Depends on what specifically that company will be doing. Web hosting can involve a lot of things.

Do you have the time, expertise, money, commitments, knowledge, etc to do it?
Otherwise I will suggest you to think twice.

Since you did not even have a niche to target, I suggest you not to waste your time.

Windows hosting, linux hosting, exchange hosting, free hosting, premium hosting, budget hosting, email only hosting, SVN hosting, hosting for developers, SEO hosting, blog hosting, dedicated servers, VPS, reseller hosting and hundreds more niches :agree:

A word of advice, stick to a business of which you know the industry quite well and actually have a passion for, not the one which is easiest to enter.

It's never a bad time, it just takes dedication and time and a love for what you're doing. Knowledge is also key, or you can start very small and learn everything you possibly need to learn through experience with perhaps hosting friends or family?

Niche is also key. See what you're good at and try to incorporate that into your company.

I'd just say read read read and try to teach yourself and learn as many new things as possible. Maybe after a lot of research you'll find it's not for you, or then again you may think it's worth a try, but as everyone else will say, you won't strike it rich over night or at all for that matter. That all depends on you and your determination to succeed and love for what you do.

Sorry for the jumbled wording by the way, I've been working on getting myself started as well, coming up with the right hosting packages is a very very mind stressing thing.

ah ic..as for me...my passion is to develop small n medium enterprise into bigger corporations. for that having a web hosting account n a gd website is essential as i believe going online for SMEs is the way to go.

another group i believe is expanding is the blogger community. avid n serious bloggers.

however, its all in the works. nothing's confirmed yet. and was thinking of getting a reseller package to try it out first.

Yes, you can start any certain type of hosting company depending on your expertise, budget, and knowledge.

Or, you can firstly become a hosting reseller as a start up :)

Well as you say getting a reseller package is the best option right now and see how you can grow :). This will be the ultimate decision on whether it was a good idea or not.

It is always a good time and always a bad time. It all depends on you niche, unique selling proposition and how you execute.

I would say no, because we're in/on the brink of a recession, which is generally a bad thing for businesses ;)

People will always have the internet and need services provided on the internet. :)

Totally agree. No doubt many people who are hit hard and are fired will take the opportunity to start up their own business.. and their definitely going to be looking for web hosting.

I don't believe the recession will have much of an impact on the hosting industry - at least for now.

From existing customers. :)

The best way to start off, is to give some free or discounted hosting to a few customers, in exchange for them to write an honest review of your services after a few months.

However, to be honest, if you are going to be "just another host" with "just another review" on some web hosting review website, then you will not be succesful.

Imho, the hosting businesses that succeed in this market (unless you have a lot of startup funding and a really good plan) are ones that target a niche market, in which case having "reviews" will not really be too helpful. In niche market hosting, what you need are personal referrals, since the odds are high your niche market is very small. (Otherwise, your chosen niche is too big, and you need to narrow it down further.)

To get word-of-mouth referrals, the strategy is the same. Give away free hosting for some customers, in exchange for their promise to recommend you to at least 3 people each in the same niche within 3 months. If they don't refer you to anyone, then stop their free hosting and convert them to paying customer. (In which case, if they are happy with you they will pay, or if they are not happy then they will go elsewhere.)

Hope that helps.

Also, there is also little point getting into a market that is already flooded, the fact that we are on the brink of recession will just make it harder for anyone starting up to survive that it already is, unless they have very deep pockets are are willing to try and ride it out, but if that is the case, they should be sensible enough to wait and see what effects the recession is having on other hosting companies before jumping into it themselves.

The only problems people have this time of year is that alot of kids want to make money quick and easy by buying a reseller account and making their so called " Hosting company" for the summer holidays which i have know many to be offline once the holidays is over but a few that are still running them very well!

But at the end of the day you need to find a certain market and try to provide something "unique"

Just my opinion ;)

great answer :)

It depends on who and what your marketing ...
If your client base are design clients, then you can grab sales by offering hosting for the designs/tempaltes/images etc

if your client group are non-for-profits, you can get major exposure fom their company websites, or at least a sponsored by: area

there's different strategies you can use to maximze your potential.

Is it a bad time because of competition? If you live in the USA...look at 5 things on your desk and ponder that question again :)

its never not a good time, its the internet with thousands of websites added daily, you just need to have a plan : what to sell, how to advertise and attract customers, etc
and luck :)
