Heh... As you can see from the number of posts, I'm fairly new to this forum (though I've lurked for a month). I've just paid for my first webhost, and submitted my first e-mail support (yesterday, on Friday).

I was wondering if support replies don't exist on weekends. I know that normal business hours in "real life" are mondays to fridays 9-ish to 5-ish, so should I not expect a reply until Monday?

Also, would you guys recommend sending a ticket, even after I e-mailed support?

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I've already e-mailed my webhost with tons of pre-sales questions, and I don't really want to bother them... ^^;;;

If would be easier to answer your question about whether or not they provide email support on the weekends if you told us your host, but in general most do from my experiences. Better staffed hosts have 24/7 support, others may have shorter weekend hours or none at all

Check their contact page. A lot of times they tell the hours of operation

Bother them! :)

It is your money. The response in which they answer your questions is probably how I would judge a hosting provider. Everything you do from now until you get your account.

Good luck in your searches and I hope they are the right host for you.

Thanks Big-Mike for the reply.

My host is dot5hosting, and Chris has been super nice answering my pre-sales (which is why I don't want to bother them anymore than I have to...). Anyway, I did check their contanct page, and there doesn't seem to be anything about hours of operation.

If it helps any, my request was to enable subdomain support. If this takes a bit of time, I guess I should wait...

To enable subdomains take 5 seconds if they are using Cpanel :)

Jedito: FIVE seconds??? That's fast... Well, my control panel seems to be ensim. That's probably not Cpanel, eh? Darn. Guess I'll have to wait until Monday or something.

ouch, no subdomain in ensim are a little more of a pain. I wonder if they'll take the time to do it as they're not suppored natively in ensim?

WII-Aaron: I hope they do take the time to enable it, because one of the reasons I signed up (though a minor reason) was because they supported unlimited subdomains. As for the code offer... I would take it up, except with the exception of HTML and a miniscule understanding of Java, I'm clueless with codes. Yes, I trasferred out of Computing Science after my first year... ^^;;;

edude: Your reaction is making me nervous... What is wrong with ensim?

Ensim does not support sub domains, at least not easily. There are two ways to do them, one: you can create another account in ensim with the name whatever.domain.com. The problem with this from an admins point of view is that it takes time and there are seperate users per subdomain and seperate bandwidth, etc etc etc.
(This, by the way is the way ensim support tells you to do it.)

The other way is by inserting some code into the apache.py file and then restarting the appliance, then creating the filders manually under the customers account, then creating a wildcard record, etc etc etc. This is also a pain and takes time but it's more of a true subdomain on the same account.

The second method is the one I use. I have a script written so it's pretty easy for me to add a subdomain now that I have all the other stuff up.

As far as the code. It's something you have to have root access to use. They would have to do it.

:eek: Er... I think I'll wait for the support guys to do something. One thing I don't understand, though, is why admin would be under the impression that each subdomain has its own user. I want subdomains only for organizational purposes (and because it's just a silly quirk of mine), not for different users. Why is there all that fuss about bandwidth allocation? :confused:

because endim sets up each subdomain as a completely seperate account.

Oh, man! All right, nevermind. I think I'll just stick with normal directories... Thanks so much for the help, WII-Aaron. I think, next time, if I ever leave dot5hosting, I'll look for a webhost that has Cpanel... Again, thank you.

Unless your host explicity states that support is only at certain times of the day on certain days.

mangguo, If support is not offered on weekends it should be stated as so. We do not offer any kind of support on Saturday evenings and say so on the main page. :smokin:

And yes Ensim is a bit more complicated about handling
subdomains, but the mechanism is already in place which allows
the subdomains to be created with ease. Unfortunately, our
response time is directly effected by the amount of support
as well as presales inquiries we receive.

If you make requests through the Helpdesk system, it will usually
be handled a bit quicker than via email. Also there is less chance
of anything falling through the "cracks" like which can happen
with emails.
(Especially when using MS Outlook and it decides to list the
wrong time or date on an email so it puts in way at the bottom of
your inbox where you don't normally look for new emails)

Hi, everyone! Thank you for all the help. As the support from dot5hosting mentioned, the subdomains are working now. :) I didn't know that sending support tickets would be better than e-mail, but now I do.

Again, I appreciate everyone putting up with these newbie questions. You guys (and this forum) are the best.

<edit>About the ensim control panel, once the subdomain feature was activated, it became really easy to create subdomains using ensim. So, I'm not as worried as I was before about the subdomain issue.</edit>

Any decent host should have support 24/7. So therefore support on weekends should come as standard.

They also have excellent support on weekends. :)
