Are there any hosting companies that will let me have a phone line installed and hooked up to my dedicated server?

I'm not sure what you mean..

Could you please explain a bit more?

Do you mean for a connection? They'd use a T-3 or above to do that.

If you mean a phone..well..I doubt it..lol :D

No of course not for my connection! I find a t3 even slow. I want the phone line to setup my switch that has reboot by telephone on it. That way I don't have to relie on them to reboot my server in the event of a crash.

If the company provides 24/7 support, then they should provide free reboots for you. I would think that you would want to rely on a company for that, otherwise you don't feel secure in your choice.

Perhaps you should move this to the advertising forum so that hosts can reply back to your post.

I've seen many big colocation facilities advertise that they run phone lines to each of their cages. I'm sure it is possible to get this done for individual servers, although of course you should expect to pay rediculous amounts of $$$.

I'm surprised at your reason though: If all you want is a remote rebooter, it is probably cheaper to do it over the internet. The "correct" reason to want a phone line running to a server IMHO is for serial console use.

What jkehe is trying to say is that they offer that service, ckizer.
I recall they charge $69 for it through.

I'd say the money is better spent getting something like the APC web/telnet controllable power strips. Then, as long as you have Internet connectivity, you can go in and power cycle individual ports. They've worked great for QWK.Net.

The other plus side is that you'll soon be able to use those things with QWK.Mon, so you only have to be near a telephone to reboot a server. :)

What do you mean? If no one else has the phone number, how could it be a security issue?

I can see your point, but I think that a phone line is much less of an issue than someone exploting a server to get root access.

what kind of security are you gonna have when using the phone line? its not gonna be monitored by the NOC guys, right? so whats the security?

Why not just install a script like WebMin (http://www.webmin.com)? You can reboot your whole machine with it.

And, you can also do it through the telnet prompt.

I think everybody is failing to see what I'm trying to acomplish exactly.

I want a phone line run, because I have a power surge that can be rebooted with a telephone call to the system. You have to enter a 25 digit password to even have the machine think about rebooting so I'm not worried about security. Having a software program reboot the machine defeats the purpose!!! This is if the machine freezes (And yes machines do do this from time to time) I can instantly have my software call and the server is rebooted. I'm very concerned, with being in control, because waiting on the phone for 2 minutes or sending an email to my upstream provider takes too long. Also I may have the machine use the line at certain times to send out faxes directly from the box. Unless somebody knows of a good fax/web service that lets me fax email text directly (efax doesn't).

OK, now having the machine send faxes is a genuine reason for a phone line, but not wanting to wait 2 minutes to have you server hard rebooted is crazy.

Have you thought about getting one of those hardware watchdogs?

You could also try using tpc.int's faxing services, though I suspect that it may not necessarily provide the robustness or breadth of coverage you'd need for business use.

Check out burst.net. I think they will let you.

ckizer,

you'll find a lot of hosts allow you to do this for a monthly fee (i think it'll be about 20-30$) as well as an install charge. a lot of companies (us included) don't care which telco installs the line, as long as they terminate the line at the appropriate location so that the host can run a short line from the telco termination point to your rack/cabinet.

hope this helps.

cheers,

raj.
