View Full Version : .me domain
Hikari 07-29-2008, 01:42 PM Hello guys, what do you think of this new .me TLD?
I think 20 bucks is too much expensive, but it is better than .name and for names that are all registered it can be interesting.
.ws is more expensive on most registrars and also doesn't allow transfers.
Any preview for the next years?
I registered Hikari.me and I am liking it, it has a nice sound.
SoBeIt 07-29-2008, 03:11 PM I would like to see all domain name extensions offered at at least $20 per year (I'd prefer $40), it would cut down the number of wasted 'domain for sale' sites. If you're going to register a domain name, please make sure you're going to use it within a few months, otherwise leave it for someone else who can make use of it and provide an interesting website for us all to visit ;)
I hope we will be seeing some interesting .me sites, but I suspect most will become permanent placeholders.
Now I'm off to de-stress in order to stop typing such negative posts!
Lubeca 07-29-2008, 06:22 PM Agree totally with SoBeIt. I'd love to see a return to the prices of the early days - USD 100 for a GTLD domain. It would stop spammers from registering throwaway domains like jklkjdsfjlkfds.com.
As for .me - bear in mind it's a ccTLD. It doesn't stand for "me", it stands for Montenegro.
Babushka99 07-29-2008, 06:45 PM ....and was taken up like crazy by all those who relate ME to middle-east

That is never going to happen because it is all about making profits.
Hikari 07-29-2008, 10:42 PM There are domains at those prices, and ppl that pay for it, so if you like those prices just buy those domains :P
$20 is already too expensive, 40 or even 100 would be only for rich ppl and business.
Nothing done until today was able to stop spammers, but thanks to blacklists (which bring trouble to us too) it is much more harder and expensive to spam today, I don't think domains are the more important things for them.
And I prefere the freedom to let everybody, including spammers, have our own domains, than having an oligarchy controlling domains ownership like used to be with .com.br and still happens with many .br domains :)
Back to .me, I read somewhere that they had trouble on registry on the first days, but found nothing else about it.
Why some ppl don't like ccTLD to be used internationally? Is there any technical issue? I just think that ppl native to that country should have priority over the rest, but anyway... :P
I'd like to know what do you guys think about the future of .me and about it technically.
Dolbz 07-30-2008, 03:41 AM As for .me - bear in mind it's a ccTLD. It doesn't stand for "me", it stands for Montenegro.
Well it's managed by Montenegro but they have specifically chosen to market it as 'me' to the international market as they're hoping it will provide a boost to their economy and as such they don't limit registrations to Montenegrans (spelling?) but they do limit .co.me etc to residents.
I believe .me will be used in creative ways in advertising campaigns in particular as part of a phrase but won't be popular as a companies primary website. .com will always rule that area until tlds are opened up.
maflynn 07-30-2008, 07:40 AM Perhaps it me (not pun intended) but I just don't see the allure of some of the other TLDs that are floating around. I think if you can come up with a catchy domain name within the com/net/org TLDs you'll be better off some of the .biz, .me or .info TLDs.
Just my $.02
prtscr 07-30-2008, 09:35 AM where can you register a .me domain?
You can register them in many places by now.
Some more well known registrars that support it are the following:
namecheap.com
moniker.com
I got a couple .me's too..

Well said. . .
From domain.me
The ISO 3165 Maintenance Agency assigned the ME country code to Montenegro shortly after it gained its independence in June 2006. In December 2006 Montenegro submitted its application to IANA for delegation of the .ME Top Level Domain. The delegation was finally approved and took place in September 2007.
The Government of Montenegro recognized the potential worldwide appeal that .ME could have and decided it should be operated as a generic name space to gain the maximum benefit for Montenegro.
Netunt 07-30-2008, 08:37 PM I reserverd a couple but they turned out to go on the premium list. The thing is, .me will never get big. Ok, the good ones like insure.me, host.me, love.me ect will be worth something but it won't come close to .com, .net or .org. It doesn't go with anything standard.
EDIT: The one I reserved is bidding at $6000 now :(
Hikari 07-30-2008, 09:21 PM Yeah I also think even .ws is better than .me, but it uses to be more expensive and doesn't allow transfer.
Turelio 07-31-2008, 07:27 AM guys... .ME means MONTENEGRO, that is country at Balkan, and that is domain of that country, not "ME" like GoDaddy says :)... And that is reason why that is expensive.
Take look here http://www.cri.co.yu/en/medomains
Netunt 07-31-2008, 07:38 AM "Because .ME is about YOU! .ME has incredible potential for Internet users world-wide. Think about it, with a .ME domain, the Internet will, quite simply, be all about YOU. For the first time in Internet history, domain names are essentially personal.
.ME is expected to be utilized as both a personalized Web address and as a catchy business marketing tool around the world, initially in English followed by localized and standards compliant International Domain Names in, for example, Spanish, Italian, and Montenegrin.
.ME domains, with their universal appeal, are expected to be in high demand. So some “premium” names – including verb-oriented domains, such as “Contact.ME,” “Drive.ME” or “Fly.ME,” – will be held back for auction after Open Registration. We will have more information available on premium auctions in the months to come."

Looks like they'll be a whole mix of uses for the domain extension :D
Personally, I only ever register .com and .net, not interested in any other extensions.

I generally stick to this too but also include .co.uk and .org.
Skeptical 08-17-2008, 04:29 AM Yeah I also think even .ws is better than .me, but it uses to be more expensive and doesn't allow transfer.
.ws better than .me? LOL! "ws" doesn't mean anything, and never got the kind of publicity .me is getting. Look around the internet. Everyone is talking about .me.
Hikari 08-17-2008, 09:56 AM yeah Skeptical kktnxbye
yourbigsite 08-17-2008, 10:09 AM I know me is a domain name for a country, but if people feel they can make use of the extension then why not use it? The same goes for the extention .tv - many tv channels have registered them because they feel they have a use for them. - Of course .com will always be king.
Netunt 08-17-2008, 04:59 PM The thing is, I can get most .coms I want. It is annoying though when the domain you want is taken by an advert.
Netunt 08-19-2008, 04:38 PM I guess so but it wasn't advertised as so.
