only have control of the virtual domain. Do you have an IP based or name based virtual domain?
There is acutally one more level of administration above the Site Administrator control panel - which is used by the actual owner of the Ensim powered server. The could be a reseller or directly from a service/server provider. The actual owner may have root password and should be the one you contact to resolve this. If he can not resolve this, then ask him to ask his service provider for help.
You should be able to ftp and telnet to the Ensim powered server with your Site Administrator user name and passowrd.
manveen 03-19-2001, 05:49 AM Yes I have the admin password of the ensim control panel also. But I am still not able to telnet and go the root of the server. I log into telnet as a user and the I wrote
"us" and the when it ask for the password I wrote the admin password which i use in ensim control panel. But i am still not able to log into the site.
sweet 03-19-2001, 11:38 AM If you have the upper level GUI control access (one up from Site Administartor) - that user name and id can not be used to telnet and ftp. Do you know if you have root access to the Ensim powered server? Do you have the password for root? If you do, then you should be able to "su -" after logging in as a site administrator user and create a new user for telnet and ftp purposes. If you don't have root access, then you may want to inquire about it with your service provider - just as to see if they provide root access to your server.
Who's your service provider?
