WOW  can you give me classes on using SSH for administration? My command line skills with *nix based platforms leave a lot to be desired. I have problems with RPM and Grep!:(

But I hear great things about Plesk would like to hear other people's opinions on Plesk.

I don't maintain the facilities, nor the scheduling to be able to "Educate" anyone in any particular language or network protocal structure right now but I am sure there are some good books, if not some general sites about managing a server via SSH

I'm new to all this webhosting stuff, and I've only used ensim and plesk. For me, I initially had problems setting up subdomains in ensim, but after the feature was activated, it was easy: just create a directory called somesubdomain.domain.com, and the subdomain would be created. Also, creating e-mails and mailing lists are pretty straightforward.

As for plesk... Don't get me started on that. Plesk is slooooooow... Or at least it is on my cable modem... Out of curiosity, does it run on java or javascripts or something? The pages all load as if plesk were loading java applets or something...

By the way, is this topic question asking for general preferences? Or asking about certain features in the control panels?

Used to use Ensim. Dumped it as I found it left a lot to be desired when it comes to keeping software up to date (mySQL etc.).
Indeed SSH is the best thing to admin a server. Client side I would also have to say CPanel. Pitty it's so expensive though, but it's worth it as updates are released frequently. I also was lucky enough to get CPanel during their July half price sale :)

Plesk 5.0 looks nice, but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

There are sites out there with SSH tutorials. I always forget the site, but one of them lists every SSH command there is and give a short, yet clear explenation with every command.

I have only used Plesk and Cpanel. I have only used Cpanel for a few weeks, but so far I like Plesk better (it may be that I am for familiar with Plesk and it's settings?).

Cpanel the best.

I have used both Plesk and CPanel. I love CPanel from a functionality point of view, while with Plesk I could acheive many things faster.

CPanel is graphical. Plesk is character based.

Looking for the books and sites right now :) Hmmm...never thought of administering a server through SSH. Thanks for the heads up!

Best liked to least liked:

1.Plesk ( we never found it slower than the other cp's)
Its quick to set up clients, our clients like it's very straight forward and stable.

2.C-panel icon based easier for the client to understand it has options that you won't find in Plesk but I find it unreliable / buggy

3.Ensim (really dont like it!) cant say anything nice about it.

We have recently started testing H-sphere setting it up seems fairly involved ( no opinionion as of yet).

If you use the blue lagoon theme in CPanel it isn't grafical. I find the standard CPanel theme quite messy, but blue lagoon is very nice. Less fuss and easy and fast to find what you need and it loads much faster as it doesn't use any images...

I agree. I just wish my host offered it.

I'm new to this forum and want to throw my pennies in. If your looking for a stable platform them I would say use Plesk. As stated by others Plesk offers no grafics. It does offer an easy to use panel for setting up resellers and managing domains.

Why don't you ask them? You can get it free at www.cpanel.net you know...

We added Blue Lagoon to all servers and it was a big hit. Folks love it. :) I like the plain text based interface with heaps of account info down the left. Best of all for us, it's free. :D:agree:

Yeah, Blue Lagoon sure beats having to wait on all those bubbly icons to load.

Ensim :disagree:

Worst cp ever to be made, the time i used it was a nightmare, stay away from anything ensim related.

Wow, I leave for half the day, and the thread gets moved to another section...

Anyway, I don't understand why ensim is getting such bad reviews. Could someone please give a detailed "bad" experience with ensim? I'd really like to know, since my host uses ensim, and so far, I haven't had any real problems.

As for my previous post about plesk being slow... It might've just been the webhost I was using, because as a lot of people have mentioned, it *was* very simple, without any fancy icons or graphics. I can see why plesk would load faster, but of course, I would assume that everything still depends on how fast/reliable your webhost is.

Correct me if I'm wrong, newbie that I am. :stickout

Plesk = Very good security. Not many features but stable.

CPANEL = Vast features but has some minor problems. Also Customizable skins.

Ensim = Cheap, features are pretty good, but upgrades are a pain.

As of now, cpanel is the best control panel. I am not saying its perfect but it is better then plesk and ensim. My opinion at least

CPanel is definaly a fan favourite. I think CPanel is brilliant and its definaly a recommendation for any webhost.

H-Sphere is also brilliant except it seems to be 'rare' in the hosting world.

I'm not a fan of Plesk or Esim.. << not my cup of tea :stickout

Well,

I don't think H-Sphere is really 'rare' it's just that it is not that known yet. But I see more and more people switching over to it. for what I've seen of it it looks rather nice going towards excelent.

Example of Ensim beeing BAD:

LS 3.1 was just released. Upgraded to it just to find out I could not update Perl past version 5.6.0 or Ensim wouldn't work anymore. That's one of the mayor problems with Ensim, upgrade some software and there's a good chance you'll break the control panel. You have to rely solely on Ensim to release updates, which seem to come once in a blue moon.

i'll go with Cpanel,, its the only best thing in webhosting......easy to manage at clients end.....

I heard Plesk 5.0 will be having themes and all sort of stuff similar to cpanel for end user control panel, is it true ?

No, well it has themes but not like cpanel and not the whistles and bells cpanel has, customers seem to find cpanel easier

I've tried CPanel, Plesk, Ensim, and H-Sphere. Among them, Plesk is my favorite because of its stability, simplicity, speed, and flexibility.
CPanel has very nice GUI but I don't like its monthly pricing and the last time I tried it, it still had some annoying bugs.

Ensim is cheap and quite good (reminds me of CobaltRaq interface), but not too stable and doesn't offer much flexibility.

H-Sphere is very promising. The latest version is skinnable like CPanel and very feature rich (for the admin, client, and reseller). However, since it's Java based, it's taking up much resources and I'm afraid to load the server with too many sites on it. I think it works best for multiple server configuration.

I have used almost all of the control panels you have talked about in this thread, but I would suggest checking out H-Sphere. I have been testing that out for new full featured panel and it seems to handle most of the stuff I want it to do without a lot of $$$. Does have some bugs, but not any more then every other CP I have tryed. Besides that, in your list I would suggest cPanel.

cpanel is very easy for the enduser to use and understand. it's graphical and makes the beginner feel more at ease. it's also easy to set up email, ftp, subdomains and the like.

plesk has a learning curve. once you've learned it...you've learned it. but the endusers will have a lot of questions about it at first. so think about that.

Plesk gets our vote. We've been able to do a lot of site set up automation with their scripts as a foundation.

Their support forums are also a great resource, and the product doesn't complain when you start recompiling PHP/Apache, MySQL, etc.
