Wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened.

It's quite ovious that his last name does not begin with a "V" So, his explanation cannot be correct.

well, not all languages pronounce "W" as "Double U". there are some out there that pronounce it as a "V". i've met people from europe that pronouce words like "wait" as "vait".

originally in english U and V were pronounced the same (as "U") . it wasn't until later that "W" came into existance (hence, 2 V's next to each other were a "Double U"). hmm... well, enough history lesson for today. :)
